The Story

The delta that carried Britain’s bomb

In 1947 the Air Ministry issued specification B.35/46 for a jet bomber able to carry a 4,500 kg nuclear weapon to a target 2,700 km away, at high subsonic speed and above 50,000 feet. A. V. Roe & Company — Avro — answered with one of the boldest shapes in aviation: a vast, tailless delta wing. The concept was championed within Avro’s design office under chief designer Roy Chadwick, the man behind the wartime Lancaster; after Chadwick was killed in a 1947 crash the programme was carried forward by his successor Stuart Davies, with the delta planform proven first on the little Avro 707 research aircraft.

The prototype Type 698 first flew on 30 August 1952, and the aircraft — named Vulcan — entered RAF service from 1956–57. It became one of the three “V-bombers” — Valiant, Victor and Vulcan — that carried Britain’s airborne nuclear deterrent. Armed first with free-fall atomic bombs and later with the Mach-2.5 Blue Steel stand-off missile, Vulcans stood Quick Reaction Alert around the clock, crews ready to be airborne in minutes.

As Soviet surface-to-air missiles made high-altitude penetration suicidal, the force switched in the mid-1960s to low-level flying beneath enemy radar. Britain handed the strategic deterrent to Royal Navy Polaris submarines in 1969, but the Vulcan flew on — and in 1982 stunned the world with the Black Buck raids of the Falklands War. Retired by the RAF in 1984, one aircraft, XH558, was restored to fly again as a civilian display aircraft until 2015, keeping the delta’s unmistakable howl alive for a generation that never knew the Cold War.

01How the Avro Vulcan’s giant delta wing was born — from the Lancaster to the atom bomb

The delta wing was a leap into the unknown. To carry a bulky early nuclear weapon fast and high, Avro’s team gambled on an all-wing triangle with no tailplane — a shape that offered enormous internal volume, a big fuel and bomb load, and a high service ceiling, but whose handling nobody yet understood. Rather than risk the full-size bomber, Avro built a family of scaled research gliders and jets, the Avro 707 series, to explore the delta’s low-speed and high-speed behaviour.

The production Vulcan refined the pure triangle with a kinked, cambered leading edge to tame buffet at height, and grew from the B.1 into the far more capable B.2, with a bigger wing, more powerful Olympus engines and a formidable electronic-warfare suite. The result was a bomber that looked like nothing else in the sky — and, thanks to that wing, could be flown with a lightness that astonished everyone who saw it displayed.

A pioneering delta wing on four Olympus engines

The Vulcan’s defining feature is its enormous delta wing — about 34 m from tip to tip — buried in which sat four Rolls-Royce (originally Bristol) Olympus turbojets, two per side. The wing gave huge lift, vast internal volume for fuel and weapons, and a ceiling above 55,000 ft. The same Olympus engine line, much developed, later powered Concorde. It was one of the first large delta aircraft in the world to enter service.

Britain’s nuclear deterrent — and Blue Steel

As a V-bomber the Vulcan carried Britain’s strategic nuclear deterrent: first free-fall bombs such as Yellow Sun, then from the early 1960s the rocket-powered Blue Steel stand-off missile, which could be launched around 100 nautical miles from a defended target and flew at roughly Mach 2.5. Crews stood Quick Reaction Alert, ready to scramble in minutes — the sharp end of Britain’s Cold War.

Fighter-like agility — and the “Vulcan howl”

For a 90-tonne bomber the Vulcan was astonishingly nimble; test pilot Roly Falk famously rolled a prototype at Farnborough in 1955. And at high power the delta’s intakes produced a spine-tingling howl — a resonance created as a huge mass of air is drawn through the intake geometry, unique to the B.2 airframe and unforgettable to anyone who heard it at an air show.

02What causes the Avro Vulcan’s famous “howl”?

The howl is a product of the Vulcan’s intake design working at high power. At roughly 87–95% engine power, the B.2 draws around 100 kg of air per second through each intake — a square opening that narrows to an oval and then a round duct feeding the engine. That progressive constriction sets up a resonance, much like blowing across the neck of a bottle, and produces the distinctive rising howl. It is specific to the later 200-series airframe; the earlier B.1 did not sing the same way. For enthusiasts it became the single most beloved sound in British aviation.

