Kamandi ya Jeshi la Anga · Air Force Command

The Tanzania Air Force Command (Kamandi ya Jeshi la Anga) began in 1965 as a small transport wing, gained Chinese and Soviet fighters in 1973–74, helped defeat Idi Amin’s air force in the Uganda–Tanzania War of 1978–79, and today flies about a dozen J-7G fighters, K-8 trainers and a growing fleet of transports and helicopters, with two C-27Js ordered in 2024.

その物語

The Tanzanian air force story: a transport wing in 1965, Chinese and Soviet fighters and victory over Amin’s air force

1964–1972: an air wing for transport and liaison

Tanzania’s air arm began as a transport service, not a fighting one. The TPDF dates the first steps to 1964, when officers were sent to Israel and West Germany to learn to fly; the sources cited on Wikipedia date the Air Wing (Usafirishaji wa Anga) of the TPDF’s Air Defence Command to 1965. Its stated purpose was to support the ground forces and keep the government connected with distant regions of a large country. Non-alignment shaped what it flew: Tanzania bought from China, Canada and the Soviet Union. The transport squadron started work in 1969, with four Otters and Caribous according to the TPDF. What the wing lacked was teeth. When Idi Amin’s air force bombed Bukoba and Mwanza between 18 and 20 September 1972, killing between 9 and 20 civilians, no Tanzanian air response is recorded.

1973–1978: Chinese and Soviet fighters

That changed quickly. The first 12 Shenyang F-6s, Chinese copies of the MiG-19, arrived in June 1973, and the same year 48 trainees graduated in China and formed the first fighter squadron. Chinese FT-5 or F-5 jets came from 1973 — sources disagree on whether the 22 aircraft were fighters or trainers — and in 1974 the Soviet Union delivered 14 MiG-21MFs and two MiG-21UMs. China also built Ngerengere air base, west of Dar es Salaam, around 1970. By 1978, according to Cooper and Fontanellaz as cited on Wikipedia, the Air Defence Command had about 1,000 people in three brigades: 601 KJ for aircraft, 602 KJ for technical support and 603 KJ for air defence, with MiG-21s at Mwanza and the Chinese jets at Ngerengere.

1978–1979: the war with Uganda

The Uganda–Tanzania War of 1978–79 was the command’s only real war. Ugandan MiGs bombed Bukoba on 18 October 1978 and roamed over Kagera against weak anti-aircraft fire. As the TPDF counter-attacked, Ugandan air attacks on its rocket launchers failed, and by February 1979 the Uganda Army Air Force had lost so heavily that it was effectively finished as a fighting force. Libya intervened for Amin: on 29 March 1979 a single Tu-22 bombed Mwanza and hit a game reserve instead of the fuel depot, and Tanzanian jets struck fuel depots at Kampala, Jinja and Tororo in return. At Entebbe in April most Ugandan aircraft were destroyed or captured. The cost included, according to a 2014 newspaper account cited on Wikipedia, three Tanzanian aircraft hit by their own SA-2 missiles; that account has not been confirmed elsewhere.

1980–2011: from F-7 to J-7G, and a long quiet

Victory did not bring a modern air force. Tanzania ordered ten F-7B fighters and two trainers from China in 1980, took a second batch of F-6Cs and FT-6s in 1982 and bought two F-7Ns from Iran in 1997, but money was short and the jets aged. The F-7 story itself is muddled: one source has F-7As fighting in 1978–79, while the 1980 order date suggests they came after the war. The real renewal came only in 2009, when Tanzania ordered twelve J-7G fighters and two two-seaters; they were operational at Dar es Salaam and Mwanza by 2011, replacing twelve older J-7s. Even so, a MilAvia assessment cited on Wikipedia describes F-5s and F-7s flying only rarely because of airworthiness problems. Accidents, such as an FT-5 in 2010 and a K-8 in 2015, each killed two airmen.

2017–2026: helicopters, the C-27J and a thin fighter force

Since 2017 the money has gone into helicopters and transports rather than fighters. Two Airbus H225s and two H215s were ordered in 2017 according to SIPRI, and on 9 January 2024 Tanzania signed for two Leonardo C-27J Spartans to fly humanitarian, search and rescue and firefighting missions; their delivery had not been confirmed by October 2026. In September 2025 a CN-235 and H215M helicopters flew relief supplies in Zambia during the SADC exercise Blue Lugwasho. The result is a small air force of about 3,000 people, by defenceWeb’s estimate, whose most visible work is airlift and disaster relief. Its fighter force of a dozen J-7s is now fifteen years old, and no successor has been announced. Fleet figures differ between sources and are given as ranges on this page.

That changed quickly. The first 12 Shenyang F-6s, Chinese copies of the MiG-19, arrived in June 1973, and the same year 48 trainees graduated in China and formed the first fighter squadron.Tanzania Air Force Command · verified 2026-10-01

Everything people ask about the Tanzania Air Force Command

Kamandi ya Jeshi la Anga, the name used on the official site of the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (Jeshi la Ulinzi la Wananchi wa Tanzania), which calls it the Air Force Command in English. It began in 1965 as the Air Wing of the TPDF’s Air Defence Command.
J-7, the Chinese development of the MiG-21: twelve J-7Gs and two two-seaters were delivered by 2011, and defenceWeb counted 11 single-seat and 2 two-seat in 2025. Four to six K-8 カラコルム jet trainers can also carry weapons. A MilAvia assessment cited on Wikipedia says the fighters fly only rarely.
Yes. Fourteen MiG-21MF fighters and two MiG-21UM trainers came from the Soviet Union in 1974, and in 1978 they were based at Mwanza. They flew in the war with Uganda, and a captured Ugandan MiG-21MF was added late in that war. They were later replaced by Chinese F-7s; the retirement year was not found.
What did the Tanzanian air force do in the Uganda–Tanzania War?
Where are Tanzania’s military air bases?
The only confirmed order is for two Leonardo C-27J Spartan transports, signed on 9 January 2024, for humanitarian work, search and rescue and firefighting on Mount Kilimanjaro. Whether either had been delivered by October 2026 was not confirmed. No new fighter, K-8 or Y-12 purchase was announced between 2024 and 2026 in the sources checked.
Has the Tanzanian air force had any fatal accidents?
Yes. On 28 June 2010 an FT-5 trainer crashed near Ngerengere on a training sortie, killing the instructor and trainee, and on 1 October 2015 a K-8 trainer crashed into the sea, killing both pilots. Both are reported on Wikipedia from Tanzanian press sources.
Did the Tanzanian air force fly in the 2008 Comoros operation?
No Tanzanian air role is recorded. Tanzania sent about 500 troops to the African Union operation on Anjouan in March 2008, but the French military flew about 300 of them and 30 tonnes of freight to Grande Comore.
