Hatzerim Airbase: what it was built for and what flies there now
Hatzerim lies on the northern edge of the Negev, about 6 km west of Beersheba. It was the first Israeli Air Force base built from scratch rather than on a British airfield: the IAF declared it operational on 3 October 1966, according to the IAF history that Wikipedia cites. The Flight Academy moved here from Tel Nof, and the IDF still names Hatzerim as the home of its Flight School, whose three-year pilot course it calls the longest in the IDF. Every Israeli military pilot of the past half-century has trained here.
Next to the base, outside its fence, is the Israeli Air Force Museum, which displays more than 150 aircraft, among them Spitfires, Kfirs, F-15s and aircraft captured from Syria, Egypt and Jordan. Its most famous exhibit is the Iraqi MiG-21 that Captain Munir Redfa flew to Israel on 16 August 1966 in a Mossad operation; after testing in Israel and the United States it came to Hatzerim, Ynet reported.
The base has also flown strike aircraft. Wikipedia, citing the IAF, says F-15Is of 69 Squadron took part in the 2007 destruction of the Al Kibar site in Syria, which Israel acknowledged in March 2018. In line with operational security, this page does not list the current fighter units at Hatzerim; it names only the Flight Academy, which the IDF itself places here. The coordinates and runway data come from Wikipedia, not from the Israeli AIP.

What Hatzerim Airbase is known for
Where Israeli pilots are made
The IDF’s Flight School is at Hatzerim, and its pilot course is the longest course in the IDF.
Three years, by the IDF’s own description.
The first base built from scratch
Every earlier Israeli air base was a former RAF field; Hatzerim was planned and built by Israel.
Declared operational on 3 October 1966, per the IAF history cited by Wikipedia.
The Israeli Air Force Museum
A large open-air museum stands beside the base, outside its security fence.
More than 150 aircraft on show, according to Tourist Israel.
The defector’s MiG-21
The Iraqi MiG-21 flown to Israel by Munir Redfa in 1966 ended up in the museum here.
Landed at Hatzor on 16 August 1966; lent to the US Air Force for testing a month later (Ynet).
Al Kibar, 2007
Wikipedia, citing the IAF, says Hatzerim’s F-15Is helped destroy the Syrian site Israel says was a reactor.
Four F-15Is of 69 Squadron with four F-16Is from Ramon on 6 September 2007; acknowledged in March 2018.
הגרסה הארוכה
01A base built for the jet age, 1966לִקְרוֹא
Until the 1960s the Israeli Air Force flew from airfields the British had left behind: Ramat David, Tel Nof, Hatzor and Sde Dov. Hatzerim, on the northern edge of the Negev west of Beersheba, was the first base it planned and built for itself. The IAF’s own history, as cited by Wikipedia, gives 3 October 1966 as the day it was declared operational, eight months before the Six-Day War.
The new base was given three asphalt runways, the longest 2,750 m according to Wikipedia.
02The Flight Academyלִקְרוֹא
After the base opened, the Flight Academy moved here from Tel Nof, Wikipedia says, and it has stayed. The IDF’s Hebrew site names Hatzerim as the home of the Flight School and describes its course as three years long, the longest in the IDF. Cadets who complete it graduate as fighter, helicopter, transport or drone pilots and navigators.
The school’s fleet has been renewed in the past decade. The M-346, known in Israel as the Lavi, replaced the A-4 Skyhawk as the advanced trainer; the Grob G 120 Snunit is used for basic training; and in 2024 the AW119Kx, named Ofer, began replacing the Bell 206 Sayfan for helicopter training. Israel Defense reported the first flight in May 2024 and a formal handover in November 2024, when the air force commander, Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar, spoke at the ceremony.
The Ofer is a single-engine helicopter built by Leonardo in Italy for the first phase of helicopter training. Israel Defense gave its ceiling as 15,000 ft and its cruising speed as 130 knots, and said it carries Israeli-made navigation and communication systems and a head-up display that shows the student flight data in real time, a large step from a trainer designed in the 1970s.
Training has its losses. On 24 November 2020 a Grob G 120 crashed near Kibbutz Mishmar HaNegev, killing an instructor, Maj. (res.) Itay Zayden, 42, and a cadet, Cpl. Lihu Ben-Bassa, 19. The Times of Israel reported that it was the first fatal academy crash since 2008, and that the IDF concluded the aircraft had very probably stalled at low altitude.
03The museum and the MiG that came in from the coldלִקְרוֹא
Beside the base, outside its fence, is the Israeli Air Force Museum. Tourist Israel counts more than 150 aircraft on display, from Spitfires to F-15s and Kfirs, along with aircraft captured from Syria, Egypt and Jordan, the helicopter that carried Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat during the peace negotiations, and a converted Boeing used as a cinema.
The best story belongs to a MiG-21. On 16 August 1966 Captain Munir Redfa of the Iraqi Air Force flew one to Hatzor in Israel. Ynet’s account, published in 2007, describes the defection as the result of a Mossad operation, codenamed Diamond, rather than a spontaneous act. A month later the aircraft was handed to the US Air Force for testing; when it came back, it went to the museum at Hatzerim, where Ynet says it stands to this day. Redfa and his family were resettled in a Western country.
04Al Kibar, 2007לִקְרוֹא
On the night of 5–6 September 2007 Israeli aircraft destroyed a building at Al Kibar in eastern Syria. Israel kept silent for more than ten years; on 21 March 2018 it acknowledged the strike, which the Jerusalem Post reported under the headline "After a decade Israel admits: We bombed Syria nuclear reactor in 2007". Syria has said the site was a non-nuclear military building.
According to Wikipedia, which cites the IAF’s own account of 2018, four F-15I Ra’ams of 69 Squadron from Hatzerim and four F-16I Sufas from Ramon flew the mission, and the aircraft that took part were later given a badge marking it. The IAF account itself could not be retrieved for this page, so the details are Wikipedia’s.

Operation Diamond
Captain Munir Redfa of the Iraqi Air Force landed a MiG-21 at Hatzor, giving the West its first close look at the Soviet fighter. Ynet describes the defection as the result of a Mossad operation that reached Redfa through a Jewish businessman with links to his family. After a month in Israel the MiG went to the US Air Force for testing; on its return it was placed in the IAF Museum at Hatzerim, where it is still displayed.
An engine that changed a fleet
An F-16I Sufa on a combat training flight over the Mediterranean suffered complete engine failure; the pilot and navigator ejected and were rescued. According to Wikipedia, which cites the IAF website, the investigation found a fundamental defect in the engine type, and an improved engine was introduced worldwide as a result. Wikipedia attributes the aircraft to 107 Squadron at Hatzerim.
Flight Academy crash near Mishmar HaNegev
A Grob G 120 Snunit trainer crashed near Kibbutz Mishmar HaNegev, about 15 km north of the base. The instructor, Maj. (res.) Itay Zayden, 42, and the cadet, Cpl. Lihu Ben-Bassa, 19, were killed. The Times of Israel reported that the IDF found a "very high probability" of a low-altitude stall, ruled out technical failure, and that the Snunit fleet was grounded for over a month. It was the academy’s first fatal crash since 2008.
