Tengah Air Base: what it was built for and what flies there now
Tengah, in the far west of Singapore island, is the oldest of the air force’s fighter bases and the one it is betting its future on. The Royal Air Force opened it in 1939 as a grass landing ground and laid a 1,400-yard concrete runway that was finished only in January 1942, weeks before the Japanese invasion; Wikipedia records that Tengah was the first airfield on the island to fall. After the war it was the RAF’s main fighter and bomber station in the Far East, through the Malayan Emergency and the Indonesian Confrontation, when V-bombers were detached here and, according to British documents declassified in 2000, up to 48 Red Beard nuclear bombs were stored on the base between 1962 and 1970.
The RAF station closed at the end of March 1971 and the airfield passed to the new Singapore Air Defence Command; the SADC’s first jets, 16 Strikemasters of 130 Squadron, had already arrived here in October 1969. Today, according to Wikipedia, Tengah houses three F-16 squadrons, the G550 airborne early warning aircraft of 111 Squadron and a Hermes UAV squadron, and it is where the RSAF holds its big set pieces: the Golden Jubilee parade of 1 September 2018 and the change of Chief of Air Force on 22 March 2024.
The base is growing. In 2017 the government announced that the units at Paya Lebar would move here, taking over land that held some 50,000 graves of Choa Chu Kang Cemetery and about 80 farms; a new runway is to be built on the extension, and Lim Chu Kang Road, once used as a reserve runway in Exercise Torrent, was closed on 8 June 2025. Wikipedia reports that Tengah will house the F-35A and F-35B by the 2030s. Coordinates and elevation are from Wikipedia’s infobox; runway data are left out because the Singapore AIP could not be retrieved.

Opened 1939; 16 Strikemasters arrived in October 1969 to form 130 Squadron.
First airfield to fall in 1942
Tengah stood in the path of the Japanese landings in the west of the island and was the first airfield they captured.
The 1,400-yard concrete runway had been finished only in January 1942.
Nuclear bombs in the jungle
During the Confrontation with Indonesia, British documents declassified in 2000 show Tengah kept a secret store of tactical nuclear weapons.
Up to 48 Red Beard bombs between 1962 and 1970.
The F-16 base
Wikipedia places three of the RSAF’s F-16 squadrons here, as well as the Black Knights display team, which draws its jets from them.
44 F-16s in three squadrons, per Wikipedia; MINDEF does not publish base strengths.
A road as a runway
Exercise Torrent turned neighbouring Lim Chu Kang Road into a runway to show the RSAF could fly from public roads if its bases were hit.
Seven editions from April 1986 to 10–13 November 2016.
The future F-35 base
The base is being enlarged over cemetery and farm land to take the Paya Lebar units and the F-35.
About 50,000 graves and 80 farms acquired under the plan announced in 2017.
הגרסה הארוכה
01The RAF’s airfield in the west, 1939–1942לִקְרוֹא
The Royal Air Force opened Tengah in 1939 with a grass landing ground, part of the build-up of Singapore as Britain’s fortress in the East. Work on a 1,400-yard concrete runway began in 1941 and, according to the RAF’s own post-war history of its building programme cited by Wikipedia, was held up by unstable ground with trapped water lenses; it was completed only in January 1942. The station was laid out for two squadrons, with permanent accommodation, sick quarters and an operations block.
Tengah was among the targets of the first Japanese air raid on Singapore in the early hours of 8 December 1941. Wikipedia quotes the Hudson pilot Terence O’Brien, who arrived in late December 1941, on how quickly the peacetime station decayed, and records that only eight of the twenty aircrew who had flown out with him from Britain survived the campaign. In the Battle of Singapore, which began on 8 February 1942, Tengah, Singapore’s largest airfield at the time, lay in the Western Area defended by Australian troops and within range of Japanese artillery; it was the first airfield the Japanese captured. The last flyable RAF Hurricanes on the island were withdrawn to Sumatra on 9 February.
Under the occupation the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force took over Tengah, while the navy air service held Sembawang and Seletar, splitting the island’s airfields between the two services.
02Confrontation, V-bombers and a secret storeלִקְרוֹא
After 1945 Tengah became the RAF’s main operational station in the Far East. In the Malayan Emergency it housed RAF and Royal Australian Air Force Avro Lincolns and the Bristol Brigands of No. 84 Squadron bombing the Malayan National Liberation Army in the jungle; Hornets, Venoms and Canberras followed, among them No. 75 Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Wikipedia counts 22 RAF squadrons based here at one time or another.
The Indonesian Confrontation of 1963–1966 made it a front-line base. Hunters of 20 Squadron and Javelins of 60 and 64 Squadrons held the air defence of Singapore and the Malayan peninsula, and on 3 September 1964 an Indonesian Air Force C-130 crashed into the Strait of Malacca while trying to evade a Javelin FAW.9 of No. 60 Squadron. As a deterrent to President Sukarno, the RAF detached Victor B.1As of 15 Squadron from August 1963 and Vulcan B.2s of 12, 9 and 35 Squadrons in turn until 1966.
