The Lockheed Hudson: an airliner sent to war over the sea

The Lockheed Hudson began life not as a warplane but as a sleek American airliner. When Britain needed maritime patrol aircraft faster than its own factories could build them, Lockheed rebuilt a civil transport into a bomber in a matter of months — and in doing so gave the Royal Air Force one of the first major American-built aircraft it would take to war.

In the spring of 1938, with war in Europe looking increasingly likely, a British Purchasing Commission travelled to the United States looking for aircraft that American industry could deliver quickly and in quantity. Britain's own aircraft factories were straining to meet the RAF's needs, and Coastal Command — the neglected "Cinderella Service" tasked with watching the sea approaches to the British Isles — was desperately short of modern, long-range aircraft. Lockheed, then a relatively small company, saw an opportunity. Rather than design a bomber from scratch, its engineers took the Model 14 Super Electra, a fast and modern civil airliner already in production, and rapidly reworked it into a military patrol bomber. The result was the Model 414, which the RAF would name the Hudson.

The transformation was remarkably quick. Lockheed's team, reportedly working around the clock, mocked up a bomber version of the Super Electra — adding a glazed bomb-aimer's nose, a bomb bay, gun positions and, on RAF aircraft, a power-operated dorsal gun turret — and presented it to the British commission. An initial order was placed in 1938, and deliveries began the following year. It was, by the standards of the day, an enormous foreign order, and it mattered for reasons that went well beyond the aircraft itself: it was one of the first large American military aircraft contracts placed by Britain, a significant pre-Lend-Lease purchase that helped tool up United States industry for the vast wartime production effort that would follow. Historians commonly point to the Hudson as an early thread in the industrial partnership that would eventually arm much of the Allied war effort.

Powered by two big radial engines — most marks used the Wright R-1820 Cyclone, though later variants such as the Mk IV and Mk VI switched to the Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp — the Hudson was fast, sturdy and, crucially, available. It carried a crew of around five or six: pilot, co-pilot/navigator, radio operator, and gunners. Its defensive armament typically included a Boulton Paul dorsal turret with two .303-inch machine guns on RAF aircraft, plus fixed nose guns and, on many aircraft, beam and ventral positions. In the bomb bay it could carry bombs or, more importantly for its Coastal Command work, depth charges for attacking submarines.

From 1939 the Hudson became the backbone of RAF Coastal Command's early war effort. It flew endless, gruelling maritime patrols over the North Sea and the Atlantic: convoy escort, anti-submarine sweeps, reconnaissance, and the grim, vital work of watching for German warships and U-boats slipping out into the shipping lanes. It was not glamorous flying — hours of grey sea and grey sky, far from land, in an aircraft that had started life carrying airline passengers — but it was some of the most important work of the war. The Hudson would go on to serve in almost every theatre and in almost every role imaginable: bomber, patrol aircraft, transport, trainer, air-sea rescue platform, and clandestine special-duties aircraft ferrying secret agents into occupied Europe.

01Why the Lockheed Hudson was built from an airliner — and why that was a strength, not a compromise+

Designing a warplane from a civil airliner sounds like a shortcut born of desperation, and in part it was. But the Model 14 Super Electra was an unusually good starting point. It was already a modern, all-metal, twin-engine monoplane with retractable landing gear and a reputation for speed — in 1938 a Super Electra had carried Howard Hughes and his crew around the world in record time, a feat that gave the airframe a certain celebrity. Its speed and range were exactly the qualities Coastal Command needed, and because the type was already in production, Lockheed could deliver in quantity almost immediately.

The airliner heritage did impose limits. The Hudson's fuselage was relatively narrow, its bomb load modest compared with purpose-built medium bombers, and early marks were sometimes criticised as underpowered when heavily loaded. Pilots had to respect its handling on one engine. But for the long-endurance ocean patrol role, the trade was a good one: the Hudson was fast enough to have a chance against enemy aircraft, roomy enough to carry a useful crew and equipment fit, and reliable enough to spend hour after hour over water. The airliner DNA that some saw as a weakness was, in practice, much of the reason the aircraft could be fielded so quickly and used so flexibly.

02The Hudson's place in history: Britain's first big American warplane and the road to Lend-Lease+

The Hudson's real historical weight lies less in any single mission than in what it represented. When Britain ordered it in 1938, the United States was still officially neutral and its aircraft industry was a fraction of the size it would become. Large British (and French) orders for aircraft like the Hudson injected money, urgency and scale into American factories, helping to expand tooling, workforces and production know-how well before the United States entered the war. This early, cash-based purchasing — Britain largely paid for these first aircraft directly, before the Lend-Lease Act of 1941 changed the terms — is often described by historians as a crucial step in transforming American industry into the "Arsenal of Democracy."

The Hudson was among the first American combat aircraft to see large-scale operational service with the RAF, and it helped establish the pattern of Anglo-American aircraft co-operation that would later bring types like the Catalina, the B-24 Liberator, the Mitchell and the Mustang into British and Commonwealth service. In that sense the unassuming Hudson, converted from an airliner, sits near the beginning of one of the most consequential industrial relationships of the twentieth century.

Two radial engines for speed and reach

Most Hudsons were powered by two Wright R-1820 Cyclone nine-cylinder radials of roughly 1,100 horsepower each; later marks used Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp engines. The airliner-derived airframe made the type fast for its class — around 397 km/h (246 mph) for the Mk I — and gave it the range for long ocean patrols, though heavily loaded early marks were sometimes called underpowered.

A power turret and a bay for depth charges

RAF Hudsons carried a Boulton Paul dorsal turret with two .303-inch Browning machine guns, plus fixed forward-firing guns and beam positions — heavy defensive fit for a converted airliner. The internal bay could hold bombs or depth charges, typically up to around 1,400 lb (roughly 640 kg), the anti-submarine weapon that defined its Coastal Command career.

Built to be adapted

The Hudson's roomy, accessible fuselage made it endlessly convertible. The same basic aircraft served as bomber, long-range reconnaissance platform, transport, navigation trainer, air-sea rescue aircraft — famously carrying an airborne lifeboat — and clandestine special-duties machine. Few wartime types were pressed into so many different jobs.

