
Gotha G.V — the bomber that darkened London and helped invent the RAF
The Gotha G.V and the Gotha raids: how a slow biplane changed air power forever
For two years the people of London had learned to fear the night sky, but the terror had a shape they thought they understood: the Zeppelin, vast, silver and slow, drifting overhead to drop its bombs. By the summer of 1917 a new sound was coming instead, and it came in daylight. On 13 June 1917 a formation of Gotha bombers droned over the capital in broad daylight and dropped their bombs on the largest city on Earth. It was the deadliest air raid London would suffer in the entire First World War, and it announced that strategic bombing had passed from the airship to the aeroplane.
The aircraft that led that campaign was the Gotha G.V, built by the Gothaer Waggonfabrik, a railway-carriage maker in the Thuringian town of Gotha. It was a big, angular biplane spanning some 23.7 metres, its two Mercedes D.IVa inline engines of about 260 horsepower each mounted between the wings and driving pusher propellers that faced backwards. A crew of three, a pilot with a gunner in the nose and another behind the wings, flew it slowly, at little more than 140 km/h, and defended it with two or three Parabellum machine guns. It was not fast, and it was famously hard to land. Its power lay in reach: from airfields near Ghent in occupied Belgium it could cross the North Sea, strike England and return.
The G.V and its near-identical predecessor the G.IV were flown by Kagohl 3, the unit history remembers as the England Squadron. Their first big daylight raid on London, on 13 June 1917, killed around 160 people and injured more than 400, among them eighteen young children at a school in Poplar. The public outcry was immense. A second daylight raid on 7 July made the point again, and Britain pulled fighter squadrons back from the Western Front to defend the capital. As daylight raids grew too costly the Gothas switched to night attacks, the so-called harvest-moon raids of late 1917.
The material damage was modest by the standards of the war that followed. The consequences were not. The alarm the Gothas caused led directly to the Smuts report, and to the creation of the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918, the world's first independent air force, and to a reorganised home air defence that would become the template for the Battle of Britain a generation later. The Gotha did far more damage to the future than to the present. And the word itself entered the language: to a wartime Londoner, any large German bomber, even the far bigger Zeppelin-Staaken Giants that flew alongside them, was simply a Gotha.
It was also a dangerous aircraft to fly. Nose-heavy and tricky on the approach, the Gotha killed many of its own crews in landing accidents, and losses to weather and mishap rivalled or exceeded those inflicted by British guns and fighters. No complete example survives today. What is left are fragments, relics and a full-scale replica, the physical remains of an aircraft whose real monument is an air force it helped bring into being.

