Chilské námořní letectvo
Chilean Naval Aviation (Aviación Naval de Chile), the air arm of the Chilean Navy, flew its first seaplane at Talcahuano in 1919, was created by decree in 1923, was absorbed into the new air force in 1930 and rebuilt from 1953–1954 around helicopters and patrol aircraft — and in 2026 it flies P-3 Orions, C295 Persuaders, Cougar and Dauphin helicopters from its main base at Concón while it waits for four second-hand Canadian CP-140M Auroras.
The Chilean Naval Aviation story: compensation seaplanes, a 24-year gap and Orions to Antarctica
1916–1930: compensation seaplanes and a short first life
Chilean naval flying began with a death and a debt. Naval officers joined the first naval aviator course at the army’s school at El Bosque on 27 April 1916, and on 18 October 1916 Lieutenant Pedro Luco Christie was killed during his final qualification tests, according to Spanish Wikipedia. The aircraft came from Britain as compensation for warships built for Chile that it had taken over in the First World War, the battleships Almirante Latorre and Almirante Cochrane and four destroyers: six Short 184 and two Sopwith Baby seaplanes, two Avro 504s and a Felixstowe F.2A flying boat. A Sopwith Baby made the first naval flight in Talcahuano harbour on 3 July 1919. A first permanent station opened at Las Torpederas in Valparaíso in 1921, and on 16 March 1923 a supreme decree signed by President Arturo Alessandri formally created the naval air service, the date Infodefensa gives as its foundation.
1930–1954: merged into the air force, then reborn at El Belloto
That first life lasted seven years. On 21 March 1930 Supreme Decree 1,167 merged naval and army aviation into the independent air force that became the Fuerza Aérea de Chile, and the Navy handed over its Quintero base, as the Navy’s historians record. For more than two decades the fleet had no aircraft of its own. In 1953 the government authorised the Navy to buy helicopters and transport aircraft; Spanish Wikipedia dates the present command to 4 July 1953. The first Beechcraft D18S arrived at El Belloto, near Quilpué, on 21 October 1954, when the first naval air squadron was formed under Captain Calixto Pereira Ramírez, and the first helicopter was assembled there on 15 November 1954. Bell 47s, Sikorsky SH-34Js, C-47s and T-34 Mentors followed, and El Belloto became a formal naval air base on 5 September 1961.
1970–1991: Brazilian patrol aircraft, French helicopters and the Beagle crisis
The 1970s turned a utility arm into a maritime force. Four Bell UH-57B JetRangers arrived in 1970, three EMB-110 Bandeirantes in 1975 and four CASA 212s in 1978. Chile ordered six Embraer EMB-111 patrol aircraft in 1976 and ten Alouette III helicopters in June 1977; the first three EMB-111s arrived in December 1978, the month in which Argentina prepared and then called off Operation Soberanía against the islands south of the Beagle Channel. Infodefensa records that naval aircraft supported operations during that crisis; no air combat took place. Ten Pilatus PC-7s, chosen in September 1979, arrived between May 1980 and March 1981 for the Naval Aviation School, founded at El Belloto on 17 April 1979. Six AS332F1 Cougar helicopters, armed for anti-ship and anti-submarine work, began to replace the Alouettes from 1991.
1987–2010: Concón, the Orion and the C295
The Navy then built a new base on the high ground of Torquemada above Concón, whose runway was inaugurated on 19 December 1987; the farewell ceremony at El Belloto was held on 13 September 1991. From March 1993 the Navy received eight Lockheed Orions, numbered 401 to 408 — two P-3A anti-submarine aircraft and six UP-3A transports according to Infodefensa — which gave squadron VP-1 its long-range patrol aircraft. Four second-hand AS365 Dauphins arrived in 2005–2006 and four more, formerly of the Irish Air Corps, in 2008 for 18.7 million euros. The first of three Airbus C295 Persuaders landed in Chile on 24 April 2010.
2010–2026: Antarctica, new helicopters and the Aurora
The last fifteen years were about keeping old airframes useful. IMP Aerospace in Canada extended the life of two P-3ACH Orions between 2017 and 2021 under Project Albatros IV; the C295s went to Seville for their eight-year inspection, and the PC-7s received digital cockpits in 2019. Seven Vulcanair P68 Observer 2s replaced the O-2A Skymaster in squadron VC-1 from 2016, and five Airbus H125 helicopters were ordered in September 2019, four of which had arrived by November 2022. A Dauphin flew in Antarctica for the first time in the 2022/2023 season, and in December 2024 a VP-1 Orion landed at Glaciar Unión, at 80 degrees south, the first naval military aircraft to do so, according to the Navy. On 25 September 2026 Infodefensa reported that Chile would take four second-hand CP-140M Auroras from Canada from 2027, the first two to Concón.
Co to je a co to není
This is a small, workmanlike service with no fighters and no carrier, and its aircraft spend more hours on search and rescue, fisheries patrol and Antarctic logistics than on anti-submarine war. Its strength is reach: a handful of long-range patrol aircraft and ship-borne helicopters covering one of the longest maritime zones of any navy. Its weakness is age and thin numbers. The Orion is a design that first flew in 1961, the Navy does not publish how many are still airworthy, the EMB-111s from 1978 still appear on its official list, and the Aurora deal shows a choice of second-hand aircraft rather than new ones. No personnel figure or budget for naval aviation was found on an official page.

How the Chilean Naval Aviation is organised
The air arm of the Chilean Navy, with five squadrons at Concón and naval air groups along the coast. It has no fighters: its front line is squadron VP-1’s P-3ACH Orions and C295 Persuaders and squadron HA-1’s Cougar helicopters, armed for anti-ship and anti-submarine work. Training is on Pilatus PC-7s, and general-purpose helicopters of squadron HU-1 sail on the Navy’s ships.

Squadron HA-1
Attack helicopter squadron with five AS332F1 Cougars for anti-ship and anti-submarine work and two AS332L Super Pumas, according to Infodefensa in 2023.
Squadron HU-1
General-purpose helicopter squadron with AS365 Dauphins (nine bought; five in service according to Spanish Wikipedia), Airbus H125s and Bo 105s; its helicopters sail on the Navy’s ships, as an HH-65 did for UNITAS in Peru in September 2026.
Naval air groups
Spanish Wikipedia lists naval air groups at Iquique, Talcahuano, Puerto Montt and Punta Arenas, all on civil or air force airfields; the Southern Naval Air Group at Punta Arenas flew the first Antarctic Dauphin deployment in 2022/2023.
