Golden Hawks: how the team came to be and what it flies today
An anniversary team
The Golden Hawks were formed in 1959 to mark the 35th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force and 50 years of powered flight in Canada since the Silver Dart of 1909. The plan was a six-aircraft team for a single year, but its popularity kept it going. Flying gold-painted Canadair Sabres of the Mark 5 and 6 versions from RCAF Station Chatham in New Brunswick and later Trenton, the team was led first by Sqn Ldr Fern Villeneuve and from 1961 by Flt Lt James McCombe.
Gold Sabres and losses
The first season was costly. On 12 March 1959 Flt Lt Sam Eisler was killed when his Sabre crashed in woods near Chatham during a co-solo practice, and on 10 August 1959 Flt Lt Jeb Kerr was killed when his Sabre collided with a Piper Tri-Pacer near McCall Field, Calgary, an accident that also killed the light aircraft’s two occupants. On 22 February 1961 Fg Off Jim McCann was killed after a mid-air collision in formation practice.
Disbandment and legacy
In all the team flew 317 shows across North America. It was disbanded, ostensibly for financial reasons, on 7 February 1964. Canada’s national team today, the Snowbirds, counts the Golden Hawks among its forebears, and several team Sabres are preserved, among them a Sabre 6 at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.
