Heliopolis Aircraft Works: the company and the aircraft that made its name

A German trainer via Prague

Heliopolis Air Works was formed in Egypt in 1950 to build a local version of the Bücker Bü 181 Bestmann, the side-by-side training monoplane that had taught a generation of Luftwaffe pilots. The route was indirect: after the war Czechoslovakia had kept the Bestmann in production as the Zlín Z.381, and it was a Czechoslovak licence for that aircraft that Heliopolis took up in the 1950s. The Egyptian version was named Gomhouria, meaning Republic.

The Gomhouria

The first Gomhourias used the 105 hp Walter Minor engine, as the Czech aircraft did. Over time Heliopolis developed six marks of the aircraft: the Mk 2 switched to a 145 hp Continental C-145, the Mk 3 improved the undercarriage, the Mk 4 carried more fuel, the Mk 5 returned to the Walter Minor with a new mounting and the Mk 6 used the Continental O-300. At least 300 were built.

Trainers for the Arab world

About 150 went to the Egyptian Air Force, and the rest helped equip the young air forces of the region. Algeria received 12 from 1962, Egypt donated two to Libya in 1962 and several to Morocco in the early 1960s, Somalia took two in 1960 and Sudan four; Jordan and Saudi Arabia are also listed among operators. Egypt’s jet ambitions, the HA-200 and HA-300 programmes, were pursued at Helwan from 1959.
