It is not often that an aircraft gets fifty percent more power without getting any bigger. That is exactly what the U.S. Army is trying to bolt into thousands of its helicopters — and on 12 August 2026 the effort passed one of its hardest gates. GE Aerospace's T901-GE-900 turboshaft, the new engine at the centre of the Army's Improved Turbine Engine Program, cleared its Preliminary Flight Rating.

In plain terms: the engine is now judged safe to fly on a test aircraft. It is the step that turns a machine that has run for hundreds of hours on a test stand into one that will actually leave the ground bolted to a Black Hawk.

The number that matters is 1,000. That is how many extra shaft horsepower the T901 adds over the engine it replaces — and it does it in the same space, at almost the same weight.

A Bigger Engine in the Same Hole

The engineering trick of the T901 is restraint. The Army did not want a new engine that forced a new airframe; it wanted a drop-in replacement that fits the existing nacelle of the Apache and the Black Hawk. GE's answer is a single-spool core — simpler than the twin-spool T700 it supersedes — combined with additive-manufactured parts and ceramic-matrix-composite components that survive higher turbine temperatures. More heat, handled cleanly, means more power from the same volume of air.

The result is roughly 3,000 shaft horsepower against the T700's 2,000, plus a quarter better fuel burn, in a package the same size and weight. That margin is not a luxury. The Black Hawk and Apache have both gained weight steadily since the 1970s as radios, armour, sensors and weapons piled on. The T901 gives that heavier fleet back its climb rate, its hot-and-high performance, and its range.

What Preliminary Flight Rating Means

Preliminary Flight Rating is an airworthiness verdict, not a marketing milestone. It certifies that the engine has demonstrated enough of its performance and safety margins on the ground to be trusted in the air on a developmental aircraft. The Army announced the T901 had passed on 12 August 2026, calling it a key step on the path to full qualification.

The next stage — full airworthiness qualification testing — is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2027, running in parallel with the UH-60M's own developmental flight programme. Only after that will the engine be cleared to enter the fleet.

The Programme That Outlived Its Third Customer

ITEP was always meant to feed three aircraft: the Apache, the Black Hawk, and the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft, the new scout the Army was designing around this exact engine. FARA was cancelled in early 2024. That left the T901's entire business case resting on the two helicopters it was originally designed to re-power — but those two number in the thousands, so the case still holds.

The engine it replaces, the T700, has been the reliable heart of Army aviation since the late 1970s. Nearly half a century on, the airframes it powers have grown heavier and hungrier than anyone imagined. The T901 is the Army's bet that it can keep the Apache and Black Hawk relevant for decades more without designing either aircraft again — simply by giving each one a thousand more horses under the same cowling.

Passing Preliminary Flight Rating does not put the engine in the fleet. But it does mean the next time a T901 runs up to speed, the aircraft around it will be ready to fly.
