Burundi’s civil war and the air arm
The civil war, sparked by the coup attempt of October 1993 in which President Melchior Ndadaye was killed, lasted by Wikipedia’s dates until 15 May 2005; the UN mission in Burundi estimated 300,000 deaths. The army held Mi-24, Mi-8, Gazelle and Alouette III helicopters at some point, but no source checked describes their use, and no air operation is claimed here. Burundi’s deployments to Somalia and eastern Congo were of ground troops, and no source checked attributes air operations to Burundian aircraft; the June 2025 Bell 412 incident in Somalia is given as al-Shabaab claimed it and as AUSSOM described it. Where a consolidated sortie or loss figure exists in the official record it is given here; where accounts disagree, the range is shown and the disagreement named. Blank cells are blank because no figure could be verified, not because the fighting was small.

Not documented. The army held Mi-24, Mi-8, Gazelle and Alouette III helicopters at some point, but no source checked describes their use in the war. The war was sparked by the coup attempt of October 1993 and lasted, by Wikipedia’s dates, from 21 October 1993 to 15 May 2005. The UN mission in Burundi (ONUB) estimated that 300,000 people died. The Tutsi-dominated army fought Hutu rebel movements including the CNDD-FDD and Palipehutu-FNL. This entry is included because the brief asks for the war and because today’s helicopters may date from it; but the sources checked for this page say nothing about what Burundi’s aircraft did, and no claim about air operations is made here. Outcome Ended by the Arusha process; the National Defence Force was formed from the old army and former rebels. No source checked documents an air role; aircraft types are omitted for that reason. |
