Brazilian Air Force

Força Aérea Brasileira

The Brazilian Air Force (Força Aérea Brasileira, FAB) was created on 20 January 1941 by merging Brazil’s army and naval aviation, sank a U-boat off Rio and flew P-47s over Italy within four years, grew up alongside Embraer, and in 2026 is the largest air force in South America, flying the Gripen, the KC-390 and the Super Tucano while it waits for money to replace the last of its F-5s.

The Brazilian Air Force story: a U-boat off Rio, P-47s over Italy, Meteors paid for in cotton and Gripens built at home

1912–1941: army flyers, naval aviators and a new ministry

Brazilian military flying began in a civil war. Lieutenant Ricardo Kirk, the first Brazilian Army officer to earn a pilot’s brevet (at Étampes in France on 22 October 1912), flew reconnaissance for the army in the Contestado War from União da Vitória with three monoplanes and an Italian civilian pilot; he was killed in a crash near General Carneiro, Paraná, on 1 March 1915. The army and navy then built separate air arms. In the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932 the federal government’s army and naval aviation, about 58 aircraft by one modern count, faced nine or ten São Paulo machines. On 20 January 1941 President Getúlio Vargas’s government created a Ministry of Aeronautics that took over both air arms and civil aviation; the new service, first called the National Air Forces, took the name Força Aérea Brasileira on 22 May 1941. It inherited, by the Portuguese Wikipedia’s count, 430 aircraft of 35 types, all obsolete.

1942–1945: a U-boat off Rio and P-47s over the Po valley

Brazil declared war on Germany and Italy on 22 August 1942 after U-boats sank Brazilian ships, and the young air force’s first war was over its own coast. On 31 July 1943 a Brazilian Catalina named Arará, flown by Second Lieutenant Alberto M. Torres, joined a Brazilian Hudson and a US Navy Mariner of VP-74 in attacking U-199 off Rio de Janeiro; the Catalina’s depth charges sank her, with 49 dead and 12 survivors (uboat.net). The 1st Fighter Group (1º Grupo de Aviação de Caça), formed on 18 December 1943 under Major Nero Moura and trained in Florida, Panama and New York, landed at Livorno on 6 October 1944 and flew P-47D Thunderbolts in the US 350th Fighter Group. By 6 May 1945 it had flown 445 missions and 2,550 sorties, mostly against bridges, rail and vehicles in the Po valley. Its war cry “Senta a Púa!” and its ostrich badge are still worn at Santa Cruz.

1945–1975: Meteors for cotton, revolts and the Lobster War

Post-war Brazil paid for its first jets in kind: in October 1952 it ordered 60 Gloster Meteor F.8s and 10 T.7s from Britain and paid with 15,000 tons of raw cotton. American F-80Cs and T-33s followed, and the Smoke Squadron, founded with T-6s, flew its first display over Copacabana on 14 May 1952. The service was also political. In February 1956 Major Haroldo Veloso and Captain José Chaves Lameirão led a revolt of air force officers against President Juscelino Kubitschek from Jacareacanga in Pará, which collapsed after 19 days. In 1961–1963, during the “Lobster War” fishing dispute with France, FAB B-17s, P-2 Neptunes and S-2 Trackers shadowed French warships off the north-east; a Neptune found the destroyer Tartu on 26 February 1963, no shot was fired, and France withdrew by 10 March. Under the military governments of 1964–1985 the air force took part in the 1972–1974 campaigns against the Araguaia guerrilla, which a later Inter-American Court ruling and the National Truth Commission examined.

1969–2013: Embraer, the Tucano and the Mirage years

The decision that shaped the modern FAB was industrial. A 1965 Ministry of Aeronautics requirement produced the Bandeirante twin turboprop, first flown on 26 October 1968, and Embraer was founded in August 1969 to build it; the air force ordered 80 as the C-95 in May 1970. Embraer then licence-built 166 Aermacchi MB-326s as the AT-26 Xavante from 1970, designed the EMB 312 Tucano to an air force requirement of 1978 (168 delivered to the FAB from 29 September 1983) and took 29.7 per cent of the Italian-Brazilian AMX attack jet. Supersonic air defence arrived in 1972 with 16 Mirage IIIEBRs and four IIIDBRs; F-5E Tiger IIs followed from 1975. When the Mirage IIIs were retired in 2005 the gap was filled with 12 second-hand Mirage 2000s from France, delivered from September 2006 and retired in December 2013.