01How the Gotha raids worked: from the Zeppelin to the aeroplane
Germany's strategic bombing of Britain began with the Zeppelins, but by 1917 the great airships were increasingly vulnerable to incendiary ammunition and bad weather. The heavy aeroplane offered a harder target and a more accurate one. The Gotha G-series, maturing through the G.IV and G.V, gave the German command a machine that could carry a useful bomb load across the North Sea and defend itself in a tight formation, where overlapping fields of fire from many gunners made a mass of bombers dangerous to attack. The raids were flown by Kagohl 3, the England Squadron, from airfields around Ghent in occupied Belgium. Early raids were flown in daylight to aid navigation and bombing accuracy; as British defences stiffened, the squadron shifted to moonlit night raids. It was the transition that mattered: the Gotha proved that fixed-wing bombers, not airships, were the future of the long-range attack.
02The Gotha tunnel: engineering a firing channel through the fuselage
The most distinctive feature of the Gotha was defensive. Every large bomber of the period shared a fatal blind spot: an attacker climbing up beneath the tail could not be seen or shot at. The Gotha's designers answered with what British airmen called the Gotha tunnel, a channel arched through the rear fuselage and an opening in the belly that allowed the rear gunner to fire downward and rearward through the aircraft itself, covering the vulnerable underside and tail from below. More than one Allied pilot who slid in under a Gotha expecting a safe firing position was met by fire from the tunnel. It was a simple idea, elegantly executed, and it made the Gotha a markedly tougher opponent than its size and speed suggested.
03Why pushers? The Gotha's engine layout and the price it paid
The Gotha's two Mercedes D.IVa engines were mounted between the wings and drove pusher propellers, facing aft rather than forward. The layout kept the propeller discs clear of the nose gunner's field of fire and helped balance the aircraft around its bomb load. It came at a cost. Pusher installations are draggy, cooling and maintenance are harder, and the engines sat well back, contributing to the aircraft's awkward handling on the ground and in the landing flare. A number of quick reference sources describe the Gotha as a conventional tractor design; that is an error. Contemporary cutaways and the surviving technical record confirm the pusher arrangement, which is one of the aircraft's defining visual signatures.
0413 June 1917: the deadliest raid, and the school in Poplar
The daylight raid of 13 June 1917 was the worst single air attack on London of the war. A formation of Gothas reached the capital unopposed and bombed the densely populated East End and City. Around 160 people were killed and more than 400 injured. Among the dead were eighteen children at the Upper North Street School in Poplar, where a bomb passed through the upper floors and detonated in an infants' classroom. The deaths of the schoolchildren turned public grief into fury and became a rallying point for demands that the government defend the capital and hit back at Germany. Figures for the raids vary between sources and should be treated as close estimates, but the shock of that single morning is not in doubt.
05From the Gotha panic to the Royal Air Force: the Smuts report and 1 April 1918
The political consequences of the raids outran the bombs. With squadrons pulled back from France and the public demanding action, the War Cabinet asked the South African statesman Jan Smuts to review Britain's air organisation. His report of 1917 argued that air power had become a strategic arm in its own right and recommended a unified, independent air service and a coordinated home defence. The result was the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service into the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918, the world's first independent air force, together with the London Air Defence Area that knitted together fighters, guns, searchlights and observers. It is not an exaggeration to say the Gotha raids were a direct catalyst for the birth of the RAF.
06The Gotha G.V's operating costs: why the aircraft cannot be priced today
Unlike a modern jet, the Gotha G.V has no meaningful cost-per-hour figure. Its unit price in 1917 was recorded, if at all, in wartime Reichsmark inside a collapsing war economy, and the numbers that survive are not reliable or comparable to anything today. More to the point, there is no surviving or airworthy Gotha G.V, so there is no fuel bill, no maintenance schedule and no insurance quote to draw on. Any cost-per-flight-hour claim for a Gotha would be invented. We record it honestly on the specification table below: unit cost not reliably recorded, and cost per flight hour not applicable because no example flies. How the Gotha G.V was built to reach London and survive the trip
Two Mercedes D.IVa pushers
Twin six-cylinder inline engines of about 260 hp each, mounted between the wings and turning pusher propellers. They gave the Gotha the range to cross the North Sea and return, at the price of drag, difficult cooling and heavy, awkward handling near the ground.
The Gotha tunnel and its guns
Two, sometimes three, 7.92 mm Parabellum machine guns covered the nose and dorsal positions, while the arched belly tunnel let the rear gunner fire down and back to protect the classic bomber blind spot beneath the tail. It made a slow aircraft genuinely dangerous to intercept.
Reach over speed
A 23.7 m wingspan, a ceiling near 5,500 m and a bomb load in the region of 300 to 500 kg on the long London run. The Gotha traded speed for altitude, endurance and load, flying high and, later, by night to stay beyond the reach of the defences.
Gotha G.V specifications: dimensions, performance, powerplant and cost
Figures below are drawn from standard references on the Gotha G.IV and G.V. Many WWI figures vary between sources and are flagged as estimates; where a value is contested we have hedged rather than pick a false precision.
Baseline note: the figures describe the Gotha G.V as built by Gothaer Waggonfabrik in 1917 and 1918 with two 260 hp Mercedes D.IVa engines, the version that flew the night campaign against Britain. Deltas for the earlier Gotha G.IV, which flew the daylight raids of 1917 and is the aircraft most people mean when they say "Gotha", and for the G.Va and G.Vb with the biplane tail and the shock undercarriage, are in grey. Climb is given as time to a stated height and endurance in place of range, as period practice required, and the maximum speed carries the altitude it was measured at. Figures for German bombers of this period are less firmly established than for fighters, and the spread between authorities is wide enough to be worth reading in the caveat below.

- 2,740 kg (6,041 lb); G.IV 2,413 kg (5,320 lb). Some tables give the G.V as low as 2,400 kg, which almost certainly describes an early or lightly equipped machine.

- Weight growth over the G.IV
- Up to 450 kg (990 lb), from additional equipment and from the use of insufficiently seasoned timber. This is the central fact about the G.V: it was heavier than the aircraft it replaced, its engines could not make their rated power on wartime fuel, and it therefore offered no performance improvement at all over the G.IV. The G.V is a safety modification that cost altitude.

