Arjantin Hava Kuvvetleri
The Argentine Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Argentina) dates its origin to the Military Aviation School founded at El Palomar on 10 August 1912, became an independent service on 4 January 1945, flew Latin America’s first jet fighters, built the Marambio air bridge to Antarctica, fought the British fleet over the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) in 1982, and after a decade without supersonic fighters is rebuilding around 24 second-hand Danish F-16s, half of which had arrived by 29 September 2026.
The Argentine Air Force story: Latin America’s first jets, the air bridge to Antarctica, the war over the Falklands (Malvinas) and a decade without fighters
1912–1945: from El Palomar to an independent air force
Argentine military flying began with a decree. On 10 August 1912 President Roque Sáenz Peña signed the order creating the Escuela de Aviación Militar at El Palomar, west of Buenos Aires, and the Air Force still counts that day as its beginning. For three decades aviation belonged to the army: a Directorate General of Aeronautics and the Military Aircraft Factory at Córdoba followed in 1927, and an Aeronautics Command in Chief on 11 February 1944. Independence came on 4 January 1945, when a Secretariat of Aeronautics was created and, in the Air Force’s own history, the service was born “como fuerza armada independiente”. The new service was ambitious. Córdoba built the I.Ae. 27 Pulqui I and I.Ae. 33 Pulqui II jet prototypes, which Wikipedia says made Argentina the sixth country to develop jet-fighter technology on its own, though neither entered series production.
1947–1963: the first jets in Latin America, and bombs on the capital
In May 1947 Argentina ordered 100 Gloster Meteor F.4s, 50 ex-RAF and 50 new, which Wikipedia calls the first jet fighters in Latin America; 30 Avro Lincolns and 15 second-hand Lancasters followed. They were soon turned inward. On 16 June 1955, in a failed attempt to kill President Juan Perón, 30 Naval Aviation aircraft and rebel Air Force Meteors from Morón bombed and strafed the Plaza de Mayo. A police report of 22 June 1955 counted 136 dead; the Archivo Nacional de la Memoria counted 308 in 2010, plus an uncertain number never identified, and about 800 wounded. Loyal Meteors also flew, and Lieutenant Ernesto Adradas shot down a rebel naval AT-6, which the Spanish Wikipedia calls the Air Force’s first aerial victory. Perón fell in the September coup that year. In April 1963 loyal F-86s, Meteors and MS.760s struck a naval revolt.
1952–1973: the air bridge to Antarctica
The Air Force’s most lasting mission began in 1952, when an Avro Lincoln under Vice-Commodore Gustavo A. Marambio flew to Antarctica; Wikipedia adds that C-47s began supply flights the same year. On 3 November 1965, by the Air Force’s account, an Argentine crew flew across the continent to the US base at McMurdo, and in October 1973 Operation Transantar made what Wikipedia calls the first trans-Antarctic flight linking three continents. The enduring achievement is Marambio. Air Force crews levelled a strip on Marambio (Seymour) Island between 30 August and 25 September 1969; on 29 October a Fokker F27 landed on wheels, and the base took the name of the first Antarctic air commander. By April 1970 the runway was 1,200 by 40 metres, and C-130s have flown in since 11 April 1970. In March 2024 a Saab 340 landed there for the first time, and in September 2026 it was still flying the route.
1975–1985: the dictatorship, as the courts recorded it
In late 1975, under Operativo Independencia, Pucarás flew strikes from Córdoba against the ERP guerrillas in Tucumán. On 24 March 1976 the Air Force joined the Army and Navy in seizing power, and its commanders sat in the ruling junta until 1983. The courts later judged them. In the Trial of the Juntas the federal appeals court sentenced Brigadier General Orlando Ramón Agosti to four and a half years on 9 December 1985 and acquitted his successors Omar Graffigna and Basilio Lami Dozo. CONADEP had documented 8,960 forced disappearances. Carlos Menem’s pardons of 1989–1990 were later annulled. The death flights have been attributed by the courts to the Navy, notably in the ESMA verdict of 29 November 2017, and to Army aviation; the sources checked record no such verdict against the Air Force. Spanish Wikipedia records that the Mansión Seré detention centre near Morón operated under Air Force jurisdiction in 1977–1978.
