Gjadër Air Base
Reserve (no aircraft based; reactivated for Black Hawk training in July 2024; retired MiGs stored in its rock tunnels; an Italian-run migrant centre since 2024 on part of the site)
Gjadër Air Base: what it was built for and what flies there now
Gjadër, in the Zadrima plain north of Lezhë, was the most ambitious air base of Enver Hoxha’s Albania: a jet base built against the side of a mountain, with tunnels cut into the rock to hide its fighters from attack. The ministry dates it to 1974, when two pilots from Rinas, Haki Jupasi and Serafin Shegani, made the first landings on the new runway; Wikipedia gives the first landing as 10 July 1973 and the official opening as 15 March 1974. Its regiment flew Chinese-built F-6 and F-7A fighters.
After communism the base had a brief second life as an American drone base, used by the CIA in 1994 and by US Army Predators over Bosnia in 1995, according to Wikipedia. In the unrest of March 1997 its buildings were wrecked and the military withdrew, and flying stopped altogether around 2000. When Defence Minister Mimi Kodheli inspected it in January 2014, the ministry reported 32 MiG aircraft, out of service for years, still stored in the tunnels.
In July 2024, fifty years after it opened, the ministry announced that Gjadër was back in use for training Black Hawk crews and new pilots. The same year Italy built a migrant reception centre on part of the former air base under a 2023 agreement between the two governments. No Albanian aircraft are permanently based at Gjadër; the airspace around it remains the permanently active restricted area LAR2 GJADRI.

What Gjadër is known for
Fighters in the mountain
Tunnels cut into the rock beside the runway were built to shelter the regiment’s jets from attack, and they still hold retired fighters.
32 out-of-service MiGs were stored in the tunnels in January 2014, according to the Ministry of Defence.
Hoxha’s northern fighter base
Built in the 1970s for Chinese-built copies of the MiG-19 and MiG-21, it was the newest jet base of communist Albania.
Opened in 1974 (first landing 10 July 1973, per Wikipedia); runway about 2,800 m.
An early drone base
Wikipedia records CIA GNAT-750 drones in 1994 and US Army Predators flying over Bosnia from Gjadër in 1995.
Four Predators deployed from July 1995; two lost in August 1995, according to Wikipedia.
Wrecked in 1997
In the collapse of state authority in March 1997 the base’s buildings were destroyed and the military left.
Abandoned on 16 March 1997, according to Wikipedia; flying ceased in 2000.
Back in use at fifty
The Air Force reactivated the runway for Black Hawk crew training, while part of the site became an Italian-run migrant centre.
Reactivation announced on 13 July 2024; Italy–Albania migration protocol signed on 6 November 2023.
A versão longa
01A base built against a mountainLer
In the 1960s and 1970s communist Albania, isolated from both blocs and allied only with China, built its defences on the assumption of invasion. Gjadër was the air force’s answer: a new jet base on the flat Zadrima plain, laid out against a mountainside so that aircraft could be towed off the runway into tunnels in the rock. Wikipedia dates construction to 1969 and says the tunnels could hold about 50 aircraft and their personnel, and that pilots had to avoid turning on take-off because of the mountain; those figures are not confirmed by an official source.
The ministry’s own account is simpler. It dates the base to 1974 and records that the first aircraft to land on the new runway were flown in from Rinas by two pilots, Haki Jupasi and Serafin Shegani, in supersonic MiG-19 and MiG-21 types. In Albanian service these were the Chinese-built Shenyang F-6 and Chengdu F-7A. Wikipedia gives a first landing on 10 July 1973 and an official opening on 15 March 1974.
Wikipedia names the unit Regiment 5646, later 4010, and says it was built up in 1976 with six FT-5 trainers and the F-7A squadron from Rinas in May and a second F-6 squadron from Kuçovë on 16 October. The ministry confirms only the essentials: the Gjadër Regiment of 1974 with MiG-19 and MiG-21 fighters.
02Drones over Bosnia, 1994–1995Ler
After the fall of communism Albania opened itself to the West, and Gjadër’s position across the Adriatic from Italy and within reach of Bosnia made it useful to the United States. According to Wikipedia, which cites Jeffrey Richelson and Aviation Week, the CIA based two GNAT-750 drones and a satellite ground station at Gjadër from February to April 1994 to watch Bosnia and Yugoslavia, with mixed results.
The following year the US Army brought four Predators, flown in by C-130, with more than 70 personnel. Wikipedia says flying began in July 1995, that one Predator was lost over Bosnia on 11 August and a second destroyed on 14 August after an engine failure, and that the operation, Nomad Vigil, was extended from 60 to 120 days before moving to Taszár in Hungary in March 1996. Wikipedia’s Predator article dates Nomad Vigil to July–November 1995 and adds a third loss on 5 September, claimed as a shoot-down by Bosnian Serb forces. These accounts were not checked against US government records and are given as Wikipedia reports them.
031997, the tunnels and the return of flyingLer
In early 1997 the collapse of pyramid investment schemes led to armed unrest and a breakdown of state authority across much of Albania. Wikipedia records that Gjadër’s control tower and buildings were destroyed on 12 March 1997 and that the military abandoned the base on 16 March; it says flying ceased in 2000. Its source for the damage is not an official one.
The jets never left. When Defence Minister Mimi Kodheli inspected the base on 27 January 2014, the ministry reported 32 MiG aircraft, out of service for several years, kept in the tunnels, and said the minister had been briefed on the base’s problems. Her deputy, Dritan Hila, visited again in April 2014.
On 13 July 2024 the ministry marked fifty years of Gjadër by announcing that it was back in use for Black Hawk helicopter flying, with US instructors present. Air Force commander Brigadier General Ferdinant Dimo said the revived base would provide new infrastructure for training helicopter crews and giving new pilots their basic training. The same year, under a protocol signed by Giorgia Meloni and Edi Rama on 6 November 2023, Italy began building a migrant centre on the former air base, which Wikipedia says was built from March 2024; the centre has faced repeated challenges in Italian courts.

FT-5 belly landing
Wikipedia records that an FT-5 two-seat trainer flown by Ismet Zervoi and Martin Bregu made a successful belly landing at Gjadër on 9 September 1992. No injuries are reported. The account has not been checked against an official source and the cause is not given.
Two Predators lost
During Nomad Vigil, the US Army Predator deployment flown from Gjadër, Wikipedia says one aircraft was lost over Bosnia on 11 August 1995 and a second destroyed on 14 August after an engine failure, with hostile fire also suggested. Wikipedia’s Predator article describes the second as deliberately destroyed after the engine failed and adds a third, which Bosnian Serb forces claimed to have shot down on 5 September. No US official loss list was consulted.
The base is wrecked
In the unrest that followed the collapse of the pyramid schemes, Wikipedia says the control tower and buildings at Gjadër were destroyed on 12 March 1997 and that the military abandoned the base four days later. It gives no casualty figures and none are published here. Flying never properly resumed; Wikipedia dates the end of operations to 2000.
Thirty-two MiGs in the tunnels
Defence Minister Mimi Kodheli, with Air Force commander Brigadier General Frederik Beltoja, inspected Gjadër. The ministry reported that the tunnels held 32 MiG aircraft that had been out of service for several years, and that the minister was briefed on the problems the base faced.
