Comandante Espora Naval Air Base: what it was built for and what flies there now
Comandante Espora lies about ten kilometres east of Bahía Blanca, in the south of Buenos Aires province, near the Puerto Belgrano naval base. Wikipedia dates the naval air base to 16 June 1939 and names it after Tomás Espora, a naval officer of the war of independence. It is the main base of Argentine Naval Aviation and the home of Fuerza Aeronaval 2, the embarked aircraft and helicopters.
The airfield is shared: the Ministry of Transport lists it as a joint-use aerodrome, and Wikipedia counts 238,900 airline passengers and 3,962 aircraft movements in 2024, with Aerolíneas Argentinas and LADE flights. It has long been the shore home of embarked aircraft — the Trackers, retired here in 2025 after 63 years of the type in Argentine service, the Sea Kings, and the Super Étendards of the Second Naval Fighter and Attack Squadron, which fired the Exocets of 1982 from Río Grande.
In 2026 Espora has no flying jets and no Trackers. Its Sea Kings still fly to Antarctica every summer, and Zona Militar reports that the third ex-Norwegian P-3C Orion will be formally incorporated here.

What Comandante Espora Naval is known for
Home of the Exocet squadron
The Super Étendards that hit HMS Sheffield and the Atlantic Conveyor in 1982 belonged to the Second Naval Fighter and Attack Squadron, based at Espora. They flew the war from Río Grande.
Two Exocets on 4 May 1982; 20 of Sheffield’s crew died. The lead aircraft, 3-A-202, is preserved at Espora.
63 years of Trackers
The Navy’s carrier anti-submarine aircraft flew here until the last one was retired in a ceremony at the base.
From the arrival of six S-2As on 31 May 1962 to the retirement of 2-AS-23 on 2 December 2025.
The jets that never flew
Five Super Étendard Modernisé were bought from France and delivered in 2019, but problems with ejection-seat cartridges kept them on the ground.
12.5 million euros, five aircraft, zero test flights in Argentina by May 2025, per Zona Militar.
Helicopters for the ice
Espora’s Sea Kings sail each summer on the icebreaker Almirante Irízar to supply Argentina’s Antarctic stations.
About 200 flying hours and six Antarctic bases supplied in the 2025/26 campaign.
A navy base with an airline terminal
Bahía Blanca’s airport uses the naval runways.
238,900 passengers and 3,962 aircraft movements in 2024, per Wikipedia.