Performance figures for the Hudson vary by mark and source, so they should be treated as approximate. The Mk I is commonly quoted at a maximum speed of around 397 km/h (246 mph) and a range of roughly 3,150 km (about 1,960 miles) on internal fuel, with a service ceiling in the region of 7,600 m (about 25,000 ft). Later marks with Twin Wasp engines offered somewhat different performance and better high-altitude behaviour.

The recurring criticism was that a fully loaded Hudson — bombs or depth charges aboard, tanks full for a long patrol — could feel underpowered, particularly on take-off and single-engine handling. Coastal Command crews learned the aircraft's limits and flew it accordingly. Against that, its speed in the patrol role gave it a fighting chance against the enemy aircraft it might meet over the sea, and its reliability over long distances made it a trusted mount for crews who might be six or seven hours from the nearest friendly coast.

04The Lockheed Hudson's armament and equipment: guns, turret, bombs and the airborne lifeboat+

Defensive armament evolved across the marks and between operators, but a representative RAF Hudson carried two fixed forward-firing .303-inch machine guns for the pilot, a Boulton Paul dorsal turret with two more .303s, and additional beam and ventral guns on many aircraft. This was a notably heavy defensive fit for an aircraft of its size and origin, reflecting the reality that Coastal Command Hudsons often operated alone and might have to fight off marauding fighters or return fire from a surfaced submarine.

Offensively, the Hudson's bomb bay could carry bombs for light bombing work or depth charges for anti-submarine attacks. As the war progressed, Hudsons were fitted with ASV (air-to-surface vessel) radar to find surfaced U-boats and ships at night and in poor visibility, and some carried rockets. One of the aircraft's most humane innovations was the airborne lifeboat: a powered, self-righting boat slung under an air-sea rescue Hudson and parachuted down to ditched aircrew, dramatically improving the chances of survival for men down in the cold sea.

From Super Electra to A-29: how the Lockheed Hudson developed

The Hudson was not a single aeroplane but a family, evolving through British and American marks as engines, armament, radar and roles changed. Here is how the type grew from a converted airliner into a mature patrol bomber.

The line began with the Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra, a fourteen-passenger commercial transport that first flew in 1937. It was advanced for its day — all-metal, twin-engined, with Fowler flaps that gave it good short-field performance — and it was fast. When the British Purchasing Commission came looking in 1938, Lockheed's designers, led by a team working at extraordinary speed, produced the Model 414: a Super Electra with a redesigned nose for a bomb-aimer, an internal bomb bay, provision for guns and, on British aircraft, a dorsal gun turret. The RAF named it Hudson, after the English navigator Henry Hudson, in keeping with its practice of naming American types after historical figures and places.

British marks followed one another as the war demanded. The Hudson Mk I and Mk II used Wright Cyclone engines with two-blade and later three-blade propellers respectively. The Mk III introduced more power and added ventral and beam gun positions. The Mk IV was the first to use the Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp engine, and the Mk V returned to a Twin Wasp with detail improvements, while the Mk VI was a further Twin Wasp variant, many supplied under Lend-Lease. Across these marks the Hudson gained radar, better guns, and equipment for its widening range of roles, though the fundamental airframe changed little — a testament to how sound the original conversion had been.

The RAF's Hudson marks are distinguished chiefly by their engines and equipment, and the details vary between sources, so the following is a general guide rather than a definitive register. The Mk I was the initial production version with Wright R-1820 Cyclone engines and two-blade propellers; the Mk II was broadly similar with three-blade constant-speed propellers. The Mk III added more powerful Cyclones and extra gun positions, becoming one of the most numerous and capable marks. The Mk IV switched to the Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp, an engine that suited high-altitude work; the Mk V was another Twin Wasp variant with detail changes; and the Mk VI, many delivered under Lend-Lease, continued the Twin Wasp line. Reconnaissance, general-purpose, transport and air-sea rescue sub-variants proliferated as the type was adapted, and individual airframes were often modified in service well beyond their nominal mark.

06The Lockheed Hudson in American service: A-28, A-29, AT-18 and PBO+

When the United States entered the war, it took the Hudson into its own forces, sometimes by taking over aircraft from British contracts. The United States Army Air Forces designated the Twin Wasp-powered version the A-28 and the Cyclone-powered version the A-29, using them for coastal patrol, light bombing and training; a number were passed to other Allied air forces. A dedicated gunnery-trainer conversion was designated the AT-18. The United States Navy operated the type as the PBO-1, and it was a PBO of squadron VP-82 that is widely credited with sinking the first German U-boat destroyed by American forces, off Newfoundland in March 1942. The American Hudson thus mirrored the British experience: a quick, available patrol bomber that filled a gap until purpose-built types arrived in quantity.

07The Lockheed Hudson's name: why the RAF called it Hudson+

The Royal Air Force had a long-standing convention of naming its American-supplied aircraft after people and places associated with North America or with exploration and history. Lockheed's earlier Model 10 Electra derivatives and the later Lockheed types followed this pattern, and the Model 414 was named Hudson — a name usually associated with the English navigator and explorer Henry Hudson, after whom Hudson Bay and the Hudson River are also named. The naming underlines the aircraft's transatlantic character: an American machine, given an English name evoking exploration, sent to patrol the very northern seas that Henry Hudson himself had sailed centuries before. Later Lockheed patrol types for the RAF, such as the larger Ventura, continued the Anglo-American naming tradition.

Flying the Lockheed Hudson, and how it compared to its contemporaries

What was the Hudson like to fly, and where did it sit among the maritime aircraft of its day? The answers explain both its early importance and its eventual replacement.

Pilots who converted onto the Hudson from British types often remarked on its airliner manners. The cockpit was relatively roomy and well laid out, the controls were pleasant, and the aircraft was fast and stable — qualities inherited directly from its civil ancestor. It was, by the standards of early-war twin-engined aircraft, a modern and comfortable machine to fly straight and level for hours on patrol. That comfort mattered: crews flew enormously long sorties, and an aeroplane that was tiring or unpleasant to handle would have worn them out before the enemy ever appeared.

