Chilean Air Force

Fuerza Aérea de Chile

The Chilean Air Force (Fuerza Aérea de Chile) was formed on 21 March 1930 as one of the older independent air forces, bombed its own fleet in 1931 and La Moneda in 1973, survived the embargo years on French, Israeli and home-built aircraft, and since 2006 has flown 46 F-16s with tankers and AWACS — while its Hercules keep Chile’s Antarctic air bridge open and its last F-5s count down to 2030.

Het verhaal

The Chilean Air Force story: an independent air force in 1930, La Moneda in 1973, the embargo years and 46 F-16s

1913–1931: from Ávalos’s school to an independent air force

Chilean military flying began with one officer. Captain Manuel Ávalos Prado was sent to Louis Blériot’s school in France in 1911 and opened the army’s aviation school in February 1913. Through the 1920s army pilots flew Avro 504s, Bristol M.1Cs, DH.9s and SE5as across the Andes, and on 3 March 1926 Grupo Mixto de Aviación N° 1 was formed at El Bosque. Its driving force was Arturo Merino Benítez, who ran the army aviation school from 1926, founded the airmail line that became LAN in 1929, and became the first commander when President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo merged army and navy aviation by Supreme Decree 1,167 on 21 March 1930. Chile thus had an independent air force twelve years after the RAF. It was tested within eighteen months: on 6 September 1931 its Junkers bombers and Curtiss Falcons attacked the mutinous fleet at Coquimbo. They hit little, but the mutiny collapsed.

1931–1970: a small air force, Antarctica and the first jets

German influence shaped the young service until the Second World War; after it, American aid, doctrine and aircraft dominated. Transport Group 1, later Grupo 10, began in 1945 at Los Cerrillos with two C-45s and a T-6, and in 1947 the air force flew to Antarctica for the first time, the start of a commitment that still defines it. The jet age arrived in 1954 with Grupo 7, followed by F-80Cs, T-33s, Vampires and, from the 1960s, Hawker Hunters. Twin Otters from 1966 opened the far south. The fleet was small and old, but the routes it flew — to Punta Arenas, Easter Island and the ice — were among the longest any South American air force had to cover.

1973–1990: La Moneda, the junta and the embargo years

On 11 September 1973 the air force’s commander, General Gustavo Leigh, joined the coup against President Salvador Allende and ordered La Moneda bombed. Grupo 7 Hunters fired rockets into the palace and the Tomás Moro residence and silenced radio transmitters; one pilot hit the FACh hospital by mistake. The service also turned on its own: General Alberto Bachelet, held at the Air War Academy, died in custody in March 1974. Leigh sat on the junta until Pinochet removed him on 24 July 1978. His successor, Fernando Matthei, would on the night of the 1988 plebiscite be the first junta member to admit publicly that the No vote had won. Abroad, the coup brought isolation: the Kennedy Amendment embargo of 1976 cut US support just after the F-5Es arrived, and British workers blocked Hunter engines until 1978. In the Beagle crisis of December 1978 the FACh faced Argentina with armed T-37 trainers as stopgaps.

1980–2010: Mirage, Pantera and the F-16

The embargo pushed Chile to France, Spain and Israel and to its own industry. ENAER assembled the T-35 Pillán and the C-101 Halcón; Mirage 50s were rebuilt with Israeli help into the canard-equipped Pantera; 25 ex-Belgian Mirage 5 Elkans followed; and in 1994 a converted Boeing 707 became the world’s first Phalcon airborne radar. In 1982, during the Falklands/Malvinas war, Chile stayed neutral while, according to British accounts, UK radar and intelligence flights operated from its territory. Only after Washington ended its restrictions on advanced arms sales to Latin America in 1997 could Chile buy a modern fighter: the F-16, with the contract for ten Block 50s signed on 2 February 2002 and 36 ex-Dutch MLUs bought in 2005 and 2009.

2010–2026: tankers, AWACS and the end of the old fleet

The 2010s turned a fighter force into an air force with reach. KC-135E tankers arrived from 2010, A-29B Super Tucanos replaced the A-37 and later the A-36, Black Hawks were added in 2018, and in 2022 two ex-RAF E-3D Sentrys replaced the Phalcon. The FACh became the host of Salitre, the region’s largest air exercise. Its worst loss came on 9 December 2019, when Hercules 990 vanished over the Drake Passage on the way to King George Island with 38 aboard. The air force chief said the cause might never be known. In 2026, as the F-5 turned fifty and the UH-1H made its last parade, the service began choosing what comes next.

