Indonesian Naval Aviation (Puspenerbal) combat record

Indonesian Wikipedia lists the naval air arm among the forces of Trikora, Dwikora and the PGRS/Paraku campaign, Seroja in East Timor and the security operations in Aceh, but the sources for this page describe no naval air sortie, engagement or loss in any of them, so none is claimed. The United Nations never recognised Indonesia’s annexation of East Timor, which ended after the 1999 vote. In 2024 a navy Panther served with the UN Maritime Task Force off Lebanon. Where a consolidated sortie or loss figure exists in the official record it is given here; where accounts disagree, the range is shown and the disagreement named. Blank cells are blank because no figure could be verified, not because the fighting was small.

Trikora was Sukarno’s campaign to take Western New Guinea from the Netherlands, backed by a huge Soviet arms purchase that Wikipedia says included 41 Mi-4 and nine Mi-6 helicopters, 22 Il-28 bombers and 26 Tu-16s, most of them for the air force. Its best-known naval action came on 15 January 1962, when four Indonesian torpedo boats carrying about 150 marines were spotted by a Dutch P2V-7B Neptune patrol aircraft in the Arafura Sea; one boat was sunk and Commodore Yos Sudarso was killed. Indonesian Wikipedia lists Trikora, and the planned amphibious Operation Jaya Wijaya, among the naval air arm’s operations. The navy’s Gannets had been ordered in January 1959, but the sources reached do not describe a single Indonesian naval air sortie in the campaign, so none is claimed here.

Resultaat The New York Agreement of 15 August 1962 passed Western New Guinea to UN administration and then, in 1963, to Indonesia.

Naval air participation rests on Indonesian Wikipedia’s list of operations only; casualty figures are for the whole campaign.

Confrontatie met Maleisië (Dwikora) en de PGRS/Paraku-campagneKonfrontasiIndonesian Navy aviation (ALRI) 1963–1966 Malaysia and United Kingdom and Commonwealth forces Fairey Gannet AS.4, Ilyushin Il-28T (from 1965)

Listed by Indonesian Wikipedia among the arm’s operations; no naval air actions are documented in the sources reached.

Dwikora was Sukarno’s confrontation with the new federation of Malaysia, fought mostly by small units in Borneo and by raids across the Strait of Malacca. The navy’s air arm was then at its most warlike: Gannets for anti-submarine patrol and, from 1965, a squadron of Soviet Il-28T torpedo bombers at Juanda. Indonesian Wikipedia lists Dwikora and the later PGRS/Paraku operations, against communist guerrillas on the Kalimantan border with Sarawak, among its operations. The sources reached give no sortie, engagement or loss for Indonesian naval aircraft in either, and none is claimed here; the British and Malaysian side’s account of the naval air threat was not found either.

Resultaat Confrontation ended after the change of government in Jakarta in 1966; the operations against the PGRS/Paraku guerrillas in West Kalimantan followed.

Naval air participation rests on Indonesian Wikipedia’s list of operations only.

Invasie en bezetting van Oost-Timor (Operatie Seroja)SerojaIndonesian Navy aviation 1975–1999 Fretilin and Falintil (East Timorese resistance)

Listed by Indonesian Wikipedia among the arm’s operations; no details found.

Operation Seroja began with the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in December 1975, an amphibious and airborne operation in which the navy carried troops ashore. Indonesian Wikipedia lists Seroja among the operations of the naval air arm, which by then flew transports, patrol aircraft and helicopters rather than strike types. The sources reached for this page give no account of naval aircraft, sorties or losses in East Timor, and no claim is made here. Indonesia’s official position at the time was that East Timor had chosen integration; the United Nations never recognised the annexation, and the occupation ended after the 1999 vote.

Resultaat Indonesia annexed East Timor in 1976, a move the United Nations did not recognise; East Timor voted for independence in 1999.

Naval air participation rests on Indonesian Wikipedia’s list of operations only. The political characterisation of the operation differs between Indonesia’s position of the time and the United Nations’.

The insurgency of the Free Aceh Movement ran from 1976 until the Helsinki peace agreement of 2005, which followed the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004. The sources reached for this page give no account of what naval aircraft flew there, and no claim is made here.

UN peacekeeping: a ship-borne Panther helicopter with the Maritime Task Force.

Indonesia contributes a corvette with a helicopter to the Maritime Task Force of UNIFIL, the UN force in Lebanon. Antara reported that the contingent Garuda XXVIII-O, aboard KRI Diponegoro-365 with Panther HS-1305 of the Naval Aviation Center, left Jakarta in late 2023, began operations in early 2024 and replaced KRI Frans Kaisiepo-368. UNIFIL’s Mission Air Safety Officer inspected the helicopter on 13 November 2024 in Beirut port, after earlier inspections in January and June, and it was cleared to continue. It is a peacekeeping deployment, not combat.

Resultaat The helicopter passed its third UN inspection on 13 November 2024 and continued the mission.

Only the 2024 rotation is documented in the sources reached; earlier Indonesian MTF rotations with helicopters are not dated here.