The Hudson did, however, demand respect in certain regimes. Heavily loaded — full fuel for a long patrol, bombs or depth charges aboard — it could feel underpowered, particularly on take-off and in single-engine flight. Losing an engine over the sea in a fully loaded Hudson was a serious emergency, and the type had a reputation, like many twins of the era, for being unforgiving if mishandled at low speed. Experienced crews learned its limits and flew within them; the accident record, as with all wartime types flown intensively by rapidly trained crews, was not gentle.

When the Hudson arrived, Coastal Command's mainstay was the Avro Anson — a willing but slow, short-ranged and lightly armed aircraft affectionately known as "Faithful Annie." The Hudson was a substantial step up: faster, longer-ranged, better armed and able to carry a more useful load further out to sea. It effectively replaced the Anson in the front-line general-reconnaissance role while the Anson soldiered on as a trainer and communications aircraft. Against the British-built Bristol Beaufort, the comparison is more nuanced: the Beaufort was a dedicated torpedo bomber with a heavier strike punch, while the Hudson was a more versatile patrol and reconnaissance aircraft. 09The Lockheed Hudson and the Lockheed Ventura: the bigger brother+

As the war went on, Lockheed developed a larger, more powerful patrol bomber from the same design philosophy: the Ventura, derived from the Model 18 Lodestar airliner much as the Hudson had come from the Model 14. The Ventura was heavier, faster and more heavily armed, and it took over many of the Hudson's front-line duties in Coastal Command and elsewhere from around 1942. The relationship between the two is a clear illustration of the Hudson's role as a first step: an interim aircraft, quickly fielded, that proved the concept of the airliner-derived patrol bomber and paved the way for the bigger, purpose-improved types that followed. Lockheed's maritime patrol lineage would continue long after the war with the P-2 Neptune and the P-3 Orion — a family tree whose roots reach back to the Hudson.

A distinctive feature of the RAF Hudson was its power-operated Boulton Paul dorsal turret, mounting two .303-inch Browning machine guns. Power turrets were a British speciality of the period, and fitting one to an American airframe reflected Coastal Command's expectation that its patrol aircraft would often have to defend themselves alone, far from friendly fighters. A lone Hudson over the North Sea might be jumped by German fighters or floatplanes, or come under fire from the flak of a surfaced submarine or a warship it was shadowing; the turret, together with fixed nose guns and beam positions, gave it a fighting chance. Handling

The Hudson is one of the few types built in quantity with both of America's great wartime radials, which was deliberate insurance against a shortage of either.
Engine detail
Wright Cyclone R-1820, 29.9 litres (1,823 cu in), single-row nine-cylinder, single-stage two-speed supercharger The same basic engine that flew the B-17, the Dauntless and the DC-3, in a lower-rated form. Utterly conventional, made in enormous numbers, and repairable by mechanics from Reykjavik to Rabaul with parts that were actually in the supply chain. Half the Hudson's value to the Commonwealth was that it came with an American logistics tail attached.
Propellers
three-blade Hamilton Standard constant-speed, fully feathering Mk I aircraft had spinners; the Mk II introduced a different constant-speed unit and dispensed with them, which is the quickest way to tell early marks apart in photographs.
Fuel
100 octane American practice from the outset, and one more reason the Hudson arrived in RAF service already modern where British types were still being cleared for 87 octane.
Dorsal turret
Boulton Paul Type C hydraulically powered turret with two .303 in Brownings, fitted in Britain after delivery The airframes crossed the Atlantic with a fairing where the turret went, and British turrets were installed on arrival — an early and rather elegant example of the mixed Anglo-American production that Lend-Lease would industrialise. The Type C was a real powered turret with a proper field of fire, and it made the Hudson far better defended than any Blenheim.
Radar
ASV Mk II air-to-surface-vessel radar with Yagi and stub aerials on the nose and wings, fitted from early 1940 Hudsons were among the first aircraft anywhere to carry search radar operationally, and from August 1940 squadrons were assigned specifically to anti-submarine work with it. ASV Mk II would show a surfaced U-boat at some miles but lost it in sea return at about a mile — the blind gap at the end of the attack that the Leigh Light was invented to fill. The Hudson never received the Leigh Light; it closed the gap with flares, and imperfectly.
Bombing and depth-charge equipment

Rocket installation

On 28 May 1943, north-west of Mallorca, a Hudson of No. 608 Squadron sank U-755 with rockets — the first U-boat in the world destroyed by an air-launched rocket.
Airborne lifeboat
Uffa Fox Mark I airborne lifeboat, 9.8 m (32 ft) and 770 kg (1,700 lb), carried semi-recessed under the fuselage from February 1943 Dropped from about 700 ft on six parachutes, self-righting, with two 4 hp motors, mast and sails, and rocket-fired lifelines. No. 279 Squadron pioneered it. It is one of the war's genuinely humane inventions and the Hudson carried it first because it had the belly clearance and the endurance to loiter over a dinghy until help came.
Cameras and survey fit
F.24 camera installations for photographic reconnaissance; the A-29B was a dedicated 24-aircraft photo-survey conversion The same capacity kept seven ex-RAAF Hudsons flying with Adastra Aerial Surveys out of Sydney until 1972, mapping Australia and New Guinea. Nearly thirty years after Kota Bharu, the Hudson was still working.
Undercarriage and systems
hydraulically retracted main gear into the engine nacelles, fixed tailwheel, Fowler flaps, rubber de-icing boots on wing and tail leading edges, cabin heating De-icing boots as standard equipment were close to a luxury by British standards of 1939 and were the difference between flying and not flying on an Iceland or Newfoundland winter patrol.
Trainer conversions
AT-18 gunnery trainer with a Martin power turret, 217 built; AT-18A navigation trainer with the turret deleted, 83 built A reminder of where most Hudsons finished. By 1944 the type had been pushed out of the front line by its own descendant, the Ventura, and spent the rest of the war teaching gunners, navigators and bomb-aimers, towing targets and carrying passengers.
11Lockheed Hudson variants: from the Mk I to the A-28, A-29 and PBO+

The Hudson was produced in a long series of marks and designations. The RAF operated the Mk I through Mk VI, differing chiefly in engines, propellers, armament and equipment: early Cyclone-engined marks gave way to Twin Wasp variants, and radar and improved defensive fits were added over time. When the United States Army Air Forces adopted the type, it received the designations A-28 (Twin Wasp) and A-29 (Cyclone), used for patrol, bombing and training, while a trainer version was designated AT-18. The United States Navy operated the type as the PBO-1, and it was a Navy PBO that scored some of America's earliest U-boat successes after the US entered the war. Exact production totals for each sub-variant vary between sources, so any single figure should be read as approximate.

