A cargo plane that loads itself
The clever part of the Chaparral is not that it flies itself. Plenty of drones do that. The clever part is that it handles its own freight. Elroy Air built robotic cargo pods that the aircraft picks up, secures and releases on its own, so a delivery can happen at a spot with no people and no equipment waiting.
That is what the August demonstration was really about: proving the whole loop can run unattended, from pickup to drop-off, which is the difference between a neat drone and a usable logistics system.

How the Chaparral works
The aircraft uses six lift propellers to rise straight up like a helicopter, then flies forward on a single pusher propeller like an aeroplane, carrying its cargo pod slung beneath the fuselage. A hybrid-electric powertrain gives it range that a purely battery-powered design could not match.
By design it carries a few hundred pounds a few hundred miles, and it does not care whether there is a runway, a tower or a fuel truck at the far end. It just needs a clear patch of ground.
Why the Army cares
In a real fight, the most dangerous job is often resupply: driving a truck or flying a helicopter full of ammunition into a place the enemy is trying very hard to hit. An aircraft that can shuttle supplies forward with no crew aboard takes people out of that line of fire.
It is also a reminder that the quiet revolution in aviation may not be flying taxis full of commuters, but pilotless workhorses moving boxes. The passenger versions are stuck in years of certification. The cargo robots are already flying the mission.
