ブルンジ空軍
Burundi’s air arm is not a separate air force but the aviation command of the National Defence Force — about 200 people and roughly a dozen helicopters, by the IISS and defenceWeb counts — and through the civil war of 1993–2005, the Somalia mission and the deployments to eastern Congo, the public record says almost nothing about what it actually flew.
The Burundian air arm story: an army with a few aircraft, a civil war with no air record and a dozen helicopters
1962–1993: an army with a few aircraft
Burundi became independent from Belgium in 1962, and Wikipedia records that its force was then renamed the Burundian National Army (Armée Nationale Burundaise) and took on a purely military role. No source checked for this page gives a founding date for an air element, names its first aircraft or says who trained its first pilots; the year shown here is that of the national army, not of a separate air arm. The IISS estimated the whole armed forces at 6,000 in 1981–82. Whatever aircraft Burundi held in those decades were light types for liaison and training, and the defenceWeb inventory still lists two Cessna 150L light aircraft and two SIAI-Marchetti SF.260 trainers whose dates of delivery are not published.
1993–2005: the civil war, with the air arm almost invisible
The civil war was sparked by the coup attempt of October 1993, in which President Melchior Ndadaye was killed, and lasted, by Wikipedia’s dates, from 21 October 1993 to 15 May 2005; the UN mission in Burundi estimated the death toll at 300,000. Ndadaye’s successor, Cyprien Ntaryamira, was killed on 6 April 1994 when the aircraft carrying him and Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana was shot down over Kigali — an event outside the Burundian air arm’s story but central to the region’s. The government fought Hutu rebel movements including the CNDD-FDD and Palipehutu-FNL. Mi-24 gunships, Mi-8s, Gazelles and Alouette IIIs appear in today’s inventories, but no source checked for this page documents when they were delivered or how the army used them in the war, and this page makes no claim about it.
2005–2022: one defence force, and troops abroad
The Arusha Accords ended the war, and after the 2005 constitution and elections the old army and former rebel forces were brought together in the National Defence Force (Force de Défense Nationale du Burundi), whose Kirundi name Wikipedia gives as Urwego rw’ukwivuna abansi rw’Uburundi. Within it, Wikipedia says, "naval and aviation commands exist". The IISS put the forces at about 30,000 in 2017. From about 2007 Burundi sent large troop contingents to the African Union Mission in Somalia, but these were ground forces; no source checked shows Burundian military aircraft deployed there.
2022–2025: Somalia and eastern Congo
Burundi has kept troops in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo for years, according to UN officials quoted by Wikipedia, at first against Burundian rebels and more recently against the M23. After the M23 and its political wing, the AFC, took Bukavu in February 2025, Reuters reported on 18 February 2025, citing four sources, that Burundian troops were withdrawing from Congo, and trucks carrying them were seen crossing home. No source checked attributes any air operations in Congo to Burundian aircraft. In Somalia, on 3 June 2025 al-Shabaab claimed to have shot down what Military Africa called a Burundian Bell 412 helicopter of the AU mission AUSSOM, serial AUO-012, in Middle Shabelle; AUSSOM said it made an emergency landing after a technical fault and that everyone on board got out safely.
2026: a dozen helicopters, few of them confirmed flying
The IISS Military Balance 2024 says the army’s air unit operates 12 helicopters. defenceWeb’s profile, updated in November 2025, gives about 200 people and lists two Mi-24s, three Alouette IIIs, two Gazelles and four Mi-8s that it calls non-operational, plus two SF.260s, two Cessna 150Ls and two DC-3s, and warns that the serviceability of much of the military’s aircraft is questionable. That is the honest state of knowledge in 2026: a small helicopter arm inside the army, with no published order of battle, no named commander and no confirmed new purchases, whose real flying strength is unknown.

How the Burundi Air Force is organised
Not a separate service but the aviation command of the Burundi National Defence Force, about 200 people according to defenceWeb, with no published order of battle and no named commander. The IISS Military Balance 2024 credits the army’s air unit with 12 helicopters; defenceWeb lists two Mi-24 gunships, three Alouette IIIs, two Gazelles and four Mi-8s it calls non-operational. Two SF.260 trainers, two Cessna 150Ls and two DC-3s complete defenceWeb’s list, and how many of the aircraft actually fly is not published.
Aviation command, Burundi National Defence Force
Not a separate air force: Wikipedia says only that "naval and aviation commands exist" within the National Defence Force, formed after the 2005 constitution from the old army and former rebel forces. defenceWeb puts the air element at about 200 people; no commander could be confirmed.
Mi-24 gunships and Mi-8s
Two Mi-24s and four Mi-8s that defenceWeb describes as non-operational; the IISS Military Balance 2024 says the army’s air unit operates 12 helicopters. Delivery dates, and any use in the civil war of 1993–2005, are not documented in the sources checked.
Alouette IIIs and Gazelles
Three Alouette IIIs and two SA342L Gazelles, per defenceWeb; their status is not confirmed.
Trainers and transports
Two SF.260 trainers, two Cessna 150Ls and two DC-3s, per defenceWeb, which warns that the serviceability of much of the military’s aircraft is questionable; the DC-3s are not corroborated elsewhere.