03Why the Vulcan switched from high level to hugging the ground

The Vulcan was conceived as a high-altitude bomber, cruising above 50,000 ft where 1950s fighters and guns could not reach. That sanctuary vanished on 1 May 1960, when a Soviet SA-2 missile downed Gary Powers’ U-2 at high altitude. Suddenly height was a death sentence, not a shield. From the mid-1960s the V-force retrained for low-level penetration, threading below Soviet radar at a few hundred feet — a punishing regime that stressed the airframes and their crews far more than the high-level role they were designed for, and which changed the Vulcan’s paint from anti-flash white to disruptive camouflage.

Delta wing
Tailless delta, kinked leading edge A large-area tailless delta — the defining feature of the aeroplane. The deep, thick wing root gave enormous internal volume for fuel and a weapons bay some 9 m long while keeping wing loading low, which is what bought the Vulcan its high-altitude cruise and its famous agility for a bomber. Early flight testing found compressibility buffet at high Mach and altitude on the original straight leading edge; the fix was the kinked, extended leading edge (the Phase 2 wing) retrofitted to the B.1 and built into the B.2, which also grew the span to 33.83 m.

Crew escape
Two ejection seats, five crew Only the two pilots had ejection seats (Martin-Baker Mk.3, later Mk.3KS). The three rear crew — both navigators and the air electronics officer — sat facing aft on swivel seats and had to unstrap, turn and bail out manually through the crew entrance door. At altitude that was survivable; at the low levels the V-force flew from the mid-1960s onward it was effectively impossible, and the crews knew it. The arrangement was criticised throughout the type's life, and rear crew died in accidents from which the two pilots got out. Ejection seats or a jettisonable crew capsule for the rear crew were studied and rejected on cost, weight and disruption.

04What did an Avro Vulcan cost — and what does one cost to fly today?

The Vulcan was a state-funded Cold-War programme, never sold on an open market, so a clean modern flyaway price does not exist; period figures put each B.2 very roughly in the region of £750,000–£1 million in late-1950s money — an order-of-magnitude guide, not an audited number. The more revealing modern figures come from XH558: the Vulcan to the Sky Trust spent about £6.5 million returning it to flight by 2007, and keeping a single four-engined 1960s bomber airworthy cost on the order of £2 million a year — funded largely by public donations. When the specialist engineering support could no longer be guaranteed, no amount of money could keep it flying, and it was grounded in 2015.


Armament & payload

Avro Vulcan armament: a megaton bomb, a stand-off missile and twenty-one 1,000-pounders

For thirteen years the Vulcan was the sharp end of Britain's nuclear deterrent: a single megaton-class bomb in a cavernous bay, cruising above 45,000 ft in anti-flash white. When the U-2 shot down over Sverdlovsk on 1 May 1960 proved that altitude was no longer sanctuary, the whole V-force was pushed down to 250–500 ft and repainted in camouflage. The deterrent passed to the Royal Navy's Polaris submarines on 30 June 1969, and the Vulcan spent its last fifteen years as a conventional bomber — which is how, in 1982, it came to fly what were then among the longest-range bombing missions ever attempted.

Nuclear weapons

The reason the aircraft existed. Blue Danube, Britain's first operational atomic bomb (a plutonium implosion weapon of roughly 10–12 kt), gave way to the interim Violet Club, the compact Red Beard fission bomb, and then the megaton-class thermonuclear Yellow Sun Mk.1 and Mk.2 — the Mk.2 carrying the Red Snow warhead of about 1.1 Mt. From the mid-1960s the low-level force carried the WE.177B, a parachute-retarded laydown weapon of around 450 kt that let a bomber escape its own burst. No Vulcan ever released a nuclear weapon in anger.

Blue Steel stand-off missile

Avro Blue Steel was the answer to increasingly capable Soviet surface-to-air missiles: a rocket-powered stand-off weapon with a Stentor liquid-fuel motor and a Red Snow warhead of about 1.1 Mt, released of the order of 100–200 km short of the target and carried semi-recessed under the belly of the B.2A. It entered service in 1963 with Nos. 617, 27 and 83 Squadrons at Scampton. Its intended successor, the American Skybolt air-launched ballistic missile, was cancelled by Washington in December 1962; the Nassau Agreement that followed sold Britain Polaris instead, and with it the deterrent role moved from the RAF to the submarine fleet in 1969.

