The Airbus A350 was built to cross oceans. It can fly seventeen hours nonstop, carry a few hundred people from Doha to Auckland, and burn through time zones like a paper napkin.

On August 12 and 13, 2026, Qatar Airways used one to fly eighty miles.

For two days the airline put a 283-seat A350-900 on the short hop between Doha and Bahrain, a sector so brief that the great-circle distance is under a hundred miles. In doing so it briefly operated the shortest bookable A350 flight anywhere on Earth.

A widebody for a puddle-jump

Eighty nautical miles is nothing. A fast car could cover the ground in the time it takes to taxi. On a sector this short, the jet barely finishes climbing before it has to think about coming down again, and the seatbelt sign is the busiest instrument on the flight deck.

Qatar Airways normally serves Doha to Bahrain three times a day, and its smallest aircraft on the run is a single-aisle A320 with about 132 seats. Swapping in a twin-aisle A350 more than doubles the capacity on a hop most airlines would fly with a regional jet.

Why fly a giant on a tiny route

There is method behind the apparent madness. Airlines constantly reposition aircraft to match crew rosters, maintenance slots and fleet availability, and slotting a widebody onto a short regional sector can be the cleanest way to get the right aircraft into the right place for its next long-haul departure.

It also quietly adds a lot of seats to a busy Gulf corridor for a day or two. Passengers, meanwhile, get a wildly over-specified aircraft, mood lighting, lie-flat business class and all, for the price of a bus ride between two Gulf capitals.

The record, with an asterisk

The Bahrain run undercuts Qatar's previous shortest A350 sector, Doha to Dammam, by more than forty nautical miles. Purists will note an even shorter A350 hop exists in the Caribbean, between Bonaire and Curacao, flown by a leased Corendon jet. But those seats are not sold on their own, so they do not count for the record.

None of it is efficient, and none of it is really the point. Sometimes the schedule simply demands that a jet built for the far side of the planet go and fly across a strait instead. And for two days, the biggest bargain in aviation was a widebody seat you could finish before your coffee cooled.