Unlike modern aircraft, whose cost-per-flight-hour figures are tracked in exhaustive detail, wartime aircraft like the Hudson were not costed in the way a museum audience today might expect. Production ran under emergency contracts and, from 1941, under Lend-Lease, where "cost" was a matter of wartime accounting rather than a simple sticker price. Operating costs — fuel, maintenance man-hours, spares, engine overhauls — were absorbed into the vast, opaque budgets of national air forces at war. For that reason the honest entry for the Hudson's unit cost, cost per flight hour and programme cost is simply "not reliably recorded." What can be said is that the Hudson was valued precisely because it was quick to build and available in quantity at a time when those things mattered more than any ledger.


Armament & payload

The Hudson carried a modest bomb load and a genuinely good turret, and it won its place in history with four depth charges and a machine gun

Judged as a bomber the Hudson is unimpressive: 1,400 lb in a shallow bay under the cabin floor, less than a Fairey Battle carried on one engine. Judged as what it actually was — an armed reconnaissance aeroplane that could stay airborne for eight hours, find something, and then hit it hard enough at the moment of discovery — the fit is well chosen. Two fixed .303 in Brownings in the nose let the pilot suppress a conning-tower gun crew on the run-in. A Boulton Paul Type C powered turret with two more gave it a real defence, which no Blenheim ever had. Four 250 lb depth charges was exactly the load an attack on a surfaced U-boat needed. And the aeroplane was strong: Hudsons shot down Dorniers, a Focke-Wulf Condor and, on one famous occasion over Buna, held off nine Zeros for ten minutes. Fits varied enormously. A 1939 Mk I had four guns and no radar; a 1942 Mk III had eight gun positions counting beam and ventral, ASV aerials and Torpex depth charges; a 1943 Mediterranean Mk V carried rockets; an SOE Mk V carried people. RAAF and RNZAF armourers added guns wherever they could find mountings.

Gun

  • Two fixed .303 in Browning machine guns in the upper decking of the nose, firing forward, aimed by the pilot through a ring sight — light, but enough to make a U-boat gun crew keep their heads down for the eight seconds that mattered
  • Boulton Paul Type C hydraulically powered dorsal turret with two .303 in Brownings, fitted in Britain after delivery. A proper powered turret from the outset, in an aeroplane that had been an airliner two years earlier
  • Mk III onwards added one .303 in gun in a ventral hatch firing down and aft, and two .303 in beam guns in the cabin windows — up to seven guns in all, and a defensive arc with no comfortable approach left in it
  • RAAF and RNZAF aircraft in the Pacific were locally modified with extra hand-held guns, and some carried .50 in weapons in the beam positions where they could be obtained
  • Every gun on a British-standard Hudson was rifle-calibre .303 in. Against a Zero this was thin, and Pilot Officer Warren Cowan's crew survived their fight over Buna on 22 July 1942 through flying, not firepower — Saburo Sakai, one of the nine Japanese pilots involved, remembered the Hudson's handling with open admiration for the rest of his life. The crew were killed later that day; Australia awarded them posthumous Medals for Gallantry in 2023, eighty-one years afterwards.

Air-to-air

  • No guided air-to-air weapon existed anywhere during the Hudson's service life. Its air-to-air record was made with .303 in Brownings and it is far better than a patrol bomber's record has any right to be
  • On 8 October 1939, over Jutland, three Hudsons of No. 224 Squadron from Leuchars shot down a Dornier Do 18 flying boat — the first enemy aircraft destroyed by an RAF aircraft operating from the British Isles, and the first destroyed by an American-built aeroplane in the war
  • On 23 July 1941 a Hudson shot down a Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor off Ireland. The Condor was the convoy-shadower that Coastal Command most wanted dead, and it was a considerably larger and better-armed aircraft than the Hudson that killed it
  • Hudsons flew fighter cover over the Dunkirk beaches in May and June 1940 because there was nothing else to spare — a task the type was never designed for and, remarkably, survived
  • Hudson gunners' claims, like all gunners' claims, should be treated with care; the 8 October 1939 and 23 July 1941 actions are among the well-corroborated ones.

Air-to-surface guided

  • None. No guided air-to-surface weapon was carried, trialled or seriously proposed for any Hudson, in any air force, at any point — the type was withdrawn from the front line from 1944, before Allied guided weapons reached maritime squadrons in numbers
  • Nor was there ever a torpedo Hudson. The bay was too shallow and the aeroplane too light; when Coastal Command wanted a torpedo it used the Beaufort, and the anti-shipping strike role passed to the Beaufighter
  • The Hudson's substitute for precision was the low-level attack pressed home to short range, and the aeroplane's strength and controllability at 100 ft made that survivable more often than it should have been
  • The nearest thing the type ever had to a stand-off weapon was the 3-inch rocket, and it came in 1943 to a handful of Mediterranean squadrons only

Bombs

  • 1,400 lb (635 kg) internal: typically four 250 lb general-purpose bombs, or four 250 lb depth charges, or ten 100 lb anti-submarine bombs
  • The 250 lb Mk VIII depth charge, Torpex-filled and fuzed to detonate at 25 ft, transformed the Hudson from 1941. The 100 lb anti-submarine bomb it replaced was so ineffective that it had wounded more Allied aircraft than U-boats
  • Hudsons are credited with 26 U-boats destroyed, more than any other Lend-Lease type of its size and comparable with far larger aircraft — including U-656 sunk by a US Navy PBO-1 of VP-82 on 1 March 1942, the first German submarine sunk by any American aircraft, and U-701 sunk off Cape Hatteras on 7 July 1942 by an A-29 of the USAAF's 396th Bombardment Squadron
  • In the Pacific the same bay carried anti-shipping loads: No. 1 Squadron RAAF Hudsons bombed the invasion convoy off Kota Bharu at 0118 local on 8 December 1941, hitting the transport Awazisan Maru — the first Allied attack of the Pacific war, more than an hour before the first bomb fell on Pearl Harbor
  • The 26-boat figure comes from the standard U-boat loss databases and counts shared and assisted kills differently from some squadron histories; totals between about 20 and 30 appear in reputable sources depending on how credit is apportioned.

