RAF Tucano Display Team: how the team came to be and what it flies today

The basic fast-jet trainer

The Short Tucano T1, a Belfast-built development of the Embraer Tucano, replaced the Jet Provost at No 1 Flying Training School, RAF Linton-on-Ouse, from 1993. Flown by No 72(R) Squadron, it gave RAF, Royal Navy and foreign students basic fast-jet training before they moved on to the Hawk. The Tucano display was the public face of that course, a single aircraft flown by a qualified instructor on the UK air-show circuit.

End of the Tucano

The display ended with the aircraft. Flying training at Linton-on-Ouse ceased in October 2019 when the last students graduated and the course moved to RAF Valley on the Beechcraft Texan T1. On 25 October 2019 the Tucano was withdrawn from RAF service, and an aerial display at Linton-on-Ouse marked the occasion. The station’s aerodrome was notified to close on 18 December 2020.