Performance
- Maximum speed at 3,658 m
- 140 km/h (87 mph at 12,000 ft) — the figure most worth quoting because it names its height. A Sopwith Camel did 185 km/h and a Bristol Fighter more; the Gotha was never fast, it was high.
- Operating altitude on raids
- 3,600 to 4,500 m (12,000 to 15,000 ft) typically. In the summer of 1917 that was above the practical ceiling of most British home-defence aircraft, which is the entire military basis of the daylight campaign.
- Time to 3,000 m
- 28 minutes (to 9,840 ft); 21 minutes appears in some tables, probably for a lightly loaded aircraft
- Time to 6,500 m
- 52 minutes 30 seconds (to 21,320 ft), and effectively a paper figure: no operational Gotha with a bomb load climbed to its nominal ceiling
- Service ceiling
- 6,500 m (21,320 ft) on paper; 5,000 m (16,400 ft) is quoted by other authorities and 4,500 m (14,765 ft) by at least one. What is agreed is that the G.V could not operate as high as the G.IV it replaced.
- Endurance
- About 5 hours — against 6 hours for the G.IV. Ghent to London and back is roughly four hours in still air, so the reserve for weather, headwinds and navigation error was thin, and several raids were lost to exactly that.
- Still-air range
- Given as 491 km (305 miles) and as 840 km (522 miles) by different authorities, a difference of seventy per cent that reflects different bomb loads rather than different aeroplanes
- Engine power in practice
- The Mercedes D.IVa could not produce its rated 260 hp on the poor-quality fuel available in 1918. Every figure in this column should be read with that in mind.
- Single-engine handling
- Marginal. Directional control with one engine out was poor enough that the Kastensteuerung biplane tail with twin rudders was designed specifically to fix it, and it did.
- Landing behaviour
- Demanding, and the aircraft's worst characteristic. It was prone to nosing over, which is why the G.Vb was given the Stossfahrgestell, a tandem two-bogie main undercarriage. The modification worked so well it was retrofitted to every G.V in Bogohl 3.
- Loss breakdown
- Bogohl 3 lost 24 Gothas shot down or missing against 36 destroyed or seriously damaged in landing accidents. Three aircraft written off on the ground for every two lost to the enemy. On the earlier G.IV, landing accidents are credited with 75 per cent of operational losses. The Gotha's worst enemy was the Gotha.
- Night operations penalty
- Night raiding gave a measure of protection from fighters and guns and made navigation and landing far harder. Aircraft that survived the target and the return trip were routinely lost putting down on a darkened field in Belgium.

