His Majesty’s Armed Forces Air Wing

The Air Wing of His Majesty’s Armed Forces of Tonga was created on 4 May 1996 with a single Beech 18 and added a Citabria trainer in 1999 — and although it is still listed as one of the three branches of Tonga’s 750-strong forces, no source reached for this page shows a Tongan military aircraft flying today; when the kingdom needs air power, as after the 2022 eruption, it comes from New Zealand and Australia.

The Tongan Air Wing story: a Beech 18, a Citabria and a runway cleared by hand

1939–1946: a defence force born in war

Tonga’s armed forces date from the start of the Second World War. The Tonga Defence Service came into existence in 1939, English Wikipedia’s military history of Tonga says; in 1943 New Zealand helped train two Tongan contingents that fought in the Solomon Islands campaign, and New Zealand and US troops were stationed on Tongatapu, which became a staging point for shipping. The airfield that is now Fuaʻamotu International Airport was built in those years by the US Navy’s 1st Construction Battalion with labour from the US Army’s 147th Infantry Regiment, as a heavy-bomber field with three coral runways. The force was disbanded at the end of the war and re-formed in 1946, but for half a century it had no aircraft.

1996–1999: a Beech 18 and a Citabria

That changed, briefly and modestly, in the 1990s. On 4 May 1996 the Air Wing was created and a Beech 18 was taken into service, English Wikipedia records; in 1999 a Citabria was obtained to help with training for the Beech 18. Wikipedia’s List of air forces still carries a Tongan Air Wing dated 1996. Nothing more is published in the sources reached — no registrations, no unit strength, no record of what the two aircraft flew or when they stopped. A twin-engined Second World War-era design and a two-seat aerobatic trainer were the whole of Tonga’s military aviation, and neither appears in any later account checked for this page.

Deployments without aircraft: Bougainville to Afghanistan

Tonga’s soldiers and marines, meanwhile, went abroad without air support of their own. The Defence Services served on peacekeeping in Bougainville in the early 1990s and with the regional force in Solomon Islands from 2002; the Royal Tongan Marines served in Iraq, returning in December 2004 and ending the mission in December 2008, and in Afghanistan from February 2011 to April 2014, per English Wikipedia. At home, the 2006 riots in Nuku’alofa were ended by Tongan Security Forces with troops of a New Zealand-led Joint Task Force. None of these operations involved a Tongan aircraft in any source reached, which is why this page records no combat.

2013: His Majesty’s Armed Forces

In 2013 the Tonga Defence Services took their present form as His Majesty’s Armed Forces, and the commander’s title changed from Commander of the Tonga Defence Services to Chief of Defence Staff. English Wikipedia lists three branches — Land Force, Maritime Force and Air Wing — under King Tupou VI as Commander-in-Chief, with headquarters at Vilai Barracks in Nuku’alofa and 750 active personnel. The Air Wing therefore still exists on paper. The Maritime Force operates Guardian-class patrol boats, per English Wikipedia — the type Australia supplies under its Pacific Maritime Security Program, whose Aerial Surveillance Program flies intelligence-driven patrols for 15 Pacific island countries; Australia’s page does not name Tonga individually.

2022–2026: a runway cleared by hand

The clearest recent picture of Tongan military aviation is of other people’s aircraft. After the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai eruption of January 2022, New Zealand sent a P-3K2 Orion to survey the damage, and on 20 January its first C-130 Hercules landed at Fuaʻamotu — after, in the words of Rear Admiral Jim Gilmour, “a mammoth effort by His Majesty’s armed forces to clear that runway by hand”. That is a fair summary of the Air Wing in 2026: Tonga’s forces keep the runway open, and the aircraft are foreign. No acquisition, donation or loan of an aircraft to HMAF between 2024 and 2026 was found in the sources reached.

That changed, briefly and modestly, in the 1990s. On 4 May 1996 the Air Wing was created and a Beech 18 was taken into service, English Wikipedia records; in 1999 a Citabria was obtained to help with training for the Beech 18.His Majesty’s Armed Forces Air Wing (Tonga) · verified 2026-10-01