Conventional bombs

The bay took 21 × 1,000 lb bombs in three carriers of seven — about 21,000 lb, an unusually heavy conventional load for its day, and one the RAF had barely practised by the 1970s. On Black Buck 1, on 1 May 1982, XM607 laid the full stick diagonally across the runway at Port Stanley from around 10,000 ft. The result should be stated plainly: one bomb struck the runway, leaving a single crater near the centreline. The strip remained usable by Argentine C-130 transports for the rest of the war, and it had never been long enough for fast jets anyway. The physical damage was slight. The demonstration that British bombers could reach the islands at all was not.

Anti-radar missiles (Black Buck)

For the later sorties the Vulcan was hurriedly given underwing pylons — the wing had been stressed for them in the Skybolt years but they had never been used operationally — carrying two to four American AGM-45 Shrike anti-radiation missiles. Black Buck 5 and 6 hunted the Argentine AN/TPS-43 surveillance radar at Stanley; its operators learned to shut down when threatened, and the clearest success was a Skyguard fire-control radar destroyed on Black Buck 6, killing its crew. Returning from that sortie XM597 broke its refuelling probe and diverted to Rio de Janeiro, where aircraft and crew were held by Brazil for about a week. Of seven planned missions, five were completed.

Electronic warfare

The B.2's bulged tail cone held the standard V-force suite: Red Shrimp and Blue Diver noise jammers, the Green Palm communications jammer, Red Steer tail-warning radar and chaff dispensers, with an ARI 18228 radar warning receiver in the fin-top fairing. Twenty-eight B.1s were rebuilt as B.1As largely to gain the same tail. By 1982 the fit was two decades old, so for the Falklands sorties an AN/ALQ-101 (Dash-10) jamming pod was borrowed from the Buccaneer force and bolted to the new starboard pylon.

Tanker conversion

The Falklands campaign burned through the Victor tanker fleet's remaining fatigue life at an alarming rate, so six Vulcan B.2s were converted at Woodford in a matter of weeks during mid-1982 into K.2 single-point tankers: a hose drum unit in a bulged fairing under the rear fuselage, extra tanks in the bomb bay, and no bombing capability at all. They flew with No. 50 Squadron — the last Vulcan unit — until it disbanded on 31 March 1984. XH558 was one of the six.

Black Buck 1, 1 May 1982
21 × 1,000 lb conventional bombs, a Carousel inertial navigation set taken from an airliner, a Dash-10 ECM pod on a freshly refitted pylon and full internal fuel. Ascension Island to Port Stanley and back: some 12,600 km (~7,800 mi) in about 16 hours, sustained by a cascade of 11 Victor K.2 tankers and roughly 18 separate refuelling brackets — a feat of planning and airmanship considerably more remarkable than the bombing itself.

Fits were strongly mark-dependent. The B.1 and B.1A never carried Blue Steel; only the B.2A was wired and shaped for it. Underwing pylons were stressed for Skybolt in the early 1960s but were not fitted operationally until the improvised conversions of 1982, so no Vulcan carried external stores during the deterrent years. The K.2 tankers carried no weapons at all.

XH558 (civilian display aircraft)
A B.2 that served as a K.2 and then as the RAF's display Vulcan until 1992. Sold into private hands, restored to airworthiness by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust and flown again on 18 October 2007 as a civil-registered display aircraft — not a military machine — until its last flight on 28 October 2015.

The Vulcan is retired and no air force operates the type. Several airframes are preserved statically in the United Kingdom, and two are maintained in taxiable, engine-running condition — XM655 at Wellesbourne Mountford and XL426 at Southend. XH558, restored to flight in 2007 and flown until October 2015, is now grounded: its flying career ended not through any fault with the aircraft but because the technical and engineering support that underwrote its airworthiness was withdrawn, and without that backing no permit to fly could be sustained.

When Argentina seized the Falklands in 1982, the nearest RAF runway was Ascension Island, some 6,400 km from Port Stanley. On the night of 30 April–1 May, Vulcan XM607, captained by Flight Lieutenant Martin Withers, set off on a round trip of roughly 12,900 km, supported by a fleet of Victor tankers in a fiendishly complex refuelling relay. XM607 took on fuel seven times outbound, dropped 21 thousand-pound bombs across Stanley’s runway — scoring one direct hit — and signalled success with the code word “superfuse.” At the time it was the longest-range bombing mission in history.