- Engines
- Two 260 hp (194 kW) Mercedes D.IVa six-cylinder water-cooled inline engines, mounted as pushers in nacelles between the wings
- Engine dimensions
- Bore 160 mm (6.30 in), stroke 180 mm (7.09 in), capacity 21.72 l (1,325 cu in), compression 4.94:1
- Rated against measured power
- 260 hp nominal. A British bench test of a captured engine recorded 252 hp (188 kW) at 1,400 rpm. In the field, on 1918 German fuel, the engines fell well short of even that.
- Engine weight
- 499 kg (1,099 lb) each — roughly a quarter of the empty weight of the whole aeroplane in two lumps
- Valve gear
- Shaft-driven single overhead camshaft operating four valves per cylinder, with a half-compression setting for hand starting. For a German engine of 1917 this was advanced; the D.IVa was designed specifically narrow, with the carburettor behind the engine feeding a long tubular intake manifold, which reduced frontal area at the cost of poor fuel distribution between cylinders.
- Propellers
- Two-blade fixed-pitch wooden pusher airscrews. The engines were not synchronised with one another and the resulting beat gave the type its British nickname, the "wong-wongs" — the sound by which Londoners learned to recognise a raid overhead.
- Fuel system
- The reason the G.V exists. On the G.IV the tanks sat in the engine nacelles, where a crash landing could rupture them and spill petrol onto hot engines; with landing accidents causing three quarters of operational losses this was killing crews steadily. The G.V put the tanks inside the fuselage, immediately behind the pilot.
- Consequence of the fuel move
- Those tanks blocked the internal walkway that had let crew members move between the three gun positions in earlier machines, and the bomb bay went with them. From the G.V onward every bomb was carried externally and every crewman was stuck at his own station for the whole flight. A safety fix bought at the price of the aircraft's internal flexibility.
- The Gotha tunnel
- The design feature worth knowing this aircraft for. The underside of the rear fuselage is arched into a large triangular-section trough running from the wing trailing edge aft, connected to an aperture in the upper decking. The rear gunner, standing at his dorsal ring, could fire down through his own fuselage at anything below and behind — the classic blind spot of every large aeroplane, and the one from which British fighters were trained to attack.
- Tail and controls
- G.V: conventional single fin and rudder with a monoplane tailplane. G.Va: the Kastensteuerung compound tail with biplane horizontal stabilisers and twin rudders, plus an auxiliary nose wheel. Some G.Vb aircraft carried Flettner servo tabs on the ailerons to reduce control forces on an aeroplane that was heavy to fly for hours at a time.
- Gun synchronisation gear
- None fitted, and none needed. Every gun on a Gotha is a free gun on a ring mount, fired by a gunner and pointing away from the propeller discs, which sit behind the crew rather than in front of them. The German mechanical gears of the period — the Fokker Stangensteuerung and the later Zentralsteuerung — belong to single-seat fighters, and the pusher layout is precisely the configuration that makes them unnecessary. It is worth saying plainly rather than leaving the row blank.
Armament & payload
The Gotha carried about half a tonne of bombs, and changed British defence policy for a century
Two or three 7.92 mm Parabellum MG14 machine guns on ring mounts and a bomb load of 300 to 500 kg is the whole armament of a Gotha G.V. By the standards of 1943 that is nothing: a single Lancaster carried twelve times the bombs. By the standards of 1917 it was still not very much, and the total tonnage the Englandgeschwader dropped on Britain across two years of effort would not fill one night's work by Bomber Command.
The tonnage is not the point and never was. What the Gotha delivered was proof that an aeroplane could reach the enemy's capital in daylight, kill several hundred civilians, and fly home unmolested — and the political consequence of that demonstration was out of all proportion to the explosive. It forced Britain to recall front-line fighter squadrons from France in the middle of a land campaign, to build the first integrated air defence system in history, and finally to take its two air arms away from the Army and the Navy and constitute them as an independent service. The Royal Air Force exists because of this aeroplane. Fits varied: the third gun was frequently omitted for weight, a fourth on a post between the pilot's and bomb-aimer's cockpits was provided for and rarely carried, and bomb loads on the London run were smaller than on nearer targets because of the fuel required.
Defensive guns
- Two or three 7.92 mm (.312 in) Parabellum MG14 machine guns on ring mounts — a lightened, air-cooled derivative of the Maxim developed specifically as an aircraft observer's weapon, belt-fed from a drum casing and firing at around 700 rounds per minute.
- One in the nose position, worked by the aircraft commander, who was also the bomb-aimer and navigator. One in the dorsal position aft of the wings, worked by the rear gunner.
- A third gun could be mounted in a ventral position firing down and back. On the later aircraft the tunnel was enlarged precisely so that this separate gun could be deleted and its weight saved.
- Provision existed for a fourth gun on a post between the pilot's and the bomb-aimer's cockpits. It was rarely carried, because on an aeroplane this marginal every kilogram came off the ceiling.
- Concentrated defensive fire from a formation worked. On 13 June 1917 the combined fire of several Gothas drove off British fighters near Ostend, and the whole formation of fourteen came home without a loss from the deadliest air raid of the war.
Mounts, ammunition and fields of fire
- Free guns on rotating ring mounts, hand-aimed. There is no turret, no power assistance and no gunsight beyond a ring and bead; the gunner fought a 150 km/h slipstream at 4,000 m in an open cockpit, in the cold, for hours.
- Ammunition was carried in belts within drum casings on the mount. Reloading meant changing the drum by hand at altitude, and a gunner who dropped one lost it.
- The nose gun covers ahead and to the sides. The dorsal gun covers above and to the rear. The classic uncovered cone — below and behind, where a fighter can sit in the bomber's own blind spot and shoot upward at the fuel tanks — is what the tunnel was built to close.
- In the G.V the crew could not move between stations at all, because the relocated fuel tanks blocked the internal walkway. A wounded gunner could not be relieved and a jammed gun could not be reached by anybody else.