Rockets

  • Eight 3-inch rocket projectiles on underwing rails, fitted to Mediterranean Coastal Command Hudsons from 1943 — a late and limited modification, not a standard fit across the fleet
  • The heads were 25 lb solid armour-piercing shot, not explosive: the round entered the water short of the target, curved, and punched a hole in the pressure hull below the waterline. It was crude, cheap and lethal
  • On 28 May 1943, north-west of Mallorca, Hudson "M" of No. 608 Squadron sank U-755 with rockets — the first submarine anywhere destroyed by an air-launched rocket. The same squadron had damaged her two days earlier. Forty of the forty-nine aboard died; nine were picked up by the Spanish destroyer Velasco
  • No RAAF or RNZAF Hudson is reliably recorded with rockets, and the great majority of Coastal Command Hudsons never carried them at all — by the time rocket rails were common on maritime aircraft the Hudson was being replaced by the Ventura and the Beaufighter

Pods & other stores

  • ASV Mk II search radar with its distinctive Yagi masts along the nose and above the wings — fitted from early 1940 and the single most important thing ever hung on a Hudson
  • The Uffa Fox Mark I airborne lifeboat, 32 ft and 1,700 lb, carried semi-recessed under the fuselage by No. 279 Squadron from February 1943 and dropped on six parachutes to ditched crews in the Western Approaches and Bay of Biscay
  • F.24 cameras for photographic reconnaissance and survey; the A-29B was a purpose-built photo-survey conversion, 24 aircraft
  • Supply containers and panniers for special duties: agents' stores over occupied Europe with No. 161 Squadron from Tempsford and No. 148 Squadron in the Mediterranean, arms to Burma with No. 357 Squadron, and rations and ammunition to Sparrow Force and the 2/2nd Independent Company holding out on Timor through 1942
  • There was never a jettisonable drop tank. Long-range and special-duties Hudsons carried extra fuel in cabin tanks, which meant a crew flying nine hours over the Atlantic or Occupied France sat alongside several hundred gallons of unprotected petrol.

North Atlantic anti-submarine patrol, No. 269 Squadron, Kaldadarnes, Iceland, August 1941
Four 250 lb Mk VIII Torpex depth charges fuzed for 25 ft, ASV Mk II radar, full wing tanks, all guns manned, white anti-submarine camouflage on the undersurfaces and sides. Track out, square search, track home; eight hours and usually nothing. On 27 August 1941 it was not nothing: Squadron Leader James Thompson's Hudson put four charges across U-570 south of Iceland, one detonating within ten yards, and the shaken crew hung out a white sheet. Aircraft cannot capture ships, so Thompson circled the boat until a Catalina relieved him and the trawler Northern Chief arrived at ten that night. U-570 was towed to Iceland, examined from end to end, and commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Graph on 5 October 1941 — the only U-boat to serve in both navies, and an intelligence windfall of the first order.
Anti-shipping strike, No. 1 Squadron RAAF, Kota Bharu, 8 December 1941
Four 250 lb general-purpose bombs, guns loaded, no radar, no escort, taking off in darkness and monsoon rain against a landing fleet already putting troops ashore. The attack went in at 0118 local, and the Hudsons of No. 1 Squadron fired the first Allied shots of the Pacific war — before Pearl Harbor, before Singapore, before anyone in London or Washington knew the war had started. The squadron was effectively destroyed within a fortnight.
Special duties pick-up, No. 161 Squadron, Tempsford, moon period 1944
No bombs. Extra cabin fuel, guns manned, containers in the bay, and up to ten seats. The Lysander could take two or three passengers out of a French field; the Hudson could take ten, which is why whole networks, downed aircrew and senior Resistance figures came home in one. It needed a longer and firmer strip than the Lysander and a pilot who could put a nine-ton twin onto grass marked by four torches at night, on the first attempt, with the engines still warm.

Sourcing caveat: Hudson armament fits are poorly documented because so much was added after delivery — British turrets installed on arrival, beam and ventral guns retrofitted, Australian and New Zealand field modifications, radar and rocket rails fitted by maintenance units. Bomb loads quoted between 1,400 and 2,000 lb in reputable sources describe different overload conditions rather than different aeroplanes. Where a figure could not be corroborated it has been left out rather than rounded into place.


Variants

A British purchasing mission gave Lockheed five days to turn an airliner into a bomber, and in doing so turned a small company into a giant

In April 1938 the British Purchasing Commission came to America looking for a maritime patrol aeroplane to supplement the Avro Anson, which was too short-legged to be useful over the Atlantic. Lockheed was a minor manufacturer of fast civil twins with a few thousand employees and no bomber experience whatever. It had, however, been circulating cutaway drawings of the Model 14 Super Electra adapted as a bomber since late 1937, and when the Commission arrived at Burbank the company threw together a full-scale wooden mock-up of the bomber conversion in a matter of days and put it in front of them. The order signed on 23 June 1938 — 200 aircraft, with 50 more promised if 250 could be delivered before the end of 1939 — was the largest ever placed with an American aircraft manufacturer up to that date. Lockheed sub-contracted to Rohr, expanded its workforce many times over, and delivered the 250th aircraft ahead of the deadline.

It is difficult to overstate what that contract did. It took Lockheed from a specialist civil builder to a major armaments firm in under two years, financed the plant and the workforce that would build the P-38 Lightning, the Ventura, the Constellation and eventually the U-2 and the SR-71, and established the pattern of British money paying for American capacity that Lend-Lease would formalise in March 1941. The politics were awkward. Under the United States Neutrality Acts, belligerent aircraft could not simply be flown across the frontier, so early Hudsons were flown to the Canadian border, landed, and towed across the line on their own wheels by tractors and horse teams before being dismantled, cocooned and shipped to Liverpool. It is one of the more absurd images of the period and it is entirely true.

