Riyadh Air Reaches Kuala Lumpur

Six weeks ago, Riyadh Air did not fly anywhere. On 30 July 2026, Saudi Arabia’s brand-new flag carrier opens a year-round route between Riyadh and Kuala Lumpur — its first scheduled service into Southeast Asia, and another sprint in one of the fastest airline roll-outs in recent memory.

The Malaysian capital joins a network that only began carrying passengers in June, when the airline launched its inaugural service to London. For a carrier still counting its aircraft in single digits, the pace is deliberate: Riyadh Air wants to be a global name almost before it has a fleet to match.

Informations clés

  • Itinéraire: Riyadh (RUH) – Kuala Lumpur (KUL)
  • Lancement: 30 July 2026
  • Fréquence: 3× weekly, year-round
  • Aéronef: Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner
  • Cabins: Business Elite, Business, Premium Economy, Economy
  • Flight numbers: RX0863 (RUH–KUL) / RX0864 (return)

A network built at speed

Riyadh Air is the airline arm of Saudi Arabia’s sovereign ambitions, backed by the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund and central to a plan to turn Riyadh into a global connecting hub. Kuala Lumpur arrives alongside new services to Málaga in Spain and Dhaka in Bangladesh, part of a burst of route launches as the airline’s fifth Boeing 787-9 joins the fleet.

The Riyadh–Kuala Lumpur flights operate three times a week aboard the 787-9, configured with four cabins from lie-flat Business Elite down to Economy. The eastbound service flies as RX0863, the return as RX0864.

For Malaysian travellers, the route opens a one-stop path to Europe, the Middle East and beyond through Riyadh; for Saudi passengers, it is a direct line into Southeast Asia’s busy leisure and business market.

“With the addition of Malaga and Kuala Lumpur, we continue to further strengthen our network across key markets for business, tourism, and trade, bringing us closer to our goal of connecting Riyadh to more than 100 destinations worldwide by 2030.”
Tony Douglas — PDG, Riyadh Air

That 2030 target — more than 100 destinations — is the number that frames everything Riyadh Air does. Kuala Lumpur is one more box ticked on a very long list.

The bigger race

Riyadh Air is not launching into empty skies. It is chasing established Gulf giants — Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad — that already dominate the one-stop long-haul market between Europe, Asia and beyond. Saudi Arabia’s bet is that Riyadh, sitting near the centre of that map, can carve out a slice of the connecting traffic those hubs have owned for decades.

Whether it works will take years to judge. For now, the strategy is simply visible on the departure board: another city, another 787, another line drawn out from Riyadh.
