כל מלחמה בה נלחם חיל האוויר של קניה
The Shifta War is included because it coincided with the founding of the air force, although no air role is documented in the sources checked. The toll of the 1982 coup attempt is disputed: President Moi gave 129 dead, while other estimates were higher. In Operation Linda Nchi, local officials quoted by Voice of America said an air strike on Jilib on 30 October 2011 killed at least ten people, while Kenya said the civilian deaths were caused by an exploding al-Shabaab vehicle; militant casualty figures are Kenyan claims. Where a consolidated sortie or loss figure exists in the official record it is given here; where accounts disagree, the range is shown and the disagreement named. Blank cells are blank because no figure could be verified, not because the fighting was small.

Not documented. The air force was formed during the war, but no air operations are recorded in the sources checked. The insurgency by Somali secessionists in Kenya’s north-east began around November 1963, weeks before independence, and ended with a ceasefire on 23 October 1967. It overlapped the founding of the Kenya Air Force in June 1964 and its first years with Beavers and Chipmunks. Whether the new air force flew liaison, supply or reconnaissance sorties in the north-east is plausible but was not documented in any source checked, so this entry records the war without crediting the air force with a role. תוֹצָאָה Ceasefire signed 23 October 1967. Air role UNVERIFIED; included because the war coincided with the service’s founding.

Junior air force personnel attempted to overthrow President Moi; rebels at Laikipia tried to send F-5Es and a Strikemaster to bomb Nairobi. The rising began at 3 a.m. on 1 August 1982 with the seizure of Eastleigh and then Embakasi. At 6 a.m. Senior Private Hezekiah Ochuka and Sergeant Pancras Oteyo Okumu broadcast on the Voice of Kenya that the military had taken power, in the name of a People’s Redemption Council, according to the Washington Post. The rebels held the studio but not the transmitters and had no army support. At Laikipia, a military court later heard, Corporal Bramwell Njereman, a 27-year-old armaments technician, ordered rockets prepared and forced a pilot at gunpoint to fly a bombing mission (UPI); Wikipedia’s account, based on Daily Nation reporting, says the pilots dumped their weapons in the Mount Kenya forest. By November 1982, 656 servicemen had been convicted of mutiny; twelve men were sentenced to death and four were hanged on 10 July 1985. תוֹצָאָה Crushed within hours by the army and paramilitary police; the air force was disbanded and reformed under army control as 82 Air Force. Casualty figures are contested; the government figure is the lowest. Aircraft involvement rests on court-martial reporting and later newspaper accounts.

F-5 strikes on al-Shabaab positions, helicopter close support and transport for the Kenyan ground advance. Kenyan troops crossed into Somalia on 16 October 2011. The air force’s F-5s attacked targets around Kismayo and other towns; Al Jazeera reported a jet strike on Kismayo on 24 October, which al-Shabaab said caused no casualties. On 30 October an air strike on Jilib killed at least ten people and wounded 45, according to local officials quoted by Voice of America, who said they were suspected Kenyan F-5s. Kenya acknowledged the raid; Prime Minister Raila Odinga said a burning al-Shabaab technical had driven into a civilian compound and exploded, causing the civilian casualties. The operation formally ended in 2012 when Kenya joined AMISOM. תוֹצָאָה Kenyan forces were integrated into AMISOM in June 2012. Civilian casualty figures at Jilib come from local officials; Kenya’s position is that the deaths were caused by an exploding al-Shabaab vehicle. Militant casualty figures are Kenyan claims.

Air support, helicopter and transport flights for the Kenyan contingent of the African Union mission. Kenya joined AMISOM in June 2012 and its forces, including air force elements, took part in the capture of Kismayo between 28 September and 1 October 2012, described as an operation by Kenyan AU naval, air and ground forces; the AMISOM spokesman, Col Cyrus Oguna, said no allied soldiers were lost. Kenya has stayed through every change of mandate. The US-funded MD 530F helicopters delivered in 2019 were bought explicitly for AMISOM and border operations against al-Shabaab, and the Daily Nation and Somaliland Standard have reported Kenyan aircraft losses in Somalia. Kenyan air strikes during the mission have been reported, but no Kenyan official tally or independent count was found in the sources checked. תוֹצָאָה Ongoing. ATMIS replaced AMISOM on 1 April 2022 and AUSSOM replaced ATMIS on 1 January 2025 under UN Security Council resolution 2767 (2024). Air strike numbers and casualties from Kenyan air operations in Somalia since 2012 were not found in an official or independent source checked.
