ICON Aircraft: the company and the aircraft that made its name

A sport plane designed like a gadget

ICON was born of a rule change. In 2004 the FAA created the light-sport aircraft category and the Sport Pilot certificate, and in 2006 two friends from a 1993 Stanford product-design class, former F-16 pilot Kirk Hawkins and skateboard entrepreneur Steen Strand, founded a company to exploit it. Their A5 was a two-seat amphibian with folding wings, styled like a consumer product, which could be towed home on a trailer. The proof-of-concept aircraft first flew on 9 July 2008 and launched at a glossy Los Angeles event that June.

From 1,400 orders to 20 aircraft

Excitement outran manufacturing. By August 2014 ICON had nearly 1,400 orders and promised first deliveries in May 2015. In May 2016 it admitted that only 20 aircraft would be built that year instead of 175, all for training centres, and laid off staff. Its purchase agreement drew criticism for clauses including a manufacturer-owned flight recorder and a promise not to sue. In May 2017 a factory A5 crashed at Lake Berryessa, killing chief test pilot Jon Karkow and engineering director Cagri Sever; months later the retired baseball star Roy Halladay died in his own A5.

Shareholders, the FBI and Chapter 11

Production reached 100 aircraft by July 2019, but Chinese investment was cut amid the trade war and the workforce shrank by 40 percent. In 2021 minority shareholders, including former Boeing chief executive Phil Condit and Hawkins, sued to stop the state-owned majority shareholder PDSTI from moving technology to China, and the FBI and CFIUS reportedly investigated. ICON filed for Chapter 11 on 4 April 2024 and its assets were sold to SG Investment America that August. GAMA counted 221 A5s shipped by December 2025.