2001–2022: Super Tucanos over the Amazon and the long Gripen choice

From 2001 the air force built a force for the Amazon. The ALX programme bought 99 Embraer A-29 Super Tucanos, delivered from December 2003 to June 2012, to work with the SIVAM radar network and the E-99 airborne radars against unregistered flights. Article 303 of the Aeronautical Code, regulated by Decree 5,144 of 16 July 2004, allows the air force, after interrogation, an order to land and warning shots, to destroy an aircraft judged hostile, on the authority of the Commander of the Air Force. Super Tucanos fired warning shots at a drug-trafficking Cessna in June 2009 and bombed clandestine airstrips in the Ágata operations from 2011. The fighter question took longer: the F-X competition was cancelled and restarted, and only on 18 December 2013 did President Dilma Rousseff announce the Gripen NG, with a contract for 28 single-seat and 8 two-seat aircraft signed on 24 October 2014 and a technology-transfer deal that put a final assembly line at Embraer’s Gavião Peixoto plant.

2023–2026: Gripen, Millennium and an ageing rest of the fleet

By 2026 the FAB is two air forces. One is new: Gripens (designated F-39), the first Brazilian one flown in Sweden on 26 August 2019 and 12 delivered by the 2027 budget bill’s count, which took over Brasília’s air defence alert at Anápolis on 24 February 2026; the first Brazil-built F-39E was presented on 25 March 2026 and the two-seat F-39F, developed with Brazilian engineers, flew on 28 August 2026. The KC-390 Millennium, delivered from 4 September 2019 and now sold to European and Asian air forces, carried much of the 2024 Rio Grande do Sul flood airlift. The other is old: F-5Ms first bought in 1975, a handful of A-1M attack jets kept flying on short Italian support contracts, and transports and trainers from the 1970s and 1980s. Budgets explain the gap: the Gripen deliveries were stretched rather than cut in 2024, the KC-390 order fell from 28 to 19, and in July 2026 the air force told Congress that 36 Gripens were not enough and that it needed 66.

Brazil declared war on Germany and Italy on 22 August 1942 after U-boats sank Brazilian ships, and the young air force’s first war was over its own coast. On 31 July 1943 a Brazilian Catalina named Arará, flown by Second Lieutenant Alberto M.Brazilian Air Force · verified 2026-10-01

How the Brazilian Air Force is organised

One command, the Comando da Aeronáutica in Brasília, under the Ministry of Defence, with its bases run as numbered wings and its squadrons grouped into numbered aviation groups. The F-39 Gripen of the 1st Air Defence Group at Anápolis is the front-line fighter, 12 of 36 delivered, with ageing F-5Ms at Santa Cruz and Canoas and A-29 Super Tucanos on the Amazon and western borders. The KC-390 Millennium, 8 delivered of 19 on order, is replacing the transport fleet, while the last A-1M attack jets fly on short support contracts.

Who is stationed where in the Brazilian Air Force

Üslerine göre uçan birlikler, önce mevcut birlikler. Brazilian squadrons are numbered within aviation groups — 1º/14º GAv is the 1st Squadron of the 14th Aviation Group — and each carries a name, from Jaguar at Anápolis to Pampa at Canoas. The US forces at Parnamirim Field in the Second World War and a Navy helicopter squadron at Belém are listed and marked as not part of the air force. Where a squadron’s base rests on Wikipedia alone, the entry says so.

