From the MiG-15 Fagot to the MiG-35 4++ multirole fighter jet

The infographic below shows the most famous development of the legendary Mikoyan-Gurevich Design bureau (today Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG or RSK MiG). The former Soviet design bureau was named after its founders, Artem Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich. [CSSBUTTON target="https://www.migflug.com/en/jet-fighter-flights/flying-with-a-jet/mig-15-fagot-in-czech-republic.html" color="#F22F2C"]Fly the MiG-15 yourself![/CSSBUTTON] About 12,000 MiG-15 Fagots have been built, and on top of that around 6,000 under license, like the Polish Lim-1 or the Chinese J-2). A total of 44 nations operated the MiG-15, with the Albanian Air Force they remained in service until the late 1990s. The latest development, the MiG-35 is a 4++ generation fighter jet, well known for the impressive performance at airshows, thanks to vector thrust. The Russian Air Force plans to operate the MiG-35 from 2014.

MiGFlug and the Mikoyan fighter jets

MiGFlug offered a lot of these famous Mikoyan fighter jets in the past.

Zhukvosky/Ramenskoe Airbase, Russia

Near Moscow, where the MAKS airshow takes place and the famous Gromov Flight Research Institute is located. Unfortunately Zhukovsky airbase closed for tourist fighter jet flights in 2006. Until 2006, we offered the following there: - MiG-21 Fishbed supersonic flights - MiG-23 Flogger supersonic flights - MiG-25 Foxbat Edge of Space flights (stratosphere flights up to 25km) - MiG-29 Fulcrum supersonic flights And additionally Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker and Aero L-39 Albatros flights

Sokol Airbase, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

Sokol Airbase is still operational today, unfortunately prices are rising constantly and the service could be better. At the beginning of the Sokol operations in 2006, the MiG-31 Foxhound was offered for MiG-31 Edge of Space flights. They stopped in 2009. Since then only the MiG-29 Fulcrum supersonic flight is offered, also for Edge of Space flights to 21-23 km altitude. [CSSBUTTON target="https://www.migflug.com/en/jet-fighter-flights/flying-with-a-jet/mig-29-edge-of-space.html" color="#F22F2C"]Fly to the Edge of Space![/CSSBUTTON]

MiG-15 flight, Poland

Since late 2012 we offered MiG-15 flights in East Poland. The MiG-15 has a never exceed speed of Mach-1, so it is a pretty powerful fighter jet. Even though it is smaller than the L-39 Albatros, it is 3 times as powerful as the Czech trainer and light ground attack aircraft. From 2015 - MiG-15 flights for tourists are offered in Czech Republic.

2/3 of the operational fighter jets offered

To summarize, of the 9 operational Mikoyan aircraft shown in the infographic above, MiGFlug has offered no less than 6 for civilian flights so far: The MiG-15, the MiG-21, the MiG-23, the MiG-25, the MiG-29 and the MiG-31. This is pretty remarkable as 5 of them are Mach-2 supersonic jets. Today the only supersonic jet available worldwide is the MiG-29 Fulcrum. We hope this is going to change.

What is Mikoyan and what jets did it build?

Mikoyan, originally the Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau and today part of the Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG, is the maker of the famous "MiG" fighters. It was named after founders Artem Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich. Its line stretches from the MiG-15 of the late 1940s through the MiG-21, MiG-25 and MiG-29 to the modern MiG-35 multirole fighter.

How many MiG-15s were built?

Around 12,000 MiG-15 "Fagot" fighters were produced, plus roughly 6,000 more built under licence, including the Polish Lim-1 and Chinese variants. A total of 44 nations operated the type. Remarkably durable, the MiG-15 stayed in Albanian Air Force service into the late 1990s, decades after its 1949 debut. It first saw combat over Korea.

What is the MiG-35?

The MiG-35 is Mikoyan's modern "4++" generation multirole fighter, the latest evolution of the MiG-29 line. It is known for spectacular airshow displays thanks to thrust-vectoring engines that give it extreme agility. It carries advanced avionics and weapons while keeping the broad family resemblance to earlier Fulcrums.

What are fighter jet generations?

Fighter jet generations group aircraft by their technology and capabilities. Early jets like the MiG-15 are first generation; later types added supersonic speed, radar missiles and advanced avionics. Modern "4++" jets such as the MiG-35 sit just below the stealthy fifth generation. The framework helps compare jets designed decades apart. See a full explanation of fighter jet generations.

Which MiG jets have been offered for civilian flights?

Six Mikoyan types have been flown by civilian passengers: the MiG-15, MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25, MiG-29 and MiG-31. Five of these are Mach-2 supersonic jets, a remarkable lineup. The MiG-25 Foxbat even offered stratospheric "Edge of Space" flights. Today the MiG-29 Fulcrum is the only supersonic jet still available.

What was special about the MiG-25 Foxbat?

The MiG-25 Foxbat was a Soviet high-altitude interceptor built for extreme speed, capable of roughly Mach 3 in short bursts. It could climb to exceptional altitudes, which made it one of the fastest and highest-flying combat jets ever. For a time civilians could even ride it on stratospheric flights. A MiG-25 set an absolute altitude record.

Where were Russian MiG flights based?

Many Russian MiG passenger flights operated from Sokol Airbase near Nizhny Novgorod, which remains active. From 2006 it offered MiG-31 Foxhound Edge of Space flights, but these stopped in 2009. Since then the MiG-29 Fulcrum has been the main jet offered there, including Edge of Space climbs to around 21,000 to 23,000 metres.

What does the MiG-29 offer that earlier MiGs did not?

The MiG-29 Fulcrum combined high agility with modern sensors, including a helmet-mounted sight that let pilots aim missiles by looking at a target. For civilians it remains the standout because it is the last supersonic MiG still flying passengers, and the only one offering true Edge of Space flights to the stratosphere.
