Nevatim Airbase
Active (Israel’s F-35I Adir base, named by the IAF and Lockheed Martin; first KC-46A tanker arrived on 28 May 2026)
Nevatim Airbase: what it was built for and what flies there now
Nevatim lies in the northern Negev, about 15 km east-south-east of Beersheba. A rough strip on the site, then called Malhata, served the Haganah’s air service in 1947, but the base itself is a product of the peace with Egypt: when Israel agreed at Camp David to give back Sinai and its air bases, it built three new ones in the Negev. Ramon and Ovda were built by American contractors; Nevatim, according to Wikipedia, was built between 1980 and 1983 with joint Israeli and American funding and opened in October 1983. Bedouin families living on the land were moved for its construction.
Today it is the most strategically important base in the air force. The first two F-35I Adirs landed here on 12 December 2016, and Lockheed Martin names Nevatim as the centre of Israel’s F-35 integration and training; the IAF declared the type operational in December 2017 and in May 2018 said it was the first air force to use the F-35 in combat. On 28 May 2026 the first Boeing KC-46A Gideon tanker arrived to form 46 Squadron.
That importance made Nevatim the main target of Iran’s missile attacks on Israel. On 13–14 April 2024 a US official said five Iranian ballistic missiles hit it, causing minimal damage; on 1 October 2024 analysts counted between 20 and 32 impacts, while the IDF said that no aircraft, weapons or soldiers were hit. Iran claimed far greater damage, which the evidence did not support. Coordinates and runway data here come from Wikipedia, not from the Israeli AIP.

What Nevatim Airbase is known for
Israel’s F-35 base
The first F-35Is outside the United States landed here, and Lockheed Martin names Nevatim as Israel’s F-35 base.
Two Adirs, Nos. 901 and 902, arrived on 12 December 2016; operational capability was declared in December 2017.
Built because of a peace treaty
Nevatim replaced air bases Israel gave up in Sinai under the 1979 peace treaty with Egypt.
Built 1980–1983 with joint Israeli and US funding; opened October 1983 (Wikipedia).
Iran’s main target
Nevatim was the base hit hardest in Iran’s missile attacks of April and October 2024.
Analysts counted 20–32 missile impacts on 1 October 2024; the IDF said no aircraft were hit.
The tankers’ new home
Israel’s new KC-46A tankers are based here alongside the old Boeing 707s they replace.
First KC-46A Gideon landed on 28 May 2026, 53 years after the 707 tankers entered service in 1973.
A runway of almost four kilometres
Nevatim has three runways, the longest of them nearly 4 km.
Runway 07/25 is 3,900 m long, according to Wikipedia.

01Out of Sinai: why Nevatim was built読む
The Camp David framework of September 1978 committed Israel to return Sinai, and with it the air bases it had built or captured there, including Etzion near Eilat and Refidim in western Sinai. To make the withdrawal acceptable, the US Secretary of Defense, Harold Brown, offered American help to relocate the bases. The US Army Corps of Engineers built two new bases, Ramon and Ovda, between 1979 and 1982 at a cost of about $1 billion, finishing early for an inauguration in May 1982.
Nevatim was the third. Wikipedia says it was built from 1980 to 1983 with joint Israeli and American funding and opened in October 1983, on a site where the Haganah had laid a rough strip in 1947 and which planners had once earmarked as an airport for Beersheba. Its construction required the relocation of Bedouin families, who received compensation, according to Wikipedia. The first jets to arrive, in 1983, were the A-4N Skyhawks of 116 Squadron from Tel Nof.
02The F-35 era読む
Israel was the first country to choose the F-35 through the US Foreign Military Sales process, signing a letter of agreement in October 2010, and named it Adir, ‘Mighty One’, according to Lockheed Martin. The first Israeli F-35 was rolled out in Fort Worth on 22 June 2016, a date Lockheed Martin’s page gives as its arrival in Israel; the first two aircraft actually landed at Nevatim on 12 December 2016, the date given by Wikipedia and the Israeli press it cites.
The IAF declared its first F-35 squadron operational on 6 December 2017. On 22 May 2018 the air force commander, Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin, said Israel had become the first country to use the F-35 in combat. Wikipedia says the type has since flown thousands of sorties in the Gaza war. Israel has ordered 100 Adirs, after a fourth squadron of 25 was announced in May 2026, according to Wikipedia.
03Tankers and the Wing of Zion読む
The government’s Boeing 767 ‘Wing of Zion’, Israel’s equivalent of Air Force One, also has its own hangar here and made its first official flight in July 2024, according to Wikipedia.
The next generation arrived on 28 May 2026, when the first Boeing KC-46A, named Gideon in Israel, landed at Nevatim to form 46 Squadron. Israel Defense reported that it will gradually replace the Re’em 707 tankers, in service since 1973, with both flying in parallel during the changeover. The squadron commander, identified only as Lt. Col. A., said the aircraft "can reach any point in the world."
04Under Iranian fire, 2024読む
On the night of 13–14 April 2024 Iran launched 170 drones, 30 cruise missiles and 120 ballistic missiles at Israel, by the IDF’s count, in what it called retaliation for the strike on its consulate in Damascus on 1 April. Iran said it hit Nevatim and Ramon. A US official said five ballistic missiles hit Nevatim, damaging a C-130, an unused runway and empty storage facilities, and Israel said the base remained operational with minor damage. A seven-year-old Bedouin girl, Amina Hassouna, was seriously injured by shrapnel in the Arad area.
On 1 October 2024 Iran fired again, and this time many missiles reached the base. Wikipedia’s account, drawing on the Washington Post and analysts of Planet Labs imagery, puts the number of impacts at between 20 and 32, with a hangar and a taxiway damaged. The IDF said office and maintenance buildings were hit but no soldiers, weapons or aircraft, and that the attack had no operational impact. Iranian state media claimed that up to 20 F-35s had been destroyed; no evidence was produced to support that claim.

The F-15 that flew home on one wing
During a training exercise over the Negev, an A-4 Skyhawk of 116 Squadron collided with an F-15D from Tel Nof. The Skyhawk pilot ejected, injured. The F-15D lost almost all of its right wing but its pilot landed it at Ramon, according to Wikipedia. The aircraft, No. 957, was repaired and, Wikipedia says, flew in the October 2024 strikes on Iran.
The death of Assaf Ramon
Capt. Assaf Ramon, son of Ilan Ramon, the Israeli astronaut killed in the Columbia disaster of 2003, died when his F-16A crashed during a training flight over the southern West Bank. Wikipedia says he was presumed to have lost consciousness from G-forces, and that no fault had been reported before the impact. His father had flown F-16A No. 243 of 140 Squadron in Operation Opera.
The first direct Iranian attack
Iran launched 170 drones, 30 cruise missiles and 120 ballistic missiles at Israel, by the IDF’s count. Iran said it hit Nevatim and Ramon. A US official said five ballistic missiles hit Nevatim, damaging a C-130, an unused runway and empty storage buildings; Israel said the base stayed operational with minor damage. A seven-year-old girl, Amina Hassouna, was seriously injured by shrapnel in the Arad area.
Twenty or more impacts
Iran’s second direct missile attack hit Nevatim much harder. Analysis by the Washington Post and of Planet Labs imagery, as summarised by Wikipedia, put impacts on the base at between 20 and 32, damaging a hangar and a taxiway. The IDF said office buildings and maintenance areas were damaged but no soldiers, weapons or aircraft were hit. Iranian state media claimed that up to 20 F-35s were destroyed; no evidence supported that claim.
