Royal Australian Air Force

The Royal Australian Air Force, formed on 31 March 1921 out of the Australian Flying Corps, grew into the world’s fourth-largest air force by 1945, fought in Korea, Malaya and Vietnam, flew the F-111 for 37 years, and in 2026 is an air force of 72 F-35As, Growlers, Wedgetails and Poseidons that is betting much of its future on long-range missiles and the home-built MQ-28 Ghost Bat.

故事

The Royal Australian Air Force story: Point Cook in 1914, the F-111 for 37 years and a bet on the Ghost Bat

1914–1939: from Point Cook to an independent air force

Australian military flying began at Point Cook, west of Melbourne, where Eric Harrison took a Bristol Boxkite up on 1 March 1914 for the new Central Flying School; the first course, which included Lieutenant Richard Williams, began on 17 August. The Australian Flying Corps that grew from it sent a Half Flight to Mesopotamia in May 1915, then four squadrons to Egypt, Palestine and the Western Front. About 3,700 men served in it and 175 were killed; Frank McNamara won the Victoria Cross for landing behind Turkish lines to rescue a downed comrade. The corps was disbanded in 1919. On 31 March 1921 the Australian Air Force was formed as a separate service with 21 officers, 128 other ranks and 170 aircraft, most of them an Imperial gift; the “Royal” prefix followed on 31 August 1921. It was the second such service in the Commonwealth after the RAF, and between the wars it was kept very small: 50 officers and 300 men in 1924.

1939–1945: Empire training, Bomber Command and the Pacific

Rearmament came late. By September 1939 the RAAF had 12 squadrons and 246 aircraft. Under the Riverdale agreement of 17 December 1939 Australia undertook to supply 28,000 aircrew over three years to the Empire Air Training Scheme, and thousands of Australians ended up in RAF and RAAF Article XV squadrons in Europe. No. 10 Squadron, flying Sunderlands from Britain, was the first Commonwealth squadron on active service in the war. Bomber Command took about 2 per cent of Australian enlistments but a far larger share of the dead: No. 460 Squadron alone lost 1,018 aircrew. At home, the Japanese raid on Darwin on 19 February 1942 found two RAAF squadrons with Wirraways and Hudsons; Kittyhawks of Nos 75 and 76 Squadrons then fought at Port Moresby and Milne Bay. By 1945 the RAAF had 216,900 men and women through its ranks, nearly 6,000 aircraft and 70 squadrons, and was the fourth-largest air force in the world.

1948–1972: Berlin, Korea, Malaya and Vietnam

The post-war air force stayed busy. A RAAF detachment flew the Berlin Airlift in 1948–1949. No. 77 Squadron, still in Japan, flew the first Commonwealth ground-support sorties in Korea on 2 July 1950 with Mustangs, lost its commanding officer, Lou Spence, in September, and swapped to Meteors in 1951, which proved outclassed by the MiG-15 and were switched to ground attack. Its war cost 41 pilots and almost 60 aircraft for five MiGs credited. In Malaya, No. 1 Squadron’s Lincolns dropped about 85 per cent of the Commonwealth’s bomb tonnage between 1950 and 1958, and Sabres and Canberras based at Butterworth stayed through Confrontation. In Vietnam, Caribous arrived at Vung Tau in August 1964, Iroquois of No. 9 Squadron supported the task force from 1966, and No. 2 Squadron’s Canberras flew about 12,000 sorties from Phan Rang until June 1971, losing two aircraft.

1973–2010: the F-111, the Hornet and East Timor

The F-111 defined the next era, though it arrived badly. Ordered on 24 October 1963, it was held up by structural problems for so long that Australia leased 24 F-4E Phantoms from 1970 to 1973; the first F-111Cs reached No. 82 Wing in June 1973. They then served for 37 years, the region’s longest-reaching strike aircraft, until the last flight on 3 December 2010; eight were lost with ten aircrew, and the fuel-tank deseal/reseal programme left a lasting legacy of illness and compensation claims. The fighter force went from the Sabre to the Mirage III in 1964 and to 75 F/A-18 Hornets, chosen on 20 October 1981 and mostly assembled at Avalon. In September 1999 the RAAF flew the evacuation of Dili and then the airlift for INTERFET in East Timor, with F-111s and Hornets held at Tindal as a deterrent.

2001–2024: Afghanistan, Iraq and Operation Okra

After 11 September 2001 Hornets guarded Diego Garcia and 707 tankers flew from Kyrgyzstan. In March 2003, No. 75 Squadron took 14 Hornets to the invasion of Iraq, began as escorts and ended flying close air support, with 350 sorties and 122 laser-guided bombs under rules tighter than those of the Americans; Orions and Hercules stayed in the region until 2009. Operation Okra began in October 2014 with six Super Hornets, a Wedgetail and a KC-30A in the United Arab Emirates. The last RAAF strike over Iraq and Syria was flown on 14 January 2018 and the final air rotation ended in September 2020. Okra’s worst moment came on 17 September 2016, when RAAF aircraft took part in a coalition strike near Deir ez-Zor that hit Syrian Army troops; Australia acknowledged its part and expressed regret. Okra formally closed on 20 December 2024.

