HMAS Albatross (Naval Air Station Nowra): what it was built for and what flies there now
HMAS Albatross, a few kilometres south-west of Nowra on the New South Wales south coast, is the Royal Australian Navy’s only air station and the home of every Fleet Air Arm squadron. The site was chosen for a military airfield soon after war broke out in 1939; the Royal Australian Air Force began operating from it on 7 May 1942 with Beaufort torpedo bombers, and US Army Air Forces Marauders trained there as torpedo bombers in 1942–43. From late October 1944 the Royal Navy used it to support the British Pacific Fleet as HMS Nabbington, the first of its Mobile Naval Air Bases, before the field reverted to the RAAF in March 1946.
The Commonwealth Defence Council approved an Australian Fleet Air Arm on 3 July 1947, and the station was commissioned as HMAS Albatross on 31 August 1948, taking the name of the navy’s old seaplane carrier. 805 and 816 Squadrons arrived from England aboard HMAS Sydney in May 1949 with Sea Furies and Fireflies, and 808 and 817 followed in November 1950. For the next three decades Nowra was the shore end of carrier aviation: Sea Venoms and Gannets, then A-4G Skyhawks and S-2 Trackers, flew from here when HMAS Melbourne was in port. On 5 December 1976 a deliberately lit fire left the Tracker squadrons with a single serviceable aircraft.
Fixed-wing flying ended after Melbourne paid off on 30 June 1982, and Albatross became a helicopter base. Today the navy names it as the operating base of the MH-60R Seahawk, flown by 808 and 816 Squadrons with 725 Squadron as the training unit; 723 Squadron trains Navy and Army helicopter crews on the EC135, and 822X Squadron flies uncrewed aircraft. Between 1991 and 2001 New Zealand Skyhawks lived here too, and contractor Learjets still tow targets for the fleet. The Fleet Air Arm Museum sits on the base.
Coordinates, elevation and runway data are taken from the English Wikipedia infobox, which cites the Airservices Australia AIP (ERSA YSNW, effective 9 July 2026); the ERSA page itself could not be retrieved for this dataset.

What HMAS Albatross (Naval Air Station Nowra) is known for
The navy’s only air station
Every Fleet Air Arm squadron is based here, from the frontline MH-60R units to helicopter training and drones.
Five navy squadrons today: 723, 725, 808, 816 and 822X.
Home of the carrier air groups
From 1949 to 1982 the squadrons of HMAS Sydney and HMAS Melbourne lived ashore at Nowra between cruises.
Commissioned on 31 August 1948; the first two squadrons, 805 and 816, arrived in May 1949.
The night the Trackers burned
A fire lit deliberately near the hangars wrecked almost the whole anti-submarine fleet.
5 December 1976: twelve of the thirteen Trackers destroyed or badly damaged, leaving one serviceable.
New Zealand Skyhawks
For a decade an RNZAF fighter squadron was based in Australia to play the threat against RAN warships.
No. 2 Squadron RNZAF, February 1991 to late 2001, with 50–60 personnel.
A Royal Navy base first
Before the RAN, the Royal Navy ran Nowra for the British Pacific Fleet.
HMS Nabbington, Mobile Naval Air Base No. 1, paid off on 15 November 1945.
Fleet Air Arm Museum
Australia’s naval aviation museum stands inside the base perimeter.
Opened in 1990; more than 34 aircraft and helicopters, from a Sopwith Pup to an A-4G Skyhawk.

