For the first time, China has flown one of its heavyweight fighters to Africa. A formation of Shenyang J-16 strike jets touched down at an Egyptian air base early on 21 August 2026, opening the second edition of the “Eagles of Civilization” joint exercise between the Chinese and Egyptian air forces.
Getting there was the message. The J-16s covered more than 6,000 kilometres across two continents and four countries in roughly nine hours, topped up in the air by a Xian YY-20A tanker along the way.

A first for the PLA Air Force
The J-16 is a twin-seat, twin-engine strike derivative of the Flanker family — big, heavy and built for long-range punch. Sending it to Egypt, rather than a lighter jet that could be more easily ferried, is the point: it shows the People’s Liberation Army Air Force can move its front-line hardware a long way from home and put it to work quickly on arrival.
The tanker made it possible
A nine-hour intercontinental hop is impossible for a fighter without fuel in the air. That job fell to the YY-20A, the tanker version of China’s Y-20 heavy transport, which trailed the J-16s across the route and passed them fuel en route to Egypt.
A widening footprint
Egypt has been steadily deepening its defence ties with Beijing, and a second joint air exercise in as many years underlines the trend. For China, the value is as much political as tactical: a heavyweight fighter on an African runway is a visible marker of reach in a region long shaped by American and European air power.
