Rimba Air Force Base: what it was built for and what flies there now

Rimba Air Force Base is the whole of the Royal Brunei Air Force in one place: its headquarters, every flying squadron, the drone squadron and the maintenance wings sit on the far side of the runway from the terminal of Brunei International Airport, in Brunei-Muara district north of Bandar Seri Begawan. The base has no runway of its own. It shares the airport’s single 3,658-metre runway, 03/21, and the Brunei AIP chart marks the air force’s hangars beside it. The coordinates and elevation given here are the airport’s reference point from the AIP, not a point on the base.

The air wing did not start here. According to Wikipedia, its first Bell 205s flew from Berakas Garrison in 1970, before the base existed; the present airport opened in 1974, replacing the old airfield at Berakas, a runway the Japanese had built in the Second World War. When the base itself opened is not stated on the official pages checked; the air force’s own history page is published as an image. What is documented is what came through it: S-70A Black Hawks and the CN-235 in 1997, PC-7s in 1998, S-70i Black Hawks from 2013, and four Airbus C295MWs between January 2024 and April 2026.

Rimba has also become the place where Brunei, which has never owned a combat jet, meets other people’s fighters. Its Air Movement Centre, handed over in 2013 according to Wikipedia, received two US Air Force F-35s on 1 March 2024 — the air force said this was the first time American fifth-generation fighters had landed in Brunei — four F-22 Raptors in August 2024 and two Royal Australian Air Force F-35As in August 2025. In 2025 the air force began building a new home for its air defence wing, including a hangar for a medium-range air defence system it has not named.

What Rimba Air Force Base is known for

01

An air force on one airfield

Every Royal Brunei Air Force flying unit is based here, beside the country’s only international airport.

One shared runway, 03/21, 3,658 m long and 45 m wide, per the Brunei AIP.

02

Fighters that are not Brunei’s

Brunei has no combat jets, so the fighters seen at Rimba are visitors from allied air forces.

Two USAF F-35s on 1 March 2024 were, the air force said, the first American fifth-generation fighters to land in Brunei; four F-22s followed on 6 August 2024.

03

Home of the Black Hawks

The S-70i fleet that replaced the Bell 212 after the 2012 crash is flown and maintained here.

12 S-70is, over 13,000 flight hours in almost ten years without a major accident by September 2023.

04

The C295 fleet

Brunei’s first new tactical transports since the 1990s arrived at Rimba between 2024 and 2026.

Four aircraft; by April 2026 they had flown 518 flights across eight Southeast Asian countries.

05

A Singaporean neighbour

Singapore’s Brunei Helicopter Detachment flies in Brunei, and in 2025 it flew in formation with the Brunei air force for the first time.

Two S-70is and two RSAF H225Ms, 10 September 2025.

01From Berakas to Rimbaלִקְרוֹא

Brunei’s military flying began with medical work in the interior in the mid-1960s, with helicopters and pilots that were hired or lent by Britain. According to Wikipedia’s article on the base, the Air Wing’s pair of Bell 205s operated in 1970 from Berakas Garrison, before Rimba existed. The civil airport of the time was also at Berakas, on a runway the Japanese had laid during the Second World War; it was there that three RAF Beverleys landed Gurkhas at the outbreak of the 1962 revolt.

The present airport became operational in 1974, with what Wikipedia calls one of the longest runways in the Far East; the Brunei AIP gives 3,658 metres. The air base grew up on the other side of that runway. Its opening date is not given on the official pages checked, and is left blank here. Wikipedia’s chronology runs through the base: Bell 212s from 1974, Bo 105s from 1981, S-70A Black Hawks and the IPTN-built CN-235 in 1997, four PC-7 Mk IIs in 1998 and Mistral missiles from January 1999.

02Black Hawks, Bolkows and a new transport fleetלִקְרוֹא

The base’s flying since 2013 has been a story of replacement. The first four of 12 Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawks arrived on 27 November 2013, as the Bell 212 fleet was run down after the 2012 crash. By September 2023 the maintenance squadron, No. 51, reported almost ten years and over 13,000 hours on the type without a major accident, and Brunei hosted the International Black Hawk Operators Conference that year.

The Bo 105s, nicknamed Stinger, were retired in a ceremony at the Air Movement Centre in February 2022, after 41 years, 36 pilots and 32,000 flying hours. Their successor, the Airbus H145M, was ordered in May 2024; no delivery had been reported by the air force by the end of September 2026.

Fixed-wing transport moved faster. The C295MW entered service on 14 February 2024, when, according to the air force, the Sultan himself flew one of the aircraft at its introduction. The last two, TUDB 504 and 505, landed at Rimba on 20 April 2026 after a seven-day ferry from Seville, and by then the fleet had flown 518 flights, including relief to the Philippines and Myanmar.

03Visiting fighters at the Air Movement Centreלִקְרוֹא

Rimba’s Air Movement Centre, completed in 2013 at a cost of about B$3.9 million according to Wikipedia, is where foreign military aircraft are received. On 1 March 2024 two US Air Force F-35s landed there for a single night; the air force described it as the first time American fifth-generation fighters had landed in Brunei. On 6 August 2024 four F-22 Raptors and three C-130Js arrived during Iron Blade, a Pacific Air Forces redeployment from Exercise Pitch Black in Australia, and stayed three days.

On 30 August 2025 two Royal Australian Air Force F-35As and a KC-30A tanker made the Australian type’s first visit to Brunei. None of these aircraft are Brunei’s: the only aircraft based at Rimba are the air force’s own helicopters, transports, trainers and drones.

Closer neighbours train here too. On 10 September 2025 two S-70is of 11 Squadron and two H225M helicopters of the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s Brunei Helicopter Detachment flew arrowhead and diamond four-ship formations at Rimba, the first mixed formation of the two air forces, with 34 Singaporean personnel taking part. The air force said the aim was aircrew coordination and interoperability for disaster relief.

04Building for air defence and dronesלִקְרוֹא

Since 2024 the base has been growing. A building for the unmanned aircraft squadron was begun on 20 August 2024, and the first drone operator wings were presented the following month. On 30 September 2025 the commander laid the foundation of a new air defence complex: a No. 2 Wing headquarters of 1,990 square metres, Hangar 238 for the Mistral squadron and a 1,500-square-metre hangar for a medium-range air defence system. Groundwork had started on 7 May 2025 and completion was due in November 2026. The air force has not named the medium-range system, and none is listed here.

December 1962

Beverleys into Brunei

When the TNKU revolt broke out, three RAF Beverleys of No. 32 Squadron carrying Gurkhas from Singapore were diverted in flight to Brunei’s airfield, then at Berakas, once it was confirmed that the rebels did not hold it, rather than landing at Labuan. Wikipedia, citing the historian Tom Pocock, says they landed at about 10 pm and the Gurkhas advanced into Brunei. The field was the predecessor of today’s airport, beside which Rimba now stands.

20 July 2012

The worst day

A Royal Brunei Air Force Bell 212, returning from jungle training, crashed at Ulu Rampayoh in Mukim Labi, Belait district. Of the 14 on board, 12 were killed, six of them cadets; two cadets survived with serious injuries. Local media called it the worst tragedy in the history of Brunei’s defence. Wikipedia says the investigation found unauthorised low-level flying leading to controlled flight into terrain; that finding was not confirmed from an official source. The Bell 212 fleet was retired within two years.
