On the morning of August 14, 2026, NATO fighter jets on Baltic Air Policing duty scrambled over eastern Latvia and shot down a drone that had crossed into the alliance's airspace.

The Latvian military said the aircraft had strayed into the country as a result of Russian electronic warfare, jamming that appears to have pushed the drone off its intended course and across a NATO border. It is the second time in months that allied fighters have had to destroy a drone over Latvia.

A drone over Latvia, and a scramble

Baltic Air Policing keeps armed NATO fighters on quick-reaction alert around the clock, ready to launch within minutes against any aircraft that enters allied airspace without a flight plan or a working transponder. On the morning of August 14, that alert turned into a live intercept.

The fighters found the drone, identified it as a threat, and destroyed it over eastern Latvia. No damage on the ground was reported, but the fact of an armed shootdown inside NATO territory is significant in itself.

Blame the jamming

According to the Latvian military, the drone did not set out to attack Latvia. It was pushed there by Russian electronic warfare, the intense jamming that both sides use around the war in Ukraine and that can send drones tumbling far off their programmed routes.

That is the uncomfortable pattern of this war: weapons meant for a battlefield hundreds of kilometres away keep wandering across the borders of countries that are not fighting in it. In June, a NATO jet shot down another drone over Latvia under almost identical circumstances.

NATO's nervous eastern edge

For the Baltic states, sitting on NATO's eastern frontier beside Russia, each of these incidents is a test of nerve and of the alliance's air defences. The jets are there precisely so that a stray drone is met by a fighter and not by a city.

The danger is escalation by accident. Every intrusion, deliberate or not, forces armed aircraft into the air over a tense border, and the more often it happens, the greater the chance that one of these encounters goes badly wrong.
