Europe’s Biggest Apache Base Is Now in Poland

Poland has ordered 96 AH-64E Apache Guardians. When they arrive it will be the second-largest Apache fleet on earth, behind only the United States Army.

Ninety-six attack helicopters is a headline. What happened at a factory in Łódź on 11 August 2026 is the part that decides whether they actually fly.

Boeing signed two offset agreements with Polish state defence companies to build what all parties describe as the largest Apache support infrastructure in Europe — a service centre capable of maintaining at least 96 aircraft, inside Poland.

Why the Workshop Matters More Than the Order

Combat aircraft do not generate sorties. Maintenance systems generate sorties. An attack helicopter fleet in a prolonged crisis is limited not by how many airframes sit on the ramp but by how quickly inspections get done, how fast components get repaired, and whether the spares are on the right continent.

Doing that work in Poland removes a dependency on an overseas depot chain at precisely the moment such a chain would be most stressed. That is the strategic content of what is, on paper, an industrial offset agreement.

Poland Has Stopped Being Just a Customer

The Polish government was explicit that the offset, not the aircraft, was the point of the day. Prime Minister Donald Tusk framed the contract as being about Polish security, the development of the Polish defence industry, and a technological leap — in that order.

WZL-1 brings more than eight decades of aircraft maintenance and overhaul experience and employs around 400 people in Łódź with a further 250 at its Dęblin branch. WCBKT specialises in aviation ground support equipment, and under its agreement Boeing will evaluate Polish-developed GSE for use with the AH-64E — meaning Polish kit could end up supporting Apaches beyond Poland.

The Eastern Flank Gets a Centre of Gravity

Poland already hosts Multinational Corps Northeast in Szczecin and Multinational Division Northeast in Elbląg. Add 96 AH-64Es and the continent’s largest Apache support base, and NATO’s attack aviation acquires a centre of gravity several hundred kilometres from Kaliningrad.

The AH-64E itself is the current production standard: uprated T700-GE-701D engines, composite main rotor blades, Longbow fire-control radar, Link 16, an open systems architecture, and Level 4 manned-unmanned teaming, which lets a crew control both the sensor payload and the flight path of a drone. Boeing has increasingly marketed it as adaptable to counter-drone work, and in March 2026 U.S. Army AH-64Es engaged unmanned aircraft air-to-air during an exercise at Grafenwoehr in Germany.

Until the new aircraft arrive, Poland is flying eight AH-64Ds leased from the U.S. Army, delivered between June 2025 and March 2026 and based at Inowrocław, keeping crews current on a type they will operate at scale for decades.

Two cautions on the numbers. The headline order value varies between sources; the figure above is the Polish Ministry of National Defence’s own, and should not be confused with the separate $4.7 billion production contract. And while there is Polish ambition to service allied operators’ Apaches at Łódź, the August agreements cover the Polish Armed Forces’ own fleet. That wider role is an aspiration, not a commitment.