Ask anyone who saw XH558 display and they will mention the howl before the shape. At high power the B.2’s intakes draw a colossal mass of air through a narrowing duct, setting up a resonance that builds into a raw, tearing howl as the aircraft powers up and climbs away. At the 1955 Farnborough show, chief test pilot Roland “Roly” Falk threw a Vulcan prototype into a roll in full view of the crowds and the press — a manoeuvre no one expected from a strategic bomber the size of a small airliner. After the RAF retired the type, XH558 continued as the RAF’s display Vulcan until 1992, then fell silent. The Vulcan to the Sky Trust refused to let it end there. Backed by a Heritage Lottery grant and a wave of public donations — and roughly £6.5 million of work — engineers returned XH558 to flight on 18 October 2007, the only Vulcan, and one of very few four-engined Cold-War jets anywhere, to fly again in civilian hands.

Keeping a 1960s four-jet bomber airworthy is brutally expensive — on the order of £2 million a year. There was no state money for it. Instead XH558 flew on the generosity of the public: donations, memberships, merchandise and the crowds who filled air shows to see and hear it. It made the aircraft something unusual in aviation preservation — a national icon kept alive, quite literally, by the affection of the people who came to watch it.

By 2015 the companies that underwrote XH558’s engineering could no longer guarantee support for such an old, unique airframe, and its safe flying life was judged to be at its end. After a farewell tour that drew enormous crowds across Britain, XH558 made its final flight on 28 October 2015 from Doncaster Sheffield. No Vulcan has flown since; the aircraft is now preserved in taxiable condition, its howl heard only on the ground.

The Vulcan spent nearly three decades as one of the most feared machines of the Cold War, yet it never released a weapon in the strategic nuclear role it was designed for — the deterrent worked precisely because it was never used. Its only combat missions were the conventional Black Buck raids of 1982, at the very end of its RAF career. That contrast — a doomsday bomber whose sole shots in anger were 21 iron bombs on a distant runway — is the heart of the Vulcan story.

The Vulcan was built to deliver nuclear weapons in a war that, mercifully, never came — so its true “combat record” is a deterrent that was never fired. In nearly 30 years of RAF service its only shots in anger came in a single 1982 campaign: the Black Buck raids of the Falklands War, when Vulcans flew from Ascension Island to attack Port Stanley. Those missions set a range record and are the aircraft’s lasting combat legacy.

Everything people ask about the Avro Vulcan

Can I fly in a Vulcan?
No — there are no public Vulcan flights. The last airworthy Vulcan, XH558, was grounded in 2015 and no Vulcan has flown since; a couple of preserved airframes only perform fast taxi runs on the ground. You can, however, fly in a genuine military jet with MiGFlug — see migflug.com/flights-prices/.
Can a civilian fly the Vulcan?
Not any more. XH558 flew in civilian hands as a display aircraft from 2007 to 2015, kept airworthy by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, but it never carried passengers and is now grounded for good. If you want to actually get airborne in a fast jet, MiGFlug still offers rides in several military types.
What was Operation Black Buck?
A series of seven long-range RAF raids during the 1982 Falklands War, flown by Vulcan bombers from Ascension Island against Argentine positions at Port Stanley. Each round trip was about 12,900 km and needed a large fleet of Victor tanker aircraft; at the time they were the longest-range bombing missions ever flown.
Why does the Vulcan “howl”?
The howl comes from air rushing through the B.2’s intakes at high power — roughly 100 kg of air per second per intake, forced through a duct that narrows from square to oval to round. That sets up a resonance, like blowing across a bottle, producing the famous rising howl. It was an accident of the design, not a deliberate feature.
Was the Vulcan supersonic?
No. Despite its fighter-like handling, the Vulcan was a high-subsonic aircraft, with a top speed around Mach 0.96. Its Blue Steel missile was supersonic (about Mach 2.5), but the bomber itself was not designed to break the sound barrier in level flight.
What nuclear weapons did the Vulcan carry?
Early on, free-fall atomic and hydrogen bombs such as Yellow Sun. From the early 1960s it carried the rocket-powered Blue Steel stand-off missile with a megaton-class warhead, and later WE.177 free-fall weapons in the low-level role. It was one of the three V-bombers that made up Britain’s airborne deterrent.
Why was XH558 grounded in 2015?
Not for lack of money or interest, but engineering.
