Hikaye

Luscombe: the company and the aircraft that made its name

Metal, not fabric

Donald Luscombe had already made his name with the Monocoupe when he decided its steel-tube-and-fabric construction was too expensive and inefficient. In 1933 he founded his own company in Kansas City to build light aircraft in all-metal monocoque construction. The first, the Phantom of 1934, was elegant but tricky to land, and only 25 were sold.

A school that paid the bills

In the winter of 1934–35 the firm moved to Trenton, New Jersey, and opened the Luscombe School of Aeronautics, whose trainees worked on the factory floor; for years the school helped keep the company afloat. After the simplified Model 4 came the design that mattered: the Model 8, first flown on 17 December 1937, a side-by-side two-seater with a 50 hp Continental. It sold in its thousands before and after the war as the Silvaire, and was entered twice, unsuccessfully, in US Air Force liaison competitions.

The Silvaire’s long afterlife

Luscombe also built the four-seat Model 11 to specifications from the Flying Farmers of America in 1946, but the post-war light-aircraft slump bankrupted the firm in 1948, and Temco bought the assets in 1949. The Model 8 refused to die: Temco built about 50, Silvaire Aircraft in Colorado built 80 more until 1960, and the type certificate has changed hands repeatedly since, most recently in 2019 with plans to restart production.
