Ecuadorian Air Force combat record

Every war and armed action of the Ecuadorian Air Force

Ecuador fought Peru three times over a border settled only in 1998, and each side tells those wars differently: each blames the other for the war of 1941; Peru calls the 1981 clash “Falso Paquisha”; and in the Cenepa war of 1995 Ecuador claims two Su-22s shot down by its Mirage F1s and an A-37B by a Kfir on 10 February, while Peru accepts the loss of the A-37B but attributes one Su-22 to anti-aircraft fire and the other to an engine fire. The Colombian raid of 2008 at Angostura, about 1.8 km inside Ecuador, is included although the FAE did not fly against it: Colombia called it a step against terrorism, Ecuador a violation of its sovereignty. In the internal armed conflict declared on 9 January 2024, Reuters reported a joint US–Ecuadorian bombing near the Colombian border on 6 March 2026; Colombia said the strike hit its territory, which Ecuador denied. Where a consolidated sortie or loss figure exists in the official record it is given here; where accounts disagree, the range is shown and the disagreement named. Blank cells are blank because no figure could be verified, not because the fighting was small.

The Ecuadorian–Peruvian Warthe 1941 warEcuadorian military aviation (FAE) 1941 ペルー Curtiss-Wright CW-19R, IMAM Ro.37

Reconnaissance and liaison with a handful of light aircraft; no effective opposition to Peru’s air arm.

When fighting broke out in July 1941, Spanish Wikipedia counts the Ecuadorian air arm at three Curtiss-Wright CW-19R two-seat trainers and three IMAM Ro.37 reconnaissance biplanes, against 43 Peruvian aircraft. Major Leonidas Hidalgo and Lieutenant Bolívar Pico are named as having challenged the enemy air force in aircraft that cruised at 200 km/h, flying 53 hours that month. Peru’s air arm bombed Ecuadorian border towns and dropped paratroops at Puerto Bolívar; the Peruvian account of Lieutenant José Quiñones, who Peru says flew his damaged fighter into an Ecuadorian gun position on 23 July, is disputed by Ecuadorian military authorities, who have said there were no anti-aircraft guns there. Each side blames the other for starting the war. The defeat drove the build-up of the FAE with US aid from 1942.

結果 Peru occupied El Oro; the Rio Protocol of January 1942 fixed a border that Ecuador later contested.

Ecuadorian air operations in 1941 are thinly documented; the figures are from Spanish Wikipedia. The Quiñones episode is given as each side states it, as in the Peruvian Air Force page.

The Paquisha WarPeru’s “Falso Paquisha”Ecuadorian Air Force 1981 ペルー A-37B, Mirage F1JA 179

Ground attack and combat air patrol in support of three border outposts.

In January 1981 Peru found three Ecuadorian military posts on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera del Cóndor. Ecuador’s position was that the Rio Protocol could not be applied along an undefined 78 km stretch and that the posts, which it called Paquisha, Mayaicu and Machinaza, were on its own soil; Peru’s position was that they were on Peruvian territory and broke the status quo, and it calls the episode “Falso Paquisha”. The FAE flew A-37Bs and Mirage F1s. On 28 January 1981 A-37Bs of the two air forces met in what Spanish Wikipedia calls the FAE’s first air combat, with Captain Rommel Romo leading and Lieutenant Jorge Gabela as wingman; it was inconclusive. English Wikipedia says the Mirage F1s were held back on combat air patrol at the edge of the fighting and that one Matra R.550 Magic fired at a Peruvian Su-22 missed.

結果 Peru recovered the posts by 21 February 1981; an OAS-brokered ceasefire and the Sorrosa–Du Bois Act separated the forces.

Casualty figures are from Wikipedia; neither government’s official count was checked.

The Cenepa Warthe Alto Cenepa conflictEcuadorian Air Force 1995 ペルー Mirage F1JA, Kfir C.2, ジャガーさらに3人

Interception, escort, ground attack and helicopter support; the army’s MANPADS teams fought the air battle on the ground.

