Australia built the Ghost Bat. Europe, it turns out, has been quietly helping all along — and at Farnborough, Boeing finally said so out loud.

On 21 July, MQ-28 Program Global Director Glen Ferguson confirmed that Italy’s Leonardo has become an official partner on the MQ-28 Ghost Bat, the uncrewed “loyal wingman” designed to fly alongside crewed fighters. Leonardo is not a newcomer: it has worked with the programme for eight years, contributing electronic systems. What changed at Farnborough is the formality — and the signal it sends to a European market suddenly hungry for combat drones.

A European bench, not just a European supplier

Leonardo was not the only name on the slide. Eton, which builds the aircraft’s payload launch system in both ITAR and non-ITAR variants, joined too, as did Germany’s Hensoldt, brought in specifically for the German market. Ferguson framed the logic with a strategist’s clarity: the aim is to build a library of capability inside partner companies, so that whatever a future customer asks for, the expertise is already on the bench rather than years away.

For a continent that has spent the past two years discovering how quickly its magazines empty, that promise of ready, sovereign capability is the entire sales pitch.

The airframe on the stand is already yesterday

The Ghost Bat parked at Farnborough first flew five years ago — the second airframe ever built, now retired from flying as the programme moves on. Compared with the latest design it carries a wing a quarter smaller; newer jets gain roughly 3.3 metres of span for more fuel and range. Coming improvements include internal weapon bays (two AMRAAMs or four small-diameter bombs), a modular nose swapped with a handful of bolts, and beyond-line-of-sight communications.

Maturity, not spectacle, is the theme. Ghost Bat passed 200 flight hours last month and flew nine sorties in the U.S.-led Valiant Shield exercise, needing no fixed infrastructure and turning around between sorties in as little as 19 minutes. Boeing says the fleet could have flown well over 1,000 real hours by now, but the simulation is good enough that they “fly to validate” rather than to prove.

Why the loyal wingman went shopping in Europe

The display aircraft sat beside an MBDA Meteor, the European air-to-air missile, and Boeing says weapons integration work with MBDA is underway — possibly validated entirely in simulation. Add Leonardo, Hensoldt and a German sales focus, and the shape of the strategy is obvious: the Ghost Bat is being re-tailored for European buyers who want a drone they can help build and control themselves.