- Formation flying was the real defence. Gothas flew in a tight diamond or wedge, mutually supporting, and British pilots repeatedly reported being driven off by crossfire rather than by any single gun.
The Gotha tunnel
- Hans Burkhard's answer to a problem found on the earlier G.III: one rear gunner could not effectively work both a dorsal and a ventral position, and shuttling between them in combat was hopeless.
- The solution was to arch the underside of the rear fuselage into a large triangular-section trough running aft from the wing trailing edge, connected to an aperture in the upper decking. The dorsal gun could then be depressed and fired straight through the aircraft's own structure at targets below and behind.
- On the G.V the tunnel was enlarged so that the separate ventral gun could be dispensed with entirely and the rear gunner could stay where he was, covering both hemispheres from one position.
- It worked well enough that the British wrote it up in wartime magazines with some admiration: The Aeroplane ran a piece called "The Gotha Gun Tunnel" in July 1917 and both Popular Mechanics and Popular Science covered it the same autumn.
- It is a genuinely elegant piece of design and it is the thing about the Gotha most worth remembering after the raids themselves. Solving the blind spot by cutting a hole through the aeroplane is not an obvious idea, and nobody had done it before.
Bombs
- Bomb load between 300 and 500 kg (660 and 1,100 lb) depending on target distance and fuel state; the G.Vb was cleared for a larger payload at a maximum take-off weight of 4,550 kg. A commonly quoted representative load is fourteen 25 kg bombs.
- On the daylight London raids of 1917 the typical fit was six 50 kg bombs, because the fuel needed for the North Sea crossing and back came out of the same weight budget.
- Bombs were of the German PuW family, in nominal sizes of roughly 12.5, 50, 100 and 300 kg. A 50 kg bomb went through several floors of the Upper North Street School in Poplar on 13 June 1917 and detonated in an infants' classroom, killing 18 children.
- From the G.V onward all bombs were carried externally, because the fuselage bomb bay had been given up to the relocated fuel tanks. Racks under the fuselage and the lower wing centre section.
- The last development was the 1 kg B-1E Elektronbrandbombe, a magnesium-alloy incendiary. Thousands were delivered to the bomber bases for Der Feuerplan, a scheme to send every German heavy bomber over London and Paris in waves until the cities burned. The order to take off was cancelled at the last moment in August and again in September 1918.
Aiming, navigation and weather
- Bombing was visual, from the nose position, using an optical drift sight and a level run at 3,600 to 4,500 m. Accuracy in any modern sense did not exist; the aiming point was a city.
- Navigation was by compass, dead reckoning and landmarks, over a hundred miles of open sea. On 18 August 1917 twenty-eight Gothas set out, found themselves 64 km off course after three hours, and abandoned the raid; two came down in the North Sea, others ran out of fuel, and two force-landed in neutral Holland.
- Weather was the decisive variable and the Germans knew it. From December 1917 a radio-equipped Rumpler C.IV was sent out ahead of raids to make weather observations off the English coast — an early and entirely sensible use of an aeroplane as a meteorological instrument.
- At night, navigation and landing both became far harder. Damaged aircraft that limped back across the Channel were then routinely lost putting down on a darkened Belgian field.
- The four Gotha bases around Ghent — Sint-Denijs-Westrem, Gontrode, Mariakerke and later Oostakker — were deliberately levelled to reduce damage to undercarriages, which tells you how bad the landing problem was.
What the Gotha did not carry
- No armour and no protection for the crew, and no self-sealing or inerted fuel tanks. The move of the tanks into the fuselage in the G.V reduced the fire risk in a crash landing and put several hundred kilograms of petrol directly behind the pilot.
- No forward-firing fixed gun and no synchronising gear, which on a pusher layout is exactly right and needs no apology.
- No power-operated turret, no gun heating, no oxygen for most of the campaign and no cabin heating of any kind, on an aeroplane that spent four hours at a height where water freezes and men black out.
- No radio in the bombers themselves for most of the campaign; the weather Rumpler carried the set, and the raiding formation was out of contact with the ground from take-off to landing.
- No parachutes for the crews through the daylight campaign. German aircrew began receiving Heinecke parachutes only in 1918, and the crews who burned over Kent in 1917 had nothing.
Three typical loadouts
- Daylight raid on England, Kagohl 3, Unternehmen Türkenkreuz, May to August 1917
- Six 50 kg bombs, full tanks, three guns, flown in formation at 12,000 to 15,000 ft above the practical ceiling of most British home-defence aircraft. Operation Turk's Cross began at two in the afternoon of 25 May 1917 when twelve Gothas set out for London, found it under cloud, and bombed Folkestone and Shorncliffe Camp instead: 95 people killed and 195 injured, most of them shoppers in Tontine Street, plus 17 Canadian soldiers killed at the camp. Seventy British aircraft went up and none could catch them. On 13 June fourteen Gothas made the first daylight raid on London itself, dropped 118 high-explosive bombs, killed 162 people and injured over 400 including 18 children at the Upper North Street School in Poplar, and came home without a loss. Ninety-two British aircraft took off that day and almost none could climb high enough to matter.
- Night raid on London, Bogohl 3, September 1917 to May 1918
- Same bomb load, sometimes with incendiaries, flown singly or in loose streams after dark. The switch was forced, not chosen: by late August 1917 British defences had improved enough that daylight raiding was costing more aircraft than Germany could replace, three Gothas being shot down over Kent on 22 August alone. The first experimental night attack was flown on 3 September 1917 against Chatham, where a single 50 kg bomb on a drill hall being used as a dormitory killed 130 sailors and wounded 88 — the worst single loss of life from bombing in Britain during the war. Night raids protected the aircraft and wrecked the accuracy, the navigation and the landings. By this stage up to 300,000 Londoners were sheltering in Underground stations, which was the effect the raids actually achieved.