What the public did not know was revealed by British Ministry of Defence documents declassified in 2000 and reported by The Sunday Times: between 1962 and 1970 up to 48 Red Beard tactical nuclear weapons were kept in a secure store at Tengah for possible use by the V-bomber detachments and the Canberras of 45 Squadron under Britain’s SEATO commitments. The Javelins of 60 Squadron flew the last RAF operational sorties from Tengah on 30 April 1968, the day the squadron disbanded.
03From RAF Tengah to the RSAF’s fighter baseלִקְרוֹא
Britain’s decision in 1968 to withdraw from east of Suez gave Singapore three years to build an air force. The Singapore Air Defence Command was formed on 1 September 1968, and in October 1969 its first jets, 16 BAC Strikemasters, arrived at Tengah to form 130 Squadron and train the first fighter pilots. The RAF station closed at the end of March 1971; the airfield became RSAF Tengah and later Tengah Air Base, while British and Commonwealth forces stayed on under the Five Power Defence Arrangements, the RAAF until 1983.
The SADC’s fighter force grew around second-hand British and American aircraft: 46 refurbished Hawker Hunters delivered between 1971 and 1973, then A-4 Skyhawks rebuilt and re-engined in Singapore as the A-4SU. The display team that became the Black Knights was formed in 1973 on Hunters; Wikipedia names Tengah as its home and lists its later Hunter, F-5E, A-4SU and F-16 eras.
Today Tengah is the RSAF’s F-16 base. Wikipedia places 140, 143 and 145 Squadrons here, although its Changi article puts 145 Squadron at Changi; 111 Squadron flies the G550 airborne early warning aircraft that replaced the E-2C in 2012. The fleet has not been free of trouble: on 8 May 2024 an F-16 crashed inside the base on take-off after all four of its pitch rate gyroscopes failed at once, which MINDEF called the first such failure in 35 years of RSAF F-16 operations.
04Growing over the graves: Tengah and the F-35לִקְרוֹא
In 2017 the government announced that everything at Paya Lebar Air Base would move to Tengah and Changi so that Paya Lebar’s land and the height limits around it could be released for a new town. For Tengah that means a much bigger base. Wikipedia, citing The Straits Times and The Business Times, reports that about 50,000 graves in Choa Chu Kang Cemetery and 80 neighbouring farms and agricultural businesses were acquired, the Murai Urban Training Facility was closed, and a new runway is to be built on the extension.
One casualty was a piece of Cold War theatre. From April 1986 the RSAF ran Exercise Torrent, closing Lim Chu Kang Road beside the base and flying fighters off it to show that the air force could still generate sorties if its runways were cratered. The seventh and last edition was held from 10 to 13 November 2016, and the old road was closed for good on 8 June 2025 when a realigned Lim Chu Kang Road opened.
MINDEF has said the future fighter force will be F-35As, F-35Bs and F-15SGs, with the F-16 phased out from the mid-2030s. Wikipedia reports that Tengah will house the F-35As and F-35Bs by the 2030s; MINDEF has not published a basing decision for the type, and the first Singaporean F-35s are training in the United States.

The Indonesian Hercules
At the height of the Confrontation, an Indonesian Air Force Lockheed C-130 Hercules flying towards the Malayan peninsula crashed into the Strait of Malacca while trying to evade a Gloster Javelin FAW.9 of No. 60 Squadron scrambled from Tengah, according to Wikipedia, which cites Ken Conboy’s history of Indonesia’s special forces. The Javelin did not open fire. The number of people on board and killed is not given in the sources reached and is left out here.
The Red Beard store
In December 2000 The Sunday Times reported, from Ministry of Defence documents then declassified, that Britain had secretly kept up to 48 Red Beard tactical nuclear bombs in a high-security weapons store at Tengah between 1962 and 1970. They were intended for the V-bomber detachments sent to deter Indonesia and for the Canberras of 45 Squadron under Britain’s SEATO commitments. The weapons were never used, and their presence was not public at the time.
The last runway on a road
Exercise Torrent closed Lim Chu Kang Road, next to the base, and used it as a runway for RSAF fighters, to show that the air force could generate air power from public roads in the shortest possible time if its bases were attacked. The exercise was first held in April 1986; Wikipedia records the seventh and final edition from 10 to 13 November 2016. The road itself was closed for good on 8 June 2025 for the expansion of Tengah.
The Golden Jubilee parade
Fifty years to the day after the SADC was formed, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong reviewed the RSAF Golden Jubilee Parade at Tengah. MINDEF reported about 1,400 invited guests, including ASEAN air force chiefs, 20 aircraft on static display and 20 in the flypast, and a commemorative mural made from 50,000 photographs. Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen, Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Melvyn Ong and Chief of Air Force Major-General Mervyn Tan attended.
The F-16 that could not be controlled
At 12:35 an RSAF F-16 had a problem on take-off from Tengah. The pilot ejected, was conscious and able to walk, and the aircraft crashed inside the base; no one else was hurt. On 18 May MINDEF reported that the aircraft’s pitch rate gyroscopes had fed erroneous inputs to the flight control computer, leaving the pilot unable to control it. All four had failed at once, a first in the RSAF’s 35 years of F-16 flying, and every F-16 gyroscope was to be checked before flights resumed.
