Águilas Aztecas: how the team came to be and what it flies today

Squadron 402 and the team’s creation

The Águilas Aztecas are flown by pilots of Air Squadron 402, a T-6C Texan II unit at the Ixtepec air base in Oaxaca, formerly Military Air Base No. 2. Unlike Mexico’s two older teams, which come from the Colegio del Aire and the tactical school EMAATFA, this team is drawn from an operational squadron. Its name was formally approved on 17 January 2025, and its purpose, in the air force’s words as reported by México Aeroespacial, is to bring the armed forces closer to Mexican society.

Displays since 2025

The team was presented on Mexican Air Force Day, 10 February 2025, at the inauguration of Military Air Base No. 20 at Tulum, the centrepiece of the air force’s 110th anniversary. Its T-6Cs are painted blue with golden wings on the tail. In April 2025 seven aircraft flew to Santa Lucía for the FAMEX aerospace fair, and on 31 May 2026 seven T-6Cs with twelve pilots displayed over the bay at Puerto Vallarta for the city’s anniversary.