The aeroplane itself was a straightforward conversion and was better for it. The Model 14 wing, with its Fowler flaps, and the Model 14 fuselage were carried over almost unaltered; a bomb bay went in under the cabin floor, a glazed navigator's nose replaced the airliner's solid one, and a fairing was left in the rear decking for the Boulton Paul turret that would be fitted in Britain. First flight was on 10 December 1938 at Burbank; deliveries began on 15 February 1939; No. 224 Squadron at Leuchars was the first RAF unit to receive it in May 1939, and 78 Hudsons were in service when the war began. The type had been in RAF hands for four months when it made history over Jutland on 8 October 1939.

What followed was one of the broadest service records of any aircraft of the war. Coastal Command flew it on convoy escort, anti-submarine patrol, meteorological reconnaissance and air-sea rescue from Scotland, Cornwall, Iceland and Gibraltar. The RCAF flew it on both Canadian coasts, sinking U-754 off Nova Scotia on 31 July 1942 for Eastern Air Command's first kill. The United States Navy took twenty as the PBO-1 and gave VP-82 the distinction of the first American air kill of a U-boat. The USAAF flew A-29s on antisubmarine patrol off Cape Hatteras and A-28s, AT-18s and AT-18As as trainers and hacks. The RAAF took 247 aircraft and fought the retreat through Malaya, the Netherlands East Indies, Ambon, Timor and New Guinea with them, resupplying Sparrow Force by air through 1942 when nothing else could reach it. The RNZAF flew them from Espiritu Santo and, from 23 November 1942, from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal, No. 3 Squadron becoming the first New Zealand squadron in the front line of the Pacific war. Special duties squadrons landed agents in France with them. Brazil got twenty-seven. And after the war, Australian operators flew them as airliners and survey aircraft into the 1970s.

The Hudson was never a great aeroplane and its crews knew it. It was demanding to fly, thinly armed by 1942 standards, and it carried a small bomb load. What it had was range, reliability, a strong airframe, a roomy cabin, American engines with an American supply chain behind them, and the priceless quality of being available in 1939 when Britain had almost nothing else that could patrol the Atlantic. Coastal Command crews called it the Old Boomerang because it always came back. Lockheed replaced it with the Ventura, a bigger and heavier development of the same idea, and by 1944 the Hudson had left the front line for training, transport and survey work. Roughly 2,940 were built.

Model 14 Super Electra (1937–39, 114 built by Lockheed)
The parent airliner: first flight 29 July 1937, fourteen passengers, Fowler flaps, twin fins, a genuine competitor to the DC-2. Howard Hughes flew one round the world in July 1938 in under four days, and Neville Chamberlain came back from Munich in another. Licence-built in Japan by Tachikawa as the Type LO (119) and by Kawasaki as the Ki-56 (121) — so RAAF Hudsons and Japanese Ki-56s over the Indies in 1942 were cousins.
Hudson Mk I (1939–40, 351 to the RAF, 50 to the RAAF)
Lockheed Model 414: Wright GR-1820-G102A Cyclones of 1,100 hp with spinners, two fixed nose Brownings, Boulton Paul Type C turret with two more, 1,400 lb bay. The mark that made the Do 18 claim of 8 October 1939 and flew cover over Dunkirk.
Hudson Mk II (1940, 20 to the RAF, 50 to the RAAF)
Mk I with different constant-speed propellers and no spinners, and minor structural strengthening. A small batch, easily confused with the Mk I in photographs except for the propeller hubs.
Hudson Mk III (1940–42, 428 built)
The definitive Cyclone mark and the one that did most of the fighting: 1,200 hp R-1820-G205A engines, a ventral gun position and two beam guns, ASV Mk II radar, provision for depth charges. Flown by Coastal Command, the RCAF, the RAAF and the RNZAF, and the mark that captured U-570.
Hudson Mk IIIA (1941–42, 800 delivered; USAAF A-29 and A-29A)
The Lend-Lease Mk III, taken from USAAF A-29 and A-29A contracts, many with convertible interiors for troop or freight carriage. Twenty went to the US Navy as the PBO-1 for Patrol Squadron VP-82. The RAF Museum's aircraft and several New Zealand survivors are of this mark.
Hudson Mk IV and Mk IVA (1941–42, 30 and 52, most to the RAAF; A-28)
The first Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp Hudsons, ordered largely as insurance against a Cyclone shortage, and delivered overwhelmingly to Australia. The Mk IVA corresponds to the USAAF A-28 with R-1830-45 engines of 1,050 hp. Two of the three Australian survivors are Mk IVs.
Hudson Mk V (1941–42, 309 built)
Twin Wasps of 1,200 hp with the full Mk III equipment fit. The mark that carried rockets in the Mediterranean with No. 608 Squadron and that, with the Mk III, flew special duties from Tempsford with No. 161 Squadron from October 1943 to June 1945.
Hudson Mk VI (1942–43, 450 delivered; USAAF A-28A)
The Lend-Lease Twin Wasp equivalent of the Mk IIIA, with convertible interiors, supplied to the RAF and Commonwealth air forces and increasingly used as a transport. Twenty-seven A-28As went to the Brazilian Air Force for Atlantic patrol.
A-29, A-29A and A-29B (1941–43, 418, 384 and 24 built)
United States Army Air Forces bombers with Wright R-1820-87 engines. The A-29 flew antisubmarine patrol off the American east coast and sank U-701 on 7 July 1942; the A-29A had the convertible interior; the A-29B was a photo-survey conversion of twenty-four airframes.
AT-18 and AT-18A (1942–43, 217 and 83 built)
The end of the line: a gunnery trainer with a Martin power turret and a navigation trainer with the turret deleted. Together with the proposed C-63 transport, which was cancelled, they mark the point at which the Hudson stopped being a combat aeroplane and became a schoolroom.

