SNCAC: the company and the aircraft that made its name

Nationalised by the Popular Front

In 1936 France was falling behind a rearming Germany, and the new Popular Front government decided to nationalise two-thirds of the aircraft industry. The law of 11 August 1936 grouped private firms into six state companies by region. SNCAC, the company of the Centre, took the Farman works at Boulogne-Billancourt and the Hanriot factories at Bourges and Arcueil, with the state holding two-thirds of the shares. Farman’s big four-engined F.223 became the SNCAC NC.223.

The Jules Verne over Berlin

One NC.223.4 had begun life as the mail plane Jules Verne. Requisitioned by French Naval Aviation, it made history on the night of 7 June 1940 as the first Allied bomber to raid Berlin, dropping eight 250 kg and eighty 10 kg bombs on the German capital in what was largely a psychological operation. It went back three days later. Eight NC.223.3 bombers flew night raids on Germany before France fell.

German aircraft with French badges

Occupation brought odd work. The Germans ordered 455 Siebel Si 204 transports from Bourges and got 168 before liberation; France kept building them as the NC.701 and NC.702 Martinet, about 350 in all. From parts abandoned in an underground German factory at Cravant, SNCAC assembled 65–70 Focke-Wulf Fw 190s for the French Air Force as the NC.900. The Boulogne-Billancourt plant had been bombed by the Allies in March 1942. Judged too small, SNCAC was liquidated in 1949, its assets shared among SNCAN, SNCASO and SNECMA.