Sorular ve Cevaplar

Everything people ask about the Brazilian Air Force

What is the Brazilian Air Force called in Portuguese?
Força Aérea Brasileira, abbreviated FAB. The service was created on 20 January 1941 under the new Ministry of Aeronautics, first as the National Air Forces (Forças Aéreas Nacionais), and took the present name on 22 May 1941 according to Portuguese Wikipedia. Since 1999 it has been commanded through the Comando da Aeronáutica within the Ministry of Defence.
Which fighter jets does the Brazilian Air Force fly?
O Saab Gripen E/F, designated F-39, and the Embraer-modernised Northrop F-5EM/FM. Twelve of 36 Gripens had been delivered by September 2026, and the Gripen took over Brasília’s air defence alert at Anápolis on 24 February 2026. The F-5s, first bought in 1975, are to run down to 14 aircraft by 2029.
How many Gripens has Brazil ordered and how many have been delivered?
Brazil signed for 36 (28 single-seat F-39E and 8 two-seat F-39F) on 24 October 2014. The 2027 budget bill counts 12 delivered, with four more due in 2027; budget shortages pushed the last delivery to the early 2030s. In July 2026 the air force told Congress a fleet of 66 would be appropriate, but no larger order had been signed in the sources checked.
Are Gripens built in Brazil?
Yes, partly. Saab and Embraer opened a Gripen final assembly line at Gavião Peixoto in São Paulo state on 9 May 2023, and the first Brazil-built F-39E was presented there on 25 March 2026 before President Lula and Commander Damasceno. Brazilian engineers also worked on the two-seat Gripen F, which first flew on 28 August 2026 in Linköping with a Brazilian Air Force lieutenant colonel on board.
What does “Senta a Púa!” mean?
It is the war cry of the 1st Fighter Group, which flew P-47 Thunderbolts in Italy in 1944–45: loosely “hit them hard”. According to the group’s history as told on Wikipedia, it was a slang expression from pilots at Salvador brought into the group by Lieutenant Rui Moreira Lima, and the leader used it to order an attack. It remains the motto of the Jambock squadron at Santa Cruz.
Did Brazil fight in the Second World War?
Yes. Brazil declared war on Germany and Italy on 22 August 1942. A Brazilian Catalina sank U-199 off Rio de Janeiro on 31 July 1943, and the 1st Fighter Group flew 445 missions with P-47s in Italy from November 1944 to May 1945, losing 16 aircraft shot down and five pilots killed in combat. The United States awarded the group its Presidential Unit Citation in 1986.
Did Brazil really pay for jet fighters with cotton?
Yes. In October 1952 Brazil ordered 60 Gloster Meteor F.8s and 10 T.7 trainers from Britain and paid for them with 15,000 tons of raw cotton, according to Wikipedia’s history of the type. They were the air force’s first jet fighters and served with the 1st Fighter Group from 1953.
Can the Brazilian Air Force shoot down drug planes?
The law allows it as a last resort. Decree 5,144 of 16 July 2004 sets four steps for an aircraft suspected of drug trafficking: identification, an order to land, warning shots with tracer, and only then destruction, which must be authorised by the Commander of the Air Force. Super Tucanos have fired warning shots, for example in June 2009; an actual shoot-down was not confirmed in the sources checked.
What is the Smoke Squadron?
The Esquadrilha da Fumaça, officially the Air Demonstration Squadron (EDA), is the FAB’s display team at the Air Force Academy in Pirassununga. It first flew over Copacabana on 14 May 1952 with T-6 Texans, was disbanded in 1977 and re-formed on 8 December 1983, and has flown the A-29 Super Tucano since 2012 after years on the EMB 312 Tucano.
What did the air force do in the 2024 Rio Grande do Sul floods?
From 30 April 2024 it ran Operation Taquari 2 from Canoas, Santa Maria and Florianópolis, flying more than 2,000 hours by 11 June with 26 aircraft, from Caravans and Bandeirantes to KC-390s, KC-30s and helicopters. A KC-390 made the first cargo airdrop of about 10 tonnes in the region, and A-1M jets photographed 13 dams and three bridges at risk.