Survivors, precisely. Of roughly 2,940 built, about a dozen airframes remain and all are original aircraft — there are no Hudson reproductions. Exactly one flies: Hudson Mk IV A16-112, operated at Temora, New South Wales and painted as Mk III A16-211 "The Tojo Busters"; the Temora collection passed to the Australian War Memorial in 2019. Australia also holds Mk IV A16-105, restored and in Australian War Memorial custody at the Treloar Technology Centre in Canberra, and Mk IVA A16-122 in store with the RAAF Museum at Point Cook. The Royal Air Force Museum at Hendon displays Mk IIIA A16-199 in the markings of No. 13 Squadron RAAF. Canada has Mk IIIA BW769 at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum in Gander, Newfoundland, and Mk VI FK466 under restoration at the National Air Force Museum of Canada at Trenton, Ontario. New Zealand has the largest group: Mk III NZ2013 at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand at Wigram, Mk III NZ2031 at the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland, Mk III NZ2035 under restoration with the Ferrymead Aeronautical Society at Christchurch, Mk IIIA NZ2049 at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, Mk IIIA NZ2084 in a private collection at Christchurch, and a further fuselage under restoration near Ardmore. Additional airframes are reported in the United States and Brazil but could not be corroborated here and are therefore omitted rather than listed on trust. Restoration status and ownership of the New Zealand aircraft in particular change from year to year; check before travelling.

1938An airliner becomes a bomber

A British Purchasing Commission visits the United States seeking aircraft. Lockheed reworks its Model 14 Super Electra airliner into a patrol bomber, the Model 414; Britain places a large order and names it the Hudson.

1939First deliveries and first blood

Deliveries to the RAF begin, equipping Coastal Command squadrons. On 8 October 1939 a Hudson is credited with helping destroy a German flying boat over the North Sea — often cited as one of the first RAF air victories of the war and, some say, the first by an American-built aircraft.

1940The Altmark and the fall of Europe

In February a Hudson locates the German ship Altmark off Norway, carrying British merchant-navy prisoners, triggering the Altmark Incident. Through 1940 Hudsons fly relentless patrols as the war at sea intensifies.

1941A U-boat surrenders to an aircraft

On 27 August a Hudson of No. 269 Squadron attacks and forces the surrender of the submarine U-570 south of Iceland — famously the only occasion a U-boat effectively surrendered to an aircraft. It is later commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Graph.

1941–42Into American and Pacific service

No single front defined the Hudson. It fought the U-boats of the North Atlantic, hunted warships off Norway, defended the sea approaches to three continents, and made a last stand against Japan over the islands of the South-West Pacific. This is how the type's war unfolded, theatre by theatre.

When the first Hudsons reached RAF Coastal Command in 1939, the Command was, in the words of many historians, the poor relation of the Royal Air Force — under-equipped, under-appreciated, and facing a task of enormous strategic importance. Britain lived or died by the sea. If the U-boats and surface raiders could sever the Atlantic convoy routes, the country would be starved of food, fuel and the weapons of war. The Hudson, arriving in numbers just as the shooting started, gave Coastal Command something it had badly lacked: a modern, fast, long-ranged aircraft that could actually reach out over the water and stay there. For the first two years of the war it was, more than any other single type, the backbone of Britain's maritime air effort.

The pattern of that effort was set early. Hudsons flew reconnaissance sweeps across the North Sea, watching the exits from German and Norwegian waters through which raiders and submarines had to pass. They escorted convoys, orbiting for hours over the merchant ships as a visible deterrent — a U-boat that saw an aircraft overhead had to dive, and a submerged U-boat was slow, half-blind and unable to shadow a convoy effectively. They attacked when they could, with bombs early on and, increasingly, with purpose-built depth charges that were far more effective against submarines. And they reported: the sightings, the weather, the movements of enemy ships that let the Admiralty and the rest of Coastal Command respond. Much of this work never made the headlines, but it was the daily substance of the Battle of the Atlantic.

As the war widened, so did the Hudson's map. In the Mediterranean and over the Western Desert, Hudsons of the RAF and the South African Air Force flew maritime reconnaissance and anti-shipping strikes against Axis convoys supplying the armies in North Africa. In the Bay of Bengal and over the Indian Ocean, Hudsons watched for Japanese raiders. But it was in the South-West Pacific that the type fought its most desperate battles, in the hands of the air forces of Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands East Indies. There, in the catastrophic opening months of the Pacific war, outnumbered Hudson crews threw themselves against the Japanese tide over Malaya, Singapore, Timor and New Guinea, often flying to near-certain destruction to slow an enemy who could not be stopped. The Hudson's story is therefore not one story but many, linked by a single, adaptable airframe.

The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous campaign of the Second World War, and the Hudson was in it from the first day to the last. Its contribution came in two forms. The first, and least visible, was deterrence and reporting: simply by being over a convoy, a Hudson forced any nearby U-boat to submerge, robbing it of the speed and vision it needed to attack. The second was direct attack. Early bombs were poor anti-submarine weapons — many bounced off the water or failed to explode at the right depth — but the introduction of properly fused depth charges, dropped in a shallow straddle across a diving submarine, gave Hudsons a real killing capability.

The critical problem was the "mid-Atlantic gap," the stretch of ocean beyond the range of shore-based aircraft where U-boats could hunt convoys without fear of air attack. Shorter-ranged types like the Hudson could not close that gap alone — that would take very-long-range aircraft such as the Liberator — but around the coasts, in the Western Approaches, off Iceland and along the convoy routes within reach of land, the Hudson was a constant, wearing presence that made the U-boats' work harder, slower and more dangerous. It is impossible to separate the Hudson's account from the wider Allied air effort, but the type was unquestionably one of the workhorses that helped turn the Atlantic battle.

For most of the first years of the war, an aircraft could only attack what its crew could see — and a U-boat on the surface at night, or in the frequent murk of the northern seas, was effectively invisible. The answer was airborne radar. Hudsons were among the aircraft fitted with early ASV (air-to-surface vessel) radar, which could detect the metal hull of a surfaced submarine at a distance, day or night, in clear weather or foul. The tactical effect was profound: U-boats had relied on surfacing at night to recharge batteries and move at speed, believing the darkness kept them safe. Radar-equipped patrol aircraft took that safety away.

The technology was crude by later standards, its picture cluttered and hard to read, and it set off a long technical duel as the Germans fielded radar detectors and the Allies changed frequencies. But the principle — that an aircraft could find and attack a submarine it could not see with the naked eye — changed the war at sea, and the Hudson was one of the types that helped prove it in service. Combined with the searchlight-equipped aircraft that could illuminate a target in the final seconds of an attack, radar turned the night from the U-boat's ally into its enemy.