01A naval air base beside the fleetČíst
Espora sits near Bahía Blanca, in the same corner of Buenos Aires province as the Puerto Belgrano naval base. Wikipedia gives 16 June 1939 as the opening date and says the base takes its name from Tomás Espora, a naval officer who fought in the war of independence of 1810–1825.
The area was drawn into the coups of the 1950s. During the Revolución Libertadora of 16–23 September 1955, Wikipedia records fighting at the Puerto Belgrano naval base near Bahía Blanca during the rising that removed President Perón. The part Espora’s aircraft played in those days is not described in the sources read for this page.
Today the airfield is also Bahía Blanca’s airport. The Ministry of Transport lists it as a joint civil and military aerodrome, and Wikipedia’s infobox gives three asphalt runways, the longest 2,616 m.
02The carrier air group’s shore homeČíst
Wikipedia describes Fuerza Aeronaval 2 at Espora as the command for embarked aircraft. The Navy’s first S-2A Trackers came on 31 May 1962, six of them, brought by the carrier Independencia, according to Zona Militar; six S-2Es followed in 1978. In December 1978 Trackers flew in the Beagle crisis with Chile, and in 1982 they started the war aboard Veinticinco de Mayo before moving ashore to Río Grande and Río Gallegos.
From 1993 the Trackers were re-engined in Israel under a project the Navy called TATA, and 2-AS-23 was the first converted. The same aircraft made the last Tracker flight: on 2 December 2025 the Navy retired it at Espora after more than 60 years of Tracker service. Zona Militar wrote in April 2026 that the P-3C Orion is now the Navy’s only aircraft with anti-ship and anti-submarine potential.
03Super Étendard: from Exocet to hangarČíst
The Second Naval Fighter and Attack Squadron received the first five of 14 Super Étendards, with five Exocets, between August and November 1981. In 1982 four were operational and flew from Río Grande, according to Wikipedia. On 4 May Capitán de Corbeta Augusto Bedacarratz and Teniente de Fragata Armando Mayora hit HMS Sheffield; the Navy celebrates the date as its Naval Aviation Day. On 25 May two more Exocets struck the Atlantic Conveyor. On 30 May the last Exocet was fired at what Argentina says was HMS Invincible; Britain says no ship was hit.
The squadron’s later history is one of waiting. Zona Militar reported that the original aircraft had been grounded for more than a decade by 2025. Five Super Étendard Modernisé were bought from France for 12.5 million euros — the agreement was finalised in January 2018, according to Zona Militar — and arrived in 2019. Not one made a test flight in Argentina. The ejection seats’ cartridges could not be certified, and CITEDEF built a test rig to evaluate replacements.
On 28 March 2024 the Navy displayed 3-A-202, the Sheffield aircraft, beside SEM 44 at Espora. In May 2025 Zona Militar reported that the Navy was considering retirement, and in August 2026 Plan Dédalo confirmed it.
04Sea Kings, Antarctica and a nuclear carrierČíst
Espora’s busiest aircraft are helicopters. On 11 October 2022 two SH-3H Sea Kings, 2-H-244 and 2-H-245, arrived by sea at Bahía Blanca and were taken to the base after remanufacture by Carson Helicopters in the United States; Zona Militar puts the cost at 12,835,000 dollars from the national defence fund FONDEF. They joined the Second Naval Helicopter Squadron.
Every Antarctic summer a detachment sails on the icebreaker Almirante Irízar. In the 2025/26 campaign it flew about 200 hours over four months, supplying San Martín, Marambio, Orcadas, Belgrano II, Petrel and Esperanza with a group of 40 people. In April 2026 Argentine Sea Kings flew from the US carrier Nimitz during the Southern Seas exercise.
The fleet’s end is in sight but undated: Zona Militar reported on 20 August 2026 that Plan Dédalo would begin the Sea King retirement in 2027, and on 21 August that the Navy’s target was 2031, with no replacement chosen.

Co se tady stalo
The Exocet that made the squadron’s name
Two of the squadron’s Super Étendards, 3-A-202 flown by Capitán de Corbeta Augusto Bedacarratz and 3-A-203 by Teniente de Fragata Armando Mayora, took off from Río Grande, refuelled from a KC-130 and fired two Exocets at HMS Sheffield at 11:04. The Navy calls it a coordinated action with an SP-2H Neptune. British accounts say one missile hit and one missed; 20 crew died and the destroyer sank under tow on 10 May. A 1982 British inquiry said the warhead did not explode; a 2015 Ministry of Defence reassessment concluded that it did.
Sea Kings by sea
Two remanufactured SH-3H Sea Kings, 2-H-244 and 2-H-245, arrived not by air but by ship, and were moved from the port of Bahía Blanca to Espora. Carson Helicopters had rebuilt them with components of its S-61T Triton standard, and Zona Militar put the total at 12,835,000 dollars from the defence fund FONDEF. They went to the Second Naval Helicopter Squadron for Antarctic supply, transport and search and rescue.
Two Super Étendards on show
Espora put Super Étendard 3-A-202, the aircraft that led the Sheffield attack, on display beside the modernised SEM 44. Zona Militar reported that SEM 44 and SEM 31 were the two meant to return to flight, and the older 3-A-209 too, all waiting for a solution to their ejection seats; the Argentine research agency CITEDEF had built a rig to test replacement cartridges. None flew again: Plan Dédalo confirmed the type’s retirement in August 2026.
The last Tracker
In a ceremony at Espora the Navy retired S-2T 2-AS-23, its last Turbo Tracker. The type had served since six S-2As arrived on 31 May 1962; this airframe had also been the first sent to Israel for the turboprop conversion in 1993.