01Torpedo bombers and the British Pacific Fleet, 1939–1946読む
The Naval Historical Society of Australia dates the decision to build an airfield at Nowra to the months after war was declared in 1939. Wikipedia, drawing on the same naval history, has land bought in June 1939 and the field declared operational in June 1941, but the Air Force only began operating there on 7 May 1942. Its first residents were RAAF squadrons with Bristol Beaufort torpedo bombers, and in 1942–43 Martin Marauders of the US Army Air Forces trained there as torpedo bombers. The society also records US Army Air Corps and Royal Netherlands East Indies Air Force personnel passing through.
In late 1944 the Royal Navy arrived. The British Pacific Fleet needed shore bases for the squadrons of its carriers, and Nowra became HMS Nabbington, home of Mobile Naval Air Base No. 1. The dates differ by source: the naval society has operations starting in late October 1944, Wikipedia’s MONAB article gives commissioning in Britain on 28 October 1944 and in Australia on 2 January 1945, and its Albatross article dates MONAB I’s operations from 21 December 1944. All agree that Nabbington paid off on 15 November 1945. MONAB V, HMS Nabswick, moved in from Jervis Bay and stayed until 18 March 1946, after which the field went back to the RAAF on care and maintenance.
02The carrier navy’s home, 1948–1982読む
On 3 July 1947 the Commonwealth Defence Council approved a Fleet Air Arm to be controlled and operated by the RAN, and on 31 August 1948 Nowra was commissioned as HMAS Albatross. The aircraft came by sea: in May 1949 HMAS Sydney landed 805 and 816 Squadrons with Sea Furies and Fireflies, and 808 and 817 Squadrons followed in November 1950. A control tower was built in 1958.
For the next 33 years the base worked to the rhythm of the carriers. Squadrons embarked when Sydney or, from 1955, Melbourne went to sea and came ashore to Nowra when she returned. The Sea Venom and the Gannet arrived in the mid-1950s; in 1967 the A-4G Skyhawk and the S-2E Tracker replaced them. 816 Squadron, one of the two original units, flew Fireflies, then Gannets, then Trackers until Melbourne was decommissioned on 30 June 1982 and the squadron disbanded. With her went the reason for fixed-wing flying at Albatross.
03After the carriers: Skyhawks from New Zealand and Learjets for hire読む
Without a carrier, Albatross became a helicopter base, but jets did not disappear. From February 1991 No. 2 Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Air Force was based at Nowra with A-4K and TA-4K Skyhawks and 50–60 personnel, to give the RAN realistic air threats in fleet training. In August 1994 its Skyhawks sank the decommissioned patrol boat HMAS Adroit in an exercise. The detachment ended when the New Zealand government disbanded the RNZAF’s air combat force on 13 December 2001.
Civil contractors filled the gap. Since 1986 target-towing jets — Learjets and IAI Westwinds — have flown from Nowra for the navy, operated in turn by Lloyd Aviation, Fleet Support, Pel-Air and Air Affairs Australia. On 24 March 2016 Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull opened Air Affairs’ new facility at the Albatross Aviation Technology Park; under a Jet Aircraft Support Contract that began on 1 October 2015 the company flew seven Learjets and had grown from 35 to about 85 staff.
04Today: the Seahawk base読む
The navy names Naval Air Station HMAS Albatross as the home of the MH-60R Seahawk when it is not deployed. 816 and 808 Squadrons provide the flights that embark in the fleet’s warships, and 725 Squadron, recommissioned on 11 June 2015, trains their crews. 808 came to the Romeo the hard way: it had re-formed in 2011 with the MRH90 Taipan, and converted after the navy stopped flying the Taipan in April 2022.
723 Squadron, the oldest unit on the station (commissioned 7 April 1952), runs the Joint Helicopter School on the EC135 T2+ for Navy and Army crews. 822X Squadron, formed on 25 October 2018, is the RAN’s first developmental squadron and flies ship-launched uncrewed aircraft: ScanEagles since 2013, the Camcopter S-100 until 30 June 2024, and, according to Wikipedia, the Integrator since October 2025. Air Force controllers of No. 453 Squadron run the tower, and the Fleet Air Arm Museum, opened in 1990, keeps the station’s past on show.

ここで何が起こったのか
The Tracker fire
A fire lit deliberately near the aircraft hangars, by a member of the Fleet Air Arm according to Wikipedia, destroyed or seriously damaged twelve of the thirteen S-2 Trackers the navy owned. The Naval Historical Society records that it left the combined strength of 816 and 851 Squadrons at one serviceable Tracker. Wikipedia, citing contemporary Canberra Times reports, notes a court martial afterwards. No deaths are reported in the sources checked.
The Historic Flight loses its Scout
Months after the RAN Historic Flight formed at Albatross, its Westland Scout helicopter crashed at an air show in November 1985, according to a 2021 history by Carl Robinson and Terry Hetherington in the Naval Historical Review. The location of the air show and any injuries are not given in that account. The Scout was later rebuilt for static display; the flight itself was grounded by the navy in 1999.
New Zealand Skyhawks sink HMAS Adroit
The RNZAF Skyhawks of No. 2 Squadron, based at Nowra to act as the enemy in RAN fleet training, sank the decommissioned patrol boat HMAS Adroit during a naval exercise, according to Wikipedia. The squadron’s presence at an Australian naval air station was unusual in itself: about 50–60 New Zealanders and a handful of A-4K and TA-4K Skyhawks lived at Albatross for a decade.
Racing cars on the runways
In the gap between the RAAF and the navy, the empty airfield was used for motor racing: Wikipedia records the 1947 Championship of New South Wales held there on 16 June 1947, and a further meeting on 7 December 1952, when the station was already HMAS Albatross. The details rest on motor-sport histories cited by Wikipedia and were not checked against a contemporary report.