When Japan struck in December 1941, the Hudson squadrons of the Royal Australian Air Force and their Dutch and British allies were among the first into action — and among the first to suffer. RAAF Hudsons attacked the Japanese invasion convoys approaching Malaya, pressing home their strikes against overwhelming fighter and anti-aircraft opposition. Over the following weeks and months, as Singapore fell and the Japanese swept south through the Netherlands East Indies, Hudson crews flew reconnaissance and strike missions against odds that grew steadily more hopeless. Losses were severe; whole squadrons were worn down. Some aircraft and crews escaped to Australia to continue the fight over New Guinea and the Timor Sea.

The Pacific Hudson story includes acts of extraordinary courage. Crews attacked warships and airfields knowing their chances of return were slim, and some individual actions became legendary within the RAAF. The Hudson that found the Altmark

How a patrol aircraft helped free 299 British prisoners

In February 1940 the German tanker Altmark was making for home along the Norwegian coast, hidden in neutral waters and carrying nearly 300 British merchant seamen — prisoners taken from ships sunk by the raider Graf Spee. Finding her was the problem. RAF Coastal Command Hudsons, flying reconnaissance along the Norwegian coast, are widely credited with spotting the Altmark and helping fix her position for the Royal Navy. The destroyer HMS Cossack then cornered the ship in Jøssingfjord and boarded her, and a boarding party's shout of "The Navy's here!" became one of the war's early morale-boosting phrases. Accounts of exactly which aircraft first sighted the ship vary, so the Hudson's precise role is best stated carefully — but the type's part in the search is well established, and the episode showed how a patrol aircraft's eyes could change events at sea.

The rescue caused a diplomatic storm, since HMS Cossack had entered Norwegian territorial waters to free the prisoners, and it is sometimes cited among the events that pushed Norway toward the wider war that engulfed it weeks later. It is one of the strangest episodes of the war at sea. On 27 August 1941, south of Iceland, a Hudson of No. 269 Squadron caught the newly commissioned submarine U-570 on the surface. The Hudson attacked with depth charges, and the shaken, inexperienced crew — believing themselves trapped and unable to dive safely — displayed a white flag of surrender. The Hudson circled, calling in support, until surface ships could reach the scene and take the submarine in tow. It is famously remembered as the only occasion on which a U-boat effectively surrendered to an aircraft. The captured boat was taken into Royal Navy service and commissioned as HMS Graph, where Allied engineers studied her secrets. The details are dramatic enough that they are worth stating plainly and sourcing carefully, but the core of the story is firmly documented.

The capture had lasting value beyond the propaganda coup. As HMS Graph, the former U-570 was studied in detail by the Royal Navy, yielding intelligence on German submarine design and even being sent on operational patrols against her former comrades — a rare instance of a captured enemy warship turned against its builders.

Barely a month into the war, on 8 October 1939, a Hudson operating over the North Sea was involved in the destruction of a German Dornier Do 18 flying boat. Howard Hughes, the Super Electra, and the Hudson's civilian roots

The Hudson's ancestor was a celebrity in its own right. In July 1938 the millionaire aviator Howard Hughes and a crew of four flew a Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra around the Northern Hemisphere in a little over three and a half days, shattering the record for a round-the-world flight and turning the sleek twin into front-page news. That same airliner design — fast, modern and already in production — was the basis for the Hudson. There is a neat irony in it: an aircraft built to carry passengers in comfort and to set peacetime speed records was, within months, cutting bomb bays and gun turrets into its fuselage and heading out over the North Sea to hunt submarines. The Hudson never entirely lost its airliner manners, and pilots often remarked on how civilised it felt compared with purpose-built bombers.

Hughes and his crew circled the Northern Hemisphere in a little over three and a half days in July 1938, and the record cemented the Super Electra's reputation for speed just as the British were choosing it as the basis for a bomber. The Hudson never entirely shed that airliner poise, which is partly why crews found it so pleasant to fly on long patrols.

When the United States entered the war, the Hudson was already in American service — the US Navy flew it as the PBO-1. On 1 March 1942, off Newfoundland, a PBO-1 of squadron VP-82, reportedly flown by Ensign William Tepuni, attacked and sank the submarine U-656. It is widely cited as the first German U-boat sunk by United States forces in the war, and an early demonstration that the same converted airliner giving the RAF such service could serve American crews just as well. As with several Hudson "firsts," the precise wording — first by US aircraft, first US kill of a U-boat — should be stated carefully, but the sinking itself is well documented and marks the Hudson's place at the start of America's own Battle of the Atlantic.

Of the roughly 2,900 Hudsons built, only a small number survive, scattered across a handful of countries. The largest concentration of surviving Hudsons is in Australia, fittingly for a nation whose air force flew the type so hard in the Pacific. Aircraft and substantial remains are preserved by Australian aviation museums and heritage groups, and the RAAF's own museum holdings and associated collections have long included Hudson material. Some Australian survivors have been the subject of long-running restoration projects, occasionally reaching taxiing condition; airworthy status, where claimed, should always be verified as it can change.

In New Zealand, where the RNZAF was a major operator, Hudson survivors and restoration projects are cared for by the country's active warbird and aviation-heritage community — the same community whose film-makers have documented the type on the ground and, occasionally, in motion. 17Why so few Lockheed Hudsons survive: attrition, obsolescence and scrap+

The scarcity of Hudson survivors has several causes. Wartime attrition was heavy: as a front-line patrol and strike aircraft flying long over-water sorties and desperate Pacific missions, the Hudson suffered significant combat and operational losses. Those that survived the war were, by 1945, thoroughly obsolete — outclassed by purpose-built patrol aircraft and worn out by hard use. Like most wartime types produced in their thousands, the vast majority were simply scrapped in the late 1940s, their aluminium far more valuable as raw metal than as museum pieces at a time when few thought to preserve them.

The Hudson also lacked the post-war civilian afterlife that saved some transports and trainers, and it never acquired the glamour that led enthusiasts to rescue fighters like the Spitfire or Mustang in large numbers. Lockheed developed the Hudson rapidly from its Model 14 Super Electra, a modern civil airliner already in production — the same design that Howard Hughes flew around the world in record time in 1938.