2024–2026: a fifth-generation force, drones and long-range strike

Today the RAAF is a modern air force, and still a small one. The 72nd and final F-35A was delivered in December 2024; the type equips three squadrons at Williamtown and Tindal alongside 24 Super Hornets and 12 Growlers at Amberley. Six Wedgetails, fourteen Poseidons, Triton drones and the new MC-55A Peregrine give it reach over the sea approaches, and KC-30As and C-17s let it deploy across the world, as the Wedgetail did to protect the aid route into Ukraine in 2023–2025 and to the Gulf in March 2026. The weaknesses are numbers and depth: the 2026 National Defence Strategy spends heavily on long-range missiles and the MQ-28 Ghost Bat, but the Wedgetail needs replacing within a decade, the C-27J is to go, and the airlift fleet is ageing. Whether Ghost Bat makes up for a fighter force capped at 72 F-35s is the open question.

Rearmament came late. By September 1939 the RAAF had 12 squadrons and 246 aircraft.Royal Australian Air Force · verified 2026-10-01

How the Royal Australian Air Force is organised

One of the three services of the Australian Defence Force, run from Air Force Headquarters in Canberra by the Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Stephen Chappell. Its five fighter squadrons fly from three bases: three F-35A squadrons at Williamtown and Tindal, and the Super Hornets and Growlers at Amberley. Wedgetails, Poseidons, Tritons and the new MC-55A Peregrine watch the sea approaches, and the tankers and transports fly from Amberley and Richmond.

Who is stationed where in the Royal Australian Air Force

按基地排列飞行部队,当前部队优先。. RAAF flying units are numbered squadrons, and many numbers have outlived several bases and types: No. 77 Squadron flew Sabres from Butterworth, Mirages and Hornets from Williamtown, and now the F-35A. United States Army Air Forces units, the US Marine rotation at Darwin, Singapore’s No. 130 Squadron at Pearce, the Army’s helicopters at Townsville and civil tenants are listed and marked as not RAAF. Where a squadron’s base or dates rest on Wikipedia alone, the entry says so.

Everything people ask about the Royal Australian Air Force

What is the Royal Australian Air Force called officially?
Its official name is the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF); the Department of Defence also calls it simply “Air Force”. The current English Wikipedia article uses the same title. It was formed as the Australian Air Force on 31 March 1921 and received the “Royal” prefix on 31 August 1921.
What aircraft does the RAAF fly in 2026?
Its fighters are 72 F-35A闪电II战斗机, 24 F/A-18F Super Hornets and 12 EA-18G Growlers. It also flies six E-7A Wedgetails, 14 P-8A Poseidons, MQ-4C Triton drones, the new MC-55A Peregrine, seven KC-30A tankers, eight C-17As, 12 C-130J大力神运输机, ten C-27Js, and PC-21 和 Hawk 127 教练。.
Is the RAAF the second-oldest air force in the world?
It is often described that way. Formed on 31 March 1921, it was the second royal air arm in the Commonwealth after Britain’s RAF (1918), and among the earliest air forces founded as a separate service. Its roots go back further: the Central Flying School flew at Point Cook from 1 March 1914, and the Australian Flying Corps fought in the First World War.
How many F-35s does Australia have?
72 F-35As, ordered in two tranches in 2009 and 2014. The first arrived in Australia in December 2018 and the last was delivered in December 2024. They equip Nos 3 and 77 Squadrons and No. 2 Operational Conversion Unit at Williamtown, and No. 75 Squadron at Tindal.
Why did Australia keep the F-111 for so long?
Because nothing else in the region could match its range and payload. Ordered in 1963, the F-111C was delayed by structural problems until 1973, so Australia leased 24 F-4E 鬼怪战斗机 in the meantime. It flew for 37 years, until 3 December 2010. Eight were lost with ten aircrew, and most of the survivors were buried in a landfill in 2011 because of asbestos.
What did the RAAF do in the Korean War?
No. 77 Squadron flew 18,872 sorties, first in Mustangs and from 1951 in Gloster Meteors. It was credited with five MiG-15s but lost almost 60 aircraft and 41 pilots, and after the Meteor proved outclassed by the MiG it went back to ground attack.
Did the RAAF bomb Syria?
Yes. Under Operation Okra RAAF Super Hornets and Hornets struck Islamic State targets in Iraq from October 2014 and in Syria from 2015; the last RAAF strike was flown on 14 January 2018. On 17 September 2016 RAAF aircraft took part in a coalition strike near Deir ez-Zor that hit Syrian Army troops. Syria and Russia reported dozens killed, the coalition found the strike was made in error but in good faith, and Australia acknowledged its part.
What is the MQ-28 Ghost Bat?
An uncrewed combat aircraft designed and built in Australia by Boeing Australia to fly alongside crewed jets. It first flew on 27 February 2021 at Woomera, fired an AIM-120 missile at a target drone in December 2025, and on 9 December 2025 the government ordered six operational Block 2 aircraft for A$1.4 billion. Service entry is expected around 2028.
Where are the RAAF’s fighter jets based?
F-35As are at Williamtown, near Newcastle, and Tindal in the Northern Territory. Super Hornets and Growlers are at Amberley, near Brisbane. Curtin, Learmonth and Scherger are bare bases kept for exercises and crises, and Darwin is also an active RAAF base in the north.
Did Australia send the Wedgetail to the Middle East war in 2026?
Yes. On 10 March 2026 the government announced an E-7A Wedgetail and supporting personnel would deploy to the Gulf for an initial four weeks, with AMRAAM missiles supplied to the UAE. Ministers said the mission was defensive and that Australia was not taking offensive action against Iran.
