طيران البحرية لجمهورية كوريا (قيادة القوات الجوية البحرية)
The Republic of Korea Navy’s air arm, Naval Air Command at Pohang since July 2022, grew from a single rebuilt Texan at Jinhae in 1951 into a force of about 70 submarine hunters and ship-borne helicopters — and between June 2024 and September 2026 it took six P-8A Poseidons, lost a 58-year-old P-3CK and four crew at Pohang, and began replacing its Lynx fleet with MH-60R Seahawks.
The South Korean naval aviation story: a rebuilt Texan at Jinhae, a boat sunk in the East Sea and Poseidons at Pohang
1951–1963: a rebuilt Texan at Jinhae, and a false start
South Korean naval flying began in the middle of a war, with almost nothing. Korean Wikipedia dates an aviation section (항공반) at the Jinhae naval base to April 1951, and says that in August that year the navy put into service the Haechwiho (海鷲號, "sea eagle"), a North American T-6 Texan rebuilt for naval duties — the first aircraft the country modified itself. A naval air unit was formally founded on 15 July 1957, the date the service still counts from. It did not last: Namuwiki records that it was disbanded on 1 March 1963 because American advisers judged it premature. For a decade the navy had no aircraft of its own.
1958–1978: marine spotters, Trackers and the move to Pohang
The lineage that survived was the Marine Corps’. A marine air observation unit was formed on 1 March 1958 with eight aircraft, and in 1963 became an aviation group flying L-19 and L-20 spotter aircraft, according to Namuwiki. It went to Vietnam with the marine formation and flew observation, leaflet and fire-support missions there — Korean Wikipedia calls it the country’s first air unit deployed abroad. When the Marine Corps headquarters was dissolved in 1973, its aviation was merged into a re-formed naval air unit at Gimhae on 1 May 1973, with 125 people and 23 aircraft. The S-2 Tracker gave that unit a real job: eight flown by the air force from 1970 passed to the navy in January 1976 and 23 more followed, 31 in all. The headquarters moved to Pohang on 16 July 1978.
1977–1991: Alouettes on destroyers and a boat sunk in the East Sea
Ship-borne helicopters came next. Twelve Aérospatiale Alouette IIIs arrived in 1977–1979 for the ex-American Gearing-class destroyers of the Chungbuk class, armed for both anti-submarine and anti-ship work. On 13 August 1983 the Alouette of the destroyer Gangwon fired an AS-12 missile at a fast North Korean infiltration boat in the East Sea, which South Korea says had landed four agents on the Gyeongbuk coast on 5 August; the boat returned fire and was sunk, and three bodies were recovered, according to Namuwiki. No North Korean account of the episode was found. In February 1986 the air arm was reorganised as the 6th Air Wing (제6항공전단).
1991–2016: Lynx and Orion, from the Yellow Sea to the Gulf of Aden
The 1990s brought the aircraft that still form most of the fleet. Twelve Westland Lynx Mk.99s arrived from 1990 and 13 Super Lynx Mk.99As in 1999–2000; the first P-3C Orions came in 1995, and the last Tracker had gone by 2001. Eight ex-US Navy airframes were rebuilt by Korean Air and L-3 as P-3CKs by 2010. The helicopters went to sea in earnest with the Cheonghae Unit, formed on 3 March 2009 to escort shipping off Somalia: in January 2011 the Lynx of the destroyer Choe Yeong engaged pirates during the rescue of the tanker Samho Jewelry. The record has a darker side. A Lynx went down near Chujado in April 2010 with all aboard, another ditched on 17 April 2010 after parts that should have been replaced were not, and a third crashed in the East Sea on 26 September 2016, killing three.
2016–2026: Wildcat, Poseidon, Seahawk — and a crash at Pohang
The last decade has replaced almost everything. Eight AW159 Wildcats, chosen on 15 January 2013 over the MH-60, were delivered in 2016. The 6th Air Wing became Naval Air Command, under a rear admiral, on 15 July 2022. Six Boeing P-8A Poseidons reached Pohang on 19 and 30 June 2024 and were declared operational in July 2025. Between them came the worst day in the arm’s recent history: on 29 May 2025 a P-3CK whose airframe had first been delivered to the US Navy in 1967 crashed near Pohang on a training circuit, killing all four crew. Twelve MH-60R Seahawks, selected in December 2020, were formally accepted on 1 April 2026; on 19 May 2026 Washington approved 24 more, and on 15 September 2026 Seoul confirmed about 20 to replace the Lynx, according to Namuwiki.
ما الذي ينجح، وما الذي لا ينجح، وما الذي لا يزال مفقوداً
The arm’s strength is its focus: nearly every aircraft it owns exists to find submarines, and the North’s submarine force is the threat it was built against. Its weakness has been age and slow decisions. The P-8 was first sought in 2013 to replace 16 P-3Cs and arrived eleven years later in a batch of six, not the 20 originally sought; the P-3CK lost in 2025 had no stall-warning device and no flight data recorder, the investigation reported. Wikipedia’s account of the P-3CK upgrade cites a 2010 exercise in which South Korean forces detected only 28 per cent of North Korean submarines. Fifteen Orions still fly beside six Poseidons, and the plan is to replace them by 2035. The Lynx, now 26 to 36 years old, is the next to go.

How the Republic of Korea Navy aviation (Naval Air Command) is organised
Naval Air Command, the 6th Air Wing until July 2022, runs the navy’s aircraft from Pohang through three maritime air groups and a training group. Six P-8A Poseidons and 15 Orions hunt submarines from Pohang, and AW159 Wildcats, Lynx and new MH-60R Seahawks fly from the destroyers and frigates. The Marine Corps has had its own aviation group, also at Pohang, since December 2021.
