Tandil Air Base (VI Air Brigade): what it was built for and what flies there now

Tandil, in the south of Buenos Aires Province, is the base of the VI Air Brigade and the place where the Argentine Air Force has kept its air-defence fighters for most of the past half-century. Zona Militar lists the Gloster Meteor, the Mirage IIIEA and the IAI Dagger and Finger among its aircraft; the Dagger group formed here in 1978 and flew from San Julián and Río Grande in the 1982 war over the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas). The aerodrome is listed by the Ministry of Transport as Tandil/Héroes de Malvinas.

When the Mirages and Fingers retired in 2015 the brigade was left with Pampa jet trainers, and for a decade Argentina had no supersonic fighters. The purchase of 24 F-16A/B MLUs from Denmark, signed on 16 April 2024, named Tandil as their home. The base is being rebuilt for them: an arrester system for its 2,550-metre runway 01/19, new hangars, aprons and a simulator centre. An F-16BM ground-instruction airframe was presented here on 24 February 2025 and the CICMA F-16 maintenance school opened on 11 March 2026.

Until the works are finished the flying F-16s are at Área Material Río Cuarto, where twelve had arrived by 29 September 2026. No date for their move to Tandil has been published.

01From Meteors to Daggers読む

Zona Militar, describing the base in June 2025, lists the aircraft that have defined Tandil: the Gloster Meteor, the Mirage IIIEA, the IAI Dagger and its upgraded form, the Finger, and since 2015 the IA-63 Pampa as a stopgap. Most of the buildings the F-16 programme is now replacing date, by the same account, from the 1960s, which says something about how long Tandil has been a fighter base and how little was spent on it in between.

The unit that made its name here is Grupo 6 de Caza. English Wikipedia, summarising published histories, says the group was formed in 1978 to fly the Dagger, the Israeli-built Mirage 5 derivative: 26 aircraft arrived in 1978 and 13 more in 1980, 35 single-seat Dagger As and four two-seat Dagger Bs. It worked alongside Grupo 8, which flew the Mirage IIIEA interceptor. The Daggers were later rebuilt as Fingers, which Wikipedia describes as brought to roughly Kfir C.2 standard, with French equipment replacing British systems in the final Finger IIIB form.

021982: the Daggers go south読む

In the Falklands (Malvinas) war the Daggers did not fly from Tandil at all. They were dispersed to Puerto San Julián and to the naval air station at Río Grande in Tierra del Fuego, at the limit of their radius, and flew against British ships and troops from 1 May to the end of the fighting. English Wikipedia counts 153 Dagger sorties against ground and naval targets over 45 days and lists HMS Antrim, Brilliant, Broadsword and Arrow as damaged by cannon fire and HMS Plymouth and Ardent by bombs; these are attributions drawn from British and Argentine accounts, not an official tally from either government.

The cost was heavy. The same account gives eleven Daggers lost in combat: nine to AIM-9L Sidewinders fired by Sea Harriers, one to a Sea Wolf missile and one to a Rapier surface-to-air missile, according to the British-sourced breakdown Wikipedia uses. The Argentine Air Force, for its part, commemorates 1 May 1982 as its baptism of fire: it says 76 sorties were flown that day and names 14 of its men killed on that date, among them Lieutenant José Leónidas Ardiles.

03A fighter base without fighters読む

The Mirage IIIEA/DA ended its service in 2015, and with it Argentina’s supersonic air defence. Zona Militar recalls that Tandil was then given IA-63 Pampa II jet trainers so that the brigade kept flying and its pilots kept some tactical currency; the Pampa, a subsonic advanced trainer built in Córdoba, was never meant to be a fighter. For about a decade the VI Air Brigade was an air-defence wing in name only.

That gap is why the 2024 decision matters so much here. When Argentina signed for 24 ex-Danish F-16A/B MLUs on 16 April 2024, Zona Militar reported that the VI Air Brigade at Tandil would be their home, returning the base to the role it was built for.

04Getting ready for the F-16読む

Tandil was not ready in 2024. Zona Militar’s June 2025 visit describes runway 01/19, 2,550 metres long, which is to receive an arrester system (possibly a BAK-12), together with work on hangars, taxiways and aprons and a new instruction centre to house simulators, including a DART deployable trainer. A government report to Congress, Jefatura de Gabinete Informe No. 142, confirmed in April 2025 that Tandil is the future home and that the jets would start at Área Material Río Cuarto in the meantime.