What it is good at, and what is still missing

What is good: Chile runs one of the most capable air forces in South America — 46 F-16s, tankers, AWACS and its own F-16 maintenance capacity — and its Antarctic air bridge is a public service that few others could perform. What is weak: the fleet is ageing in layers. The F-5s are to go between 2030 and 2035 with no replacement chosen; only 32–34 of the F-16s are said to be kept active; the KC-135Es are old; the UH-1H and T-35 are being replaced only now. The history is still contested: the bombing of La Moneda and the abuses of the 1970s are part of the record, attributed here to the truth commissions and published accounts.

Everything people ask about the Chilean Air Force

What is the Chilean Air Force called in Spanish?
Fuerza Aérea de Chile, abbreviated FACh. Spanish is Chile’s official language, and that is the name the service uses on its own sites (fach.mil.cl, fach.cl) and in Supreme Decree 1,167 of 21 March 1930, as summarised by Spanish Wikipedia. The English Wikipedia article is titled Chilean Air Force.
When was the Chilean Air Force founded?
On 21 March 1930, when President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo merged army and navy aviation into a single independent service under Arturo Merino Benítez. That makes it one of the older independent air forces, created twelve years after the RAF. Military flying in Chile goes back to February 1913, when Captain Manuel Ávalos Prado opened the army aviation school.
Which fighter jets does the Chilean Air Force fly?
De F-16 Fighting Falcon — about 46, ten new F-16C/D Block 50s and 36 ex-Dutch F-16AM/BM MLUs — and 11–12 F-5E/F Tigre III at Punta Arenas. The A-29B Super Tucano is a trainer with a light attack role.
Did the Chilean Air Force bomb La Moneda?
Yes. On 11 September 1973, on the orders of the air force commander General Gustavo Leigh, Straatverkopers en jagers fired rockets into the presidential palace during the coup against President Salvador Allende, and also attacked his residence in Tomás Moro and pro-government radio transmitters. Accounts of the exact time differ between participants, from shortly before 11:30 to after noon.
When did Chile buy the F-16?
The Letter of Offer and Acceptance for ten new F-16C/D Block 50s was signed on 2 February 2002 after a competition against the Gripen and French types, and they were delivered in 2006. Chile then bought 36 used F-16AM/BMs from the Netherlands in 2005 and 2009. It was the first time the US had sold Chile modern fighters since a 20-year restriction on advanced arms sales to Latin America ended in 1997.
What happened to the Chilean C-130 lost in 2019?
Hercules 990 left Punta Arenas on 9 December 2019 for the Antarctic base on King George Island with 38 aboard and lost contact over the Drake Passage. Debris was found the next day and the main wreckage on 12 December; no one survived. The air force chief said on 22 December 2019 the cause might never be known, and no final finding was found in the sources checked for this page.
Does the Chilean Air Force fly to Antarctica?
Yes, and it has since 1947. Hercules transports fly from Punta Arenas to Teniente Marsh on King George Island, whose 1,292 m gravel runway is being rebuilt from October 2025; Twin Otters support the inland Glaciar Unión station; and a UH-60L reached the South Pole on 28 January 1999.
What is replacing the F-5 Tigre III?
Nothing has been chosen. In September 2026 the FACh’s director of planning, General Milton Zablah, said the F-5s will be retired between 2030 and 2035, that buying more F-16s is one option, and that the F-35 would be the logical next step although there are no official talks.
Who commands the Chilean Air Force?
General del Aire Hugo Rodríguez González, a helicopter pilot designated by President Gabriel Boric on 21 October 2022, who took command on 5 November 2022 for a four-year term ending in November 2026. The Minister of National Defence in 2026 is Fernando Barros.
Did Chile help Britain in the Falklands War?
Chile was officially neutral. British accounts describe a radar in Chilean Tierra del Fuego and Nimrod flights from Isla San Félix, and in 2005 the then FACh commander, Fernando Matthei, said he had done everything possible so that Argentina would lose. The UK calls the islands the Falklands and Argentina the Malvinas.
