Escuadrilla Acrobática Bicolor: how the team came to be and what it flies today

Reviving a Peruvian tradition

The Peruvian Air Force activated the Escuadrilla Acrobática Bicolor on 27 October 2020 as Air Squadron 611 of Air Group No. 6 at Chiclayo, reassigning four Zlin Z-242L primary trainers to it. Its name refers to Peru’s red and white national colours. Infodefensa recorded two earlier FAP teams: the 4 Ases on Hawker Hunters and the Diablos Rojos on Aermacchi MB-339As in the 1980s. The first commander was Major Carlos Angulo Amico.

Zlins and Game Birds at Chiclayo

The team displays mainly over the northern coast near Chiclayo, including Pimentel. In March 2025 the FAP presented two Game Composites GB1 Game Bird aerobatic aircraft for the squadron, bought for about US$1.9 million with four more planned over two years. On 5 May 2026 one of the team’s aircraft made an emergency landing in rice fields near Chiclayo after a mechanical fault during practice; the pilot was unhurt and the FAP opened an investigation.