The first F-16 to reach Tandil will never fly. On the evening of 24 February 2025 the Ministry of Defence presented an F-16BM Block 10, numbered 25, as a ground-instruction airframe for pilots, mechanics and engineers; Defence Minister Luis Petri called the type “un verdadero salto tecnológico”. On 11 March 2026 the Air Force opened the CICMA F-16 maintenance training centre at the brigade. The flying jets, twelve of the 24 by 29 September 2026, remain at Río Cuarto until the works at Tandil are finished; no date for the move has been published.

Eleven Daggers lost

The Dagger group paid the highest price of any Argentine fighter unit in the war over the Falklands (Malvinas). English Wikipedia, drawing on British and Argentine histories, says eleven Daggers were lost in combat: nine to Sea Harriers’ AIM-9L Sidewinders, one to a Sea Wolf missile and one to a Rapier. Flying from San Julián and Río Grande, the Daggers had only minutes over the target. The ship damage that account credits to them is drawn from both sides’ published records and has not been confirmed by a single official source.

質疑応答

Everything people ask about Tandil Air Base (VI Air Brigade)

What is Tandil Air Base known for?
It is the home of the Argentine Air Force’s VI Air Brigade and of its air-defence fighters: the Mirage IIIEA and the IAI Dagger and Finger until 2015, and from the next few years the ex-Danish F-16. Its Daggers flew from San Julián and Río Grande in the 1982 war over the Falklands (Malvinas).
Are the F-16s at Tandil yet?
Not the flying ones. Tandil has an F-16BM ground-instruction airframe, presented on 24 February 2025, and the CICMA F-16 maintenance school, opened on 11 March 2026. The operational F-16s, twelve by 29 September 2026, fly from Área Material Río Cuarto until the runway arrester, hangars and simulator centre at Tandil are finished.
Why did the F-16s not go straight to Tandil?
The base needed work first. Zona Militar describes an arrester system for the 2,550-metre runway, new hangars, taxiways and aprons and a simulator centre, much of it replacing 1960s buildings. A government report to Congress in April 2025 named Río Cuarto as the interim base.
What did Tandil fly between 2015 and the F-16?
IA-63 Pampa II jet trainers. After the Mirage III and the Finger retired in 2015, Zona Militar says the brigade received Pampas so its pilots kept flying, though the Pampa is a subsonic trainer, not a fighter.
What did the Tandil Daggers do in the Falklands War?
They deployed to San Julián and Río Grande and attacked British ships and positions from 1 May 1982. English Wikipedia counts 153 sorties and eleven Daggers lost; the ships it lists as damaged come from both sides’ accounts and are attributed, not officially confirmed.
What is the airport at Tandil called?
The Ministry of Transport lists the aerodrome as Tandil/Héroes de Malvinas, ICAO SAZT, at an elevation of 175 metres. It is the same field as the VI Air Brigade.
Is Tandil Air Base (VI Air Brigade) still an active military air base?
Yes. Active (VI Air Brigade; designated home of the ex-Danish F-16 fleet, which flies from Río Cuarto until works at Tandil are finished). The Argentine Air Force operates it as VI Brigada Aérea (Comodoro Hernán Daydé per the official organisation chart, 2026), Training and Readiness Command.
What is the ICAO code of Tandil Air Base (VI Air Brigade)?
The ICAO code of Tandil Air Base (VI Air Brigade) is SAZT. The airfield sits at 175 m above sea level in Buenos Aires Province, at 37.2344 S, 59.2286 W.
How long is the runway at Tandil Air Base (VI Air Brigade)?
Tandil Air Base (VI Air Brigade) has one runway: 01/19, 2,550 m (8,366 ft).
Which squadrons are based at Tandil Air Base (VI Air Brigade)?
Tandil Air Base (VI Air Brigade) currently hosts Grupo 6 de Caza (F-16 element) flying the F-16AM/BM Fighting Falcon (MLU); Grupo 6 de Caza (Pampa element) flying the IA-63 Pampa II.
Which aircraft used to fly from Tandil Air Base (VI Air Brigade)?
Over its history Tandil Air Base (VI Air Brigade) has hosted Grupo 6 de Caza (Dagger and Finger) (1978–2015) with the IAI Dagger / Finger; Mirage IIIEA/DA squadron (—) with the Mirage IIIEA/DA; Gloster Meteor units (—) with the Gloster Meteor F.4.