- Bomb load against Calais, Dunkirk, Boulogne, troop concentrations and railways in support of the German spring offensive from 21 March 1918. This is what the Englandgeschwader spent most of its final year doing, and it is the quiet admission that the strategic campaign had failed. The last and largest raid on England was flown on the night of 19 May 1918 by 38 Gothas and three Giants: six Gothas were shot down and a seventh forced down, 49 people were killed, and the aeroplane raids on Britain effectively ended there.
Sourcing caveat: this page prefers figures with a stated altitude, and for the Gotha G.V there is essentially one — 140 km/h at 3,658 m, or 87 mph at 12,000 ft. Everything else in the performance column is quoted bare, and the disagreements are large: service ceiling appears as 4,500, 5,000 and 6,500 m; range as 491 km and as 840 km; endurance as five hours and as six; climb to 3,000 m as 21 minutes and as 28; production of the G.V as 205 and as 225 across its subtypes; bomb load as 300, 500 and in one source 1,500 kg, the last of which is not credible for this airframe. Casualty figures for the raids are better recorded than the aircraft's performance, because they were counted by coroners rather than estimated by engineers: 95 dead at Folkestone on 25 May 1917 and 162 dead in London on 13 June 1917 are firm, and the aeroplane raids on Britain as a whole are credited with roughly 840 deaths. Where this page gives a single number it has taken the best-attested one, and readers should treat the performance figures for German heavy bombers of 1917 with more caution than they would apply to a contemporary fighter.
Variants
The Gotha G.V is the reason the Royal Air Force exists
That sentence is the point of this page and it is not an exaggeration. Everything else — the tonnage, the speed, the tunnel, the marks — is detail hung on it. When the Englandgeschwader bombed London in broad daylight on 13 June 1917, killed 162 people including a class of infants in Poplar, and went home without losing a single aeroplane, it demonstrated something no Zeppelin campaign had ever quite proved: that Britain's capital could be reached and hurt by aircraft, and that Britain's existing arrangements could do nothing about it. Ninety-two British machines went up that day and almost none could reach the height the Gothas were flying at.
The consequences arrived fast and they were structural rather than tactical. Two front-line squadrons were withdrawn from France for home defence within days — taken out of a land campaign, on the explicit condition that they be returned within three weeks for the Ypres offensive, which is precisely the kind of decision a government makes when the newspapers have got hold of something. Lieutenant-General Jan Smuts was asked to examine air organisation and home defence and reported within days on the first question and on 17 August 1917 on the second. From the first came a unified London Air Defence Area under Major-General Edward Ashmore from August 1917: observers reporting by telephone to a central plotting room in Horse Guards, markers colour-coded against a clock face so a controller could see at a glance how old each report was, guns and searchlights and fighters directed as one system. That is the direct ancestor of the Dowding System, and it wins the Battle of Britain twenty-three years later.
From the second came something larger. Smuts argued that air power had become an end in itself rather than an auxiliary of armies and navies, and that it therefore needed its own service, its own staff and its own ministry. The Air Force (Constitution) Bill passed Parliament on 23 November 1917 and received royal assent on 29 November; the King named the new service by decree on 7 March 1918; and on 1 April 1918 the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service merged into the Royal Air Force, at that moment the largest air force in the world and the first independent one of any consequence. Half a tonne of bombs from a plywood biplane did that.
It should be said just as plainly that the aeroplane itself was not very good. The G.V was up to 450 kg heavier than the G.IV it replaced, its Mercedes engines could not make their rated power on 1918 fuel, and it flew lower and no faster; the British official view that "the Gotha G V turned out to be a disappointment, no better than the G IV" is fair. It was demanding to land and prone to nosing over. Bogohl 3 lost 24 aircraft to the enemy and 36 to landing accidents. The G.V is a bomber that killed more of its own crews on its own aerodromes than the Royal Flying Corps ever managed to, and it still altered the shape of British defence policy for a century. Both halves of that are true and neither cancels the other.
- Gotha G.IV (1916–17 / 230)
- The aircraft that actually flew the daylight raids of 1917 and the one most people mean by "Gotha". Fully plywood-skinned fuselage, ailerons added to the lower wing for lateral control, and the first aircraft to carry the Gotha tunnel. Fuel tanks in the engine nacelles, which was the flaw the G.V existed to correct. Built by Gothaer, Siemens-Schuckert and LVG.
- Gotha G.V (1917–18 / ~120 of the base subtype)
- Fuel tanks moved into the fuselage behind the pilot, smaller engine nacelles raised on struts above the lower wing, internal walkway and bomb bay deleted, all bombs carried externally. Entered service August 1917. No performance improvement over the G.IV, and rather less ceiling.
- Gotha G.Va (1918 / 25)
- The Kastensteuerung compound tail unit — biplane horizontal stabilisers with twin rudders — tested in February 1918 and adopted to cure the type's marginal directional control on one engine. Also a slightly shorter forward fuselage and an auxiliary nose undercarriage. All 25 went to Bogohl 3.
- Gotha G.Vb (1918 / 80)
- Increased payload at a maximum take-off weight of 4,550 kg, and the Stossfahrgestell: a tandem two-bogie main undercarriage intended to stop the aircraft flipping over on landing. It worked so well that it was fitted to every G.V in the wing. Some aircraft had Flettner servo tabs on the ailerons. First delivered June 1918; all 80 built by the Armistice, the last batch going straight to the Allied commission.
- Siemens-Schuckert and LVG licence production (1917 / 80 and 100 ordered)
- Licence-built G.IVs, slightly heavier and slower than Gothaer-built machines because Idflieg specified a strengthened airframe. LVG cured the tail-heaviness of its aircraft by increasing wing sweepback. Late-production examples usually incorporated the nose wheels and Flettner tabs developed for the G.V.
- Siemens-Schuckert experimental aircraft (1917–18 / individual airframes)
- One with tractor rather than pusher engines, one with an extra wing bay, two with a new aerofoil section and one with a supercharger. None had been fully evaluated by the end of the war, and none reached the front.
- Austro-Hungarian G.IV (1917–18 / about 30)
- LVG-built aircraft fitted with Hiero engines and 8 mm Schwarzlose machine guns for the k.u.k. Luftfahrtruppen. One further aircraft was experimentally armed with a 20 mm Becker cannon for ground attack.
- Trainers (1918)
- Late Siemens-Schuckert and LVG airframes, obsolete before delivery, completed as trainers with lower-powered Argus As.III or NAG C.III engines. The Siemens-built trainers adopted the G.V's internal fuel tanks.
- Gotha G.VII, G.VIII and G.IX (1918)
- Later and mostly stillborn developments, the G.VII built to reach 6,000 to 7,000 m. None arrived in numbers sufficient to allow a return to daylight bombing, which is the quiet epitaph of the whole German strategic bombing effort.
- Polish G.IV (1919–20 / 2)
- Aircraft 213/17, later renumbered 100/17, was captured by Polish forces during the Greater Poland Uprising in 1919, repaired, and joined 21 Eskadra Niszczycielska on 30 April 1920. It flew operationally in the Polish-Soviet War between 20 May and 2 August 1920, was damaged on 31 August and withdrawn. A second aircraft, 606/16, came to Poland as reparations in 1921 and was never used. These were the only Gothas of any mark to survive the Treaty of Versailles.
Survivors, stated precisely, because here the distinction between original and reproduction resolves into something starker than usual: there are no survivors of either kind. Every Gotha G-type in German hands was destroyed under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. The single documented exception, a G.IV in Polish possession, was withdrawn from service in 1920 and did not last either. No complete original Gotha bomber of any mark exists anywhere in the world, and — unlike the Nieuport 11, the Sopwith Camel or the Fokker Dr.I — no full-scale flying reproduction has ever been built, because a 23.7 m twin-engined pusher biplane is not a homebuilt project. What survives is fragments and models. The Imperial War Museum holds a propeller from a Gotha G.V with its Mercedes D.IVa hub. Wreck sites remain on the seabed: the Gotha G.IV 656/16 of Kasta 16, driven into the Thames Estuary on 12 August 1917 by Flight Lieutenant Harold Kerby in a Sopwith Pup, lies somewhere off the Kent coast, and Kerby circled the capsized machine and threw a lifebelt to the one crewman he could see. The San Diego Air and Space Museum represents the type with a scratch-built 1/48 model in lozenge camouflage, which the museum is candid about. So the aircraft that made the Royal Air Force necessary is one of the very few significant types of the First World War of which nothing whatever is left to look at. The RAF is its monument, and so, in a bleaker way, is the memorial to eighteen children in Poplar.

