FAQ: L-39 Albatros Jet Flights in New Zealand

General
Can I fly a real fighter jet in New Zealand?

Yes – a genuine ex-military L-39 Albatros, flying from Tauranga. You fly with a professional pilot, need no licence, and experience real aerobatics over some of the North Island’s most beautiful scenery.

What military jet can I fly in New Zealand?

You’ll fly the Aero L-39 Albatros, a Czech-built advanced jet trainer with a tandem cockpit and ejection seats – perfect for an adrenaline-packed Top Gun-style flight.

Where do the L-39 jet flights in New Zealand take place?

From Tauranga Airport at Mount Maunganui, in the Bay of Plenty on the North Island. Depending on the program you fly coastal low-level runs along the beaches, or head inland over the Rotorua lakes district with its volcanic landscape – with a few rolls thrown in on the way home. Every MiGFlug jet and location worldwide is on the flights & prices overview.

Do I need flying experience or a licence to fly the L-39 in New Zealand?

No. After a full ground briefing you can take the controls of the L-39 yourself with the pilot guiding you, in constant voice contact. The more relaxed you are, the more hands-on flying you’ll get.

Am I fit and healthy enough for an L-39 jet flight?

If you are fit enough for a commercial flight or a light-aircraft experience, you will generally be fine. You should be able to climb in and out of the cockpit with minimal assistance, and you will sign a declaration covering this and any medical conditions relevant to the flight. If in doubt, ask your doctor – or simply ask us.

What are the height and weight limits for the L-39 jet flight?

The maximum weight in New Zealand is 145 kg (320 lb) – more generous than at most of our locations – and there is no minimum. Height is rarely an issue; if you are around 2 m or taller, mention it when booking and we will confirm the cockpit fit.

Is there a minimum age for an L-39 jet flight in New Zealand?

The minimum age is 16 with a parent’s or guardian’s consent; from 18 you fly without consent. There is no upper limit – young at heart counts. We have flown guests well into their nineties at other locations!

How safe is the L-39 flight in New Zealand?

Safety is the first consideration in everything we do. The flights operate under New Zealand’s strict adventure-aviation certification, flown by professional pilots with military fast-jet and airline backgrounds – and MiGFlug’s global record stands at more than 20 years, 10,000+ flights and zero incidents.

Are these real jet flights, and can I verify the offer?

Completely real – and please do verify: independent reviews on Google (5.0), Trustpilot (4.8) and Tripadvisor (4.9), hundreds of customer voices on our testimonials page, and reference customers on request. MiGFlug has arranged fighter jet flights since 2004.

Your Flight Day
How long does an L-39 jet flight experience in New Zealand take?

About 2 hours all in: flight-suit fitting, the pre-flight briefing, the flight itself (20 or 30 minutes depending on your package), then photos and a debrief with the pilot.

What does the day of an L-39 jet flight look like?

You arrive, get fitted with a flight suit and walk through the pre-flight briefing with your pilot – then you fly. One thing to know in advance: personal phones, GoPros and cameras cannot be taken into the cockpit for safety reasons. Instead, every flight is recorded by fixed onboard cameras and a video of your flight can be purchased, while the ground team takes photos for you and your family.

Should I arrive before my booked L-39 flight time?

Your booking time is when you arrive and meet the pilot, not the take-off time, so there’s no need to come earlier. Just leave a margin for traffic so you arrive relaxed.

Booking
When can I book an L-39 jet flight in New Zealand during the year?

Being in the southern hemisphere, the most settled conditions are generally spring to autumn (around November to April), though flights run year-round. If weather ever grounds your flight, we reschedule it at no cost.

How do I check available dates for an L-39 flight in New Zealand?

All open dates sit in a live calendar on our booking page – pick a slot, or book an open date and schedule later. Popular dates fill first, so the earlier you book the better.

How much does it cost to fly a jet in New Zealand?

New Zealand jet flights start from $3,200 for the 20-minute coastal flight; the 30-minute programs are $3,400. Open dates are in the booking calendar.

Can I choose a refundable booking?

Yes – the refundable option is available during checkout.

Entered the wrong date or chose the wrong package?

Not a problem – changes are free of charge. Send us a note with what needs adjusting and we will take care of it.

What if my New Zealand flight cannot take place as planned?

Then you simply rebook for a more suitable day, free of charge – that applies to unsuitable weather, an unavailable aircraft or pilot, and to you falling ill. Just contact us as soon as you can.

How many flights fit into a day in New Zealand?

New Zealand is our group location: with several L-39s on site, up to twenty flights per day are possible – and even formation flights, with two jets in the air at the same time. Groups brief together and fly one after another, or wingtip to wingtip.

Gift
Can I give an L-39 jet flight in New Zealand as a gift?

Yes. An L-39 gift voucher is open-dated (and can even be open-location), arrives as an instant printable certificate, and fixes today’s price – nothing is sent to the recipient, so the surprise stays with you.

What can I hand over when gifting the New Zealand flight?

A personalized gift voucher – free, printable and ready for the big moment. Optionally add a handpainted aircraft model (each handmade in Ukraine, shipped directly to you) or the engraved Swiss watch from our Maurice de Mauriac cooperation (here). Both options appear right after booking.

Can the gifted person change to another flight?

Yes, anytime and free of charge. Book the flight you think they will love; if they prefer another program or location, we simply rebook.

★★★★★

I had an amazing experience flying in an L-39 jet with Craig as my pilot. From the moment I arrived, I felt very welcome. Craig, Annie, and the dedicated ground crew were fantastic. Craig explained all the Top Gun maneuvers and made sure to check in with me after each one, which was crucial since I hadn’t experienced high G-forces in a long time. Highly recommended for anyone with the same dream!

Flying the amazing L-39 aircraft was a fantastic experience. It far exceeded flying a Cessna, which I’m used to. The Top Gun maneuvers were thrilling and made for an unforgettable adventure.
