Wings of Taurida: how the team came to be and what it flies today

A team named for Crimea

The Wings of Taurida were formed from instructors at the Borisoglebsk training airfield in Voronezh Oblast, which operates the Yakovlev Yak-130 advanced trainer. Training began in October 2013, according to The Aviationist, and on 21 May 2014 the air force commander, Colonel General Viktor Bondarev, announced the name, which refers to Taurida, the historical name for Crimea, annexed by Russia that spring. Bondarev promised a livery “no worse than the Knights and the Swifts”. The group started with four aircraft and grew to six.

Victory Day and MAKS

Instructors from the Swifts helped train the Borisoglebsk pilots, led by the base’s deputy commander Denis Kokhanovsky. The six Yak-130s flew over Red Square in the Victory Day parade of 9 May 2015 in standard air force colours and without announcement, then made their first public display at the close of Aviadarts in June 2015 and their MAKS debut in August 2015. Little has been published about the group since 2015.
