The story behind the numbers
Born from the Fighter Mafia’s crusade for a light, agile dogfighter, the Viper became the most numerous Western fighter of its age and one of the deadliest: 73 to 81 air-to-air kills against a single confirmed loss — including the type’s first air-to-air kill of a Russian fighter, a Su-35 downed by a Ukrainian F-16 in July 2026. Israel opened the account over Lebanon in 1981–82, where F-16s claimed some 44 Syrian aircraft without loss; Pakistani F-16s added Soviet and Afghan kills along the frontier.
Its one air-to-air loss came in the 2019 India–Pakistan clash — contested, like everything in that skirmish. The F-16’s record is the 4th generation in miniature: overwhelming when flown by well-trained forces with support, and still scoring — Ukrainian and coalition Vipers have added cruise-missile and drone kills in the 2020s.