Fighting began on 26 January 1995 around Ecuadorian posts in the upper Cenepa, including Tiwinza. The FAE’s Strikemasters and A-37Bs first attacked Peruvian positions on 3 February under fighter escort, and on 7 February an A-37B hit by anti-aircraft fire landed safely at Macas. The decisive day for the FAE’s own story was 10 February. Ecuador says Major Raúl Banderas and Captain Carlos Uzcátegui, flying Mirage F1JAs, shot down two Su-22s with Magic missiles, and that Captain Mauricio Mata in a Kfir C.2 downed an A-37B with a Shafrir missile; the FAE’s history calls the day “la gesta heroica y victoria del primer combate aéreo en Latinoamérica” (the heroic feat and victory of the first air combat in Latin America). Peru’s position is that one Su-22 was hit by Ecuadorian anti-aircraft fire during a low-level attack and the other was lost to an engine fire; it accepts the loss of an A-37B. English Wikipedia notes the FAE never released head-up display video of the Su-22 kills. Ecuadorian army MANPADS teams claimed a Peruvian Army Mi-8TV on 29 January and a Mi-25 on 7 February.

結果 Itamaraty Declaration 17 February and Montevideo Declaration 28 February 1995; the Brasilia Presidential Act of 26 October 1998 settled the border. Ecuador received one square kilometre at Tiwinza as private property, without sovereignty.

Every kill claim here is Ecuador’s unless stated; Peru disputes the Su-22 claims. Casualty and loss figures differ between official sources, the English and Spanish Wikipedia articles and the Peruvian Air Force page.

Ecuador’s losses are disputed. English Wikipedia’s infobox gives two aircraft destroyed (an A-37B and an AT-33A) and says Peru claimed an A-37B and a Kfir, both denied by Ecuador; Spanish Wikipedia gives an AT-33 lost in an accident at Manta, an A-37B and possibly a Kfir damaged and repaired, and a Gazelle helicopter. For Peru, Ecuador claims two Su-22s and an A-37B (10 February) and Mi-8 and Mi-25 helicopters to MANPADS; a Canberra was lost on 6 February, apparently to weather. Official deaths: 33 Ecuadorian and 60 Peruvian according to Spanish Wikipedia; English Wikipedia’s figures differ.

The Angostura raid and the Andean crisisColombia’s Operation PhoenixEcuadorian Air Force 2008 0

None in the air: the raid was carried out by Colombian forces and the FAE did not engage.

At 00:25 on 1 March 2008 Colombian forces struck a FARC camp at Angostura, about 1.8 km inside Ecuador, killing the FARC’s second-in-command Raúl Reyes. Colombia’s government said it had taken “another step against terrorism, which does not respect borders”, argued that Reyes directed operations from Ecuadorian territory, and offered compensation. Ecuador’s government called the raid a massacre and a violation of its sovereignty, recalled its ambassador and expelled Colombia’s. Colombia used a Super Tucano in the raid; the FAE had no aircraft in a position to see or answer it. In the years that followed Ecuador ordered Super Tucanos, Chinese radars and Cheetah fighters, although the sources checked do not link those purchases directly to Angostura.

結果 Ecuador broke off relations with Colombia; an OAS resolution of 6 March 2008 found Ecuador’s sovereignty violated without condemning Colombia, and the presidents shook hands at the Rio Group summit on 7 March.

Included because the raid shaped the FAE’s later spending and border role, not because the FAE fought. The positions are those reported by English Wikipedia.

The internal armed conflictEcuador’s war on organised crimeEcuadorian Air Force 2024– Criminal groups designated terrorist by Ecuador A-29 Super Tucano, Boeing 737, C-130そしてもう1つ

Airlift, surveillance, drones, interdiction of airstrips, troops in prisons and cities, and, by Reuters’ account, air strikes alongside US forces.

On 9 January 2024 President Daniel Noboa’s Executive Decree 111 declared an internal armed conflict and named criminal groups such as Los Choneros and Los Lobos as terrorist organisations and non-state belligerents; Spanish Wikipedia records a military bombing of a gang refuge the next day. The air force’s share is mostly unglamorous: its commander general visited air force troops guarding the La Roca prison in August 2025, it disabled a clandestine airstrip in Guayas in May 2026, and its air operations commander directed drones and air surveillance over Durán in June 2026. On 6 March 2026 Reuters reported that US and Ecuadorian forces had bombed a camp of the Comandos de la Frontera near the Colombian border. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro said Ecuador had bombed a site inside Colombia where 27 burned bodies were found; President Noboa said the operations stayed within Ecuador.

結果 Ongoing in October 2026.

Which aircraft flew the March 2026 strikes was not stated in the sources checked. Each government’s position is given as reported.
