A shipyard on the Adriatic built wooden seaplanes so good they took 41 world records, then gave Italy its main wartime bomber, the Alcione, all from the drawing board of Filippo Zappata.
CANT: the company and the aircraft that made its name
A shipping family takes to the air
CANT began with a shipping dynasty. The Cosulich family, whose Cosulich Line sailed from Trieste to the Americas, opened the Cantiere Navale Triestino shipyard at Monfalcone in 1908, when it was still Austro-Hungarian territory. They already owned an airline, SISA, and in 1923 they opened an aircraft works alongside the slipways. When the yard merged with Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino in 1929 to form Cantieri Riuniti dell’Adriatico, the aircraft became CRDA CANT, but the shipbuilders’ skill with wood stayed in every airframe.
Zappata and the record seaplanes
The man who made CANT famous was Filippo Zappata, a wounded First World War infantry officer turned engineer. After a spell at Blériot in France, he was brought back in 1933 at the request of air minister Italo Balbo. Zappata believed the most aerodynamic aeroplane was also the most beautiful. With test pilot Mario Stoppani his designs set 41 world aeronautical records. The Z.501 Gabbiano flying boat flew 4,130 km from Monfalcone to Massawa in 1934, and the Z.506 Airone floatplane took 10 world records in 1936 and ten more in 1937. CANT grew from 340 workers to 5,500.
Airone, Alcione and the war
The Airone became a workhorse of the war, flying reconnaissance, bombing and air-sea rescue; more than 320 were completed, some by Piaggio under licence. The Z.501 was the backbone of maritime reconnaissance, with 202 in service in June 1940. Zappata’s three-engine Z.1007 Alcione bomber, first flown in March 1937, became one of the Regia Aeronautica’s principal bombers, still built largely of wood. The twin-engine Z.1018 Leone arrived too late, entering service only in July 1943. The Monfalcone shipyard survives today as part of Fincantieri.
