For thirty years, a JDAM was a dumb bomb with a brain bolted on: cheap, accurate, and useful only if you flew almost directly over the target. The Air Force just bought a version that can hit something more than 300 miles away.
On August 5, 2026, the U.S. Air Force awarded Boeing a $75 million first production contract for the GBU-75 JDAM Long Range, or JDAM-LR — a strap-on kit that turns the venerable Joint Direct Attack Munition into what is, in effect, a low-cost cruise missile.

A bomb that grew wings and an engine
The JDAM-LR keeps the proven JDAM guidance tail kit and the same aircraft interfaces crews already know, then adds a wing kit and a small turbojet — a Kratos TDI-J85 producing about 200 pounds of thrust. That is enough to carry a 500-pound-class warhead more than 300 nautical miles. A standard GBU-38 JDAM reaches about 15 nautical miles; even the extended-range JDAM-ER tops out near 45. The jump is enormous.

The point is standoff. As enemy air defenses have improved, sending a non-stealthy jet directly over a target to drop a short-range bomb has become dangerous. A weapon that lets a fourth-generation fighter or a bomber strike from medium-range standoff distance keeps the aircraft — and its crew — much further from the threat.
Cheap mass, fast
The JDAM-LR was developed through the Navy and moved quickly by weapons-program standards, completing flight testing in April. In tests from an F/A-18F Super Hornet off California, it flew roughly 200 nautical miles and struck within meters of its target. It is a joint Air Force and Navy program, and the Navy is also working on shipboard integration.
Behind the enthusiasm is a stockpile problem. Recent operations burned through munitions faster than expected — one campaign alone is estimated to have expended around 10,000 JDAMs, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. A long-range weapon built on an existing, mass-produced kit is exactly the kind of affordable firepower the Air Force wants to buy in bulk. Expect the JDAM-LR to end up under the wings of fighters and bombers alike.