The Royal Air Force is born
Prompted by the Smuts report and the alarm of the raids, Britain merges the RFC and RNAS into the Royal Air Force, the world's first independent air force.
The reckoning
The raids wind down as defences and losses bite; many Gothas are lost to accidents as much as to the enemy. With the Armistice the campaign ends, and no complete Gotha will survive the peace.

On 25 May 1917 the England Squadron's Gothas, turned back from London by cloud, unloaded on Folkestone and the army camp at Shorncliffe instead. Around 95 people were killed, many of them civilians queueing outside shops. It was a brutal introduction to a new kind of war, and a warning of what was coming to the capital three weeks later.

Fourteen or so Gothas reached London on the morning of 13 June 1917 and bombed at will. Around 160 people were killed and over 400 injured, the highest toll of any air raid on the city during the war. The bombers turned for home almost untouched. The bomb passed through the upper storeys of the Upper North Street School in Poplar and burst in an infants' class on the ground floor. Eighteen children died and many more were injured. The funeral drew huge crowds, and the deaths became a symbol of the raids' cruelty and of the government's failure to defend the capital. It is remembered as one of the most poignant civilian tragedies of the British home front.

Three weeks later the Gothas came again, and the public patience with an undefended sky ran out.

On 7 July 1917 another daylight formation struck London. This time defenders were up in numbers, but coordination was poor and the Gothas again escaped with light losses. The raid confirmed that piecemeal defence was not working and hardened the case for a unified command. Squadrons were recalled from the Western Front, to the dismay of commanders in France who needed every aircraft.

From September 1917 the England Squadron flew mainly at night, using moonlit periods for navigation. Night raids were less accurate but far harder to intercept, and they prolonged the campaign into 1918. Londoners took to the Underground stations for shelter in scenes that prefigured the Blitz of the next war. The psychological effect of repeated night alarms, sirens and blackouts was out of all proportion to the tonnage dropped.

The arched tunnel through the Gotha's rear fuselage let its rear gunner fire down and back at aircraft climbing beneath the tail, the classic blind spot of every large bomber. British and Commonwealth pilots learned to respect it. A slow, ungainly bomber that could shoot at what was under it was a far tougher target than its performance figures implied, and the tunnel is one reason the Gothas were not swept from the sky as quickly as their speed suggested they should have been.

Nose-heavy, with its engines set well back and a tendency to nose over, the Gotha was notoriously difficult to land, especially at night and when tired crews returned from a long raid. Later variants added an auxiliary nose wheel to reduce the risk of tipping. A large share of the Gothas lost during the England campaign were destroyed in accidents and crash landings rather than by British guns or fighters, a sobering reminder of how dangerous early aviation was even without an enemy.

The raids were flown by Kagohl 3, the unit remembered as the England Squadron, based around Ghent in German-occupied Belgium. From there the Gothas had just enough range to reach London and return, weather permitting. The squadron's story is one of ambition stretched to the limit of the machines: long over-water flights, uncertain navigation, and the constant threat of running out of fuel or being caught by the weather on the way home.

So closely was the type identified with the raids that Gotha became the generic British term for any large German bomber. The far bigger Zeppelin-Staaken R-planes, the Riesenflugzeug Giants that flew some of the same raids, were routinely called Gothas by the press and public. The name outlived the aircraft: for a generation, a Gotha meant the threat from the sky.

Germany also fielded the Riesenflugzeuge, giant multi-engined bombers such as the Zeppelin-Staaken R.VI, which flew a number of raids on Britain alongside the Gothas and carried heavier single bombs. They were far fewer in number and are a story in their own right; this page is about the Gotha, the aircraft that carried the weight of the campaign and gave it its name. But it is worth remembering that the Gotha was the workhorse of a broader effort, not the whole of it.

Under the pressure of the raids, Britain created the London Air Defence Area, coordinating fighters, anti-aircraft guns, searchlights and an observer network into a single system. Pilots flying Sopwith Camels and S.E.5a fighters gradually made the daylight sky too dangerous for the Gothas, and night defence improved through 1918. The organisation and doctrine built to stop the Gothas became the direct ancestor of the integrated air defence that would win the Battle of Britain in 1940.

In all, the German aeroplane raids on Britain killed roughly 850 people and injured close to 2,000, figures that vary by source and should be read as estimates. The physical damage was slight next to what aircraft would do in later wars. The lasting legacy was strategic and institutional: a new independent air force, a template for air defence, and a permanent lesson that no city was now beyond reach.

What was the Gotha G.V and who built it?
The Gotha G.V was a large twin-engined biplane heavy bomber built by Gothaer Waggonfabrik and flown by the German Luftstreitkraefte in 1917 and 1918. It was the aircraft most associated with Germany's strategic bombing campaign against Britain, the Gotha raids.
Why were the Gotha raids on London so important?
They took strategic bombing from the Zeppelin airships to fixed-wing bombers and caused civilian casualties and public alarm out of all proportion to the physical damage. Their strategic consequences were far larger than the bombs: Britain had to divert fighter squadrons and guns to home defence, and the shock reshaped British air power.
Did the Gotha raids really lead to the creation of the RAF?
They were a major catalyst. The alarm caused by the daylight raids on London prompted the Smuts report of 1917, which recommended a unified, independent air service. That led directly to the formation of the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918, the world's first independent air force, along with a reorganised home air defence.
What was the Gotha tunnel?
A firing channel arched through the rear fuselage that let the rear gunner fire downward and rearward to cover the aircraft's vulnerable underside and tail, a blind spot earlier bombers could not defend. Allied pilots who assumed the belly was a safe approach were sometimes met by fire from the tunnel.
Were the engines really pushers?
Yes. The two Mercedes D.IVa inline engines of about 260 horsepower each were mounted between the wings and drove pusher propellers, facing rearward. Some quick reference sources describe the layout incorrectly; the pusher arrangement is well documented in contemporary cutaways and the technical record.
How many Gotha G.Vs were built, and how fast was it?
Roughly 205 Gotha G.V are commonly cited, though figures vary and totals for all Gotha G-types are higher. Top speed was about 140 km/h at low level, so the Gotha relied on altitude, defensive fire and, later, darkness rather than speed.
Does any Gotha G.V survive today?
No complete Gotha G.V survives. Only relics, fragments and a full-scale replica exist; the RAF Manston History Museum displays a replica and fragments are held in British collections. That is why there is no airworthy Gotha and no way to book a flight in one.