1982: the air war over the Falklands (Malvinas)
On 2 April 1982 Argentina landed on the islands Britain calls the Falkland Islands and Argentina the Islas Malvinas; the UN Security Council’s Resolution 502 of 3 April used “Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)” and demanded withdrawal. The Air Force’s war ran from 1 May to 14 June. Flying from Río Gallegos, San Julián, Comodoro Rivadavia, Río Grande and the island airstrips, at the edge of their range and with two KC-130H tankers for all services, its Skyhawks, Daggers, Mirages, Canberras and Pucarás attacked the fleet and the landings. British and Wikipedia accounts credit Air Force A-4s with sinking HMS Coventry, bombs that later destroyed HMS Antelope, and the 8 June attack on Sir Galahad, where 48 died; Daggers and Navy A-4Qs shared in sinking HMS Ardent. The Air Force says 55 of its men were killed. A British operational research report declassified in 2013, as Wikipedia summarises it, judged the Argentine air arms unbeaten and still viable at the end.
2015–2026: a decade without fighters, then the F-16
Peace brought decline. The A-4s and Daggers were rebuilt, 36 A-4AR Fightinghawks arrived from 1997, but replacement programmes kept failing: Spanish Mirage F1Ms were dropped in 2014 and the Korean FA-50 chosen in 2019 was cancelled in 2020. On 30 November 2015 the last Mirages and Fingers retired, ending supersonic interception. The A-4ARs were grounded after a fatal crash at Villa Reynolds on 15 July 2024 and formally retired on 14 May 2026. The way out was Danish. On 16 April 2024 Argentina signed for 24 F-16A/B MLUs; Denmark handed over the first six on 6 December 2025, Argentine pilots flew their first solos on 3 July 2026, and the second six reached Río Cuarto on 29 September 2026. The money is the weak point: the National Budget Office put 2025 defence spending at 0.28 per cent of GDP, the lowest in four years, and the Hercules fleet is short of engines and serviceable airframes.

How the Argentine Air Force is organised
One General Staff in Buenos Aires over nine air brigades — I to VII, IX and X — five military air bases and the Military Aviation School at Córdoba. The ex-Danish F-16AM/BM, 12 of 24 in Argentina by 29 September 2026, is the only fighter since the A-4AR was retired on 14 May 2026, and it flies from Río Cuarto until its home at Tandil is ready. Pampa IIIs at Mendoza train the fighter pilots, and the ageing Hercules of the I Air Brigade carry the transport and Antarctic load.
General Staff of the Argentine Air Force
One of the three services of the Argentine Armed Forces, under the Ministry of Defence. Brig. Gen. Gustavo Javier Valverde was appointed Chief of the General Staff by Decree 1044/2024 of 26 November 2024 and sworn in at the Edificio Cóndor; the official chart lists nine air brigades, I to VII, IX and X, and five military air bases.
Grupo 6 de Caza, VI Air Brigade
The F-16AM/BM, 24 bought from Denmark under the contract of 16 April 2024: the first six were handed over on 6 December 2025 and the second six reached Río Cuarto on 29 September 2026. Tandil is the designated home, where the CICMA F-16 maintenance school opened on 11 March 2026; the flying aircraft stay at Río Cuarto until the works there are finished.
Grupo 4 de Caza and the III and X Air Brigades
Escuadrón I of Grupo 4 de Caza runs the combat aviator course on the IA-63 Pampa III, whose first solos of the 2026 course were flown on 11 September, and a permanent section of armed Pampa IIIs has been at Río Gallegos since 2022. The III Air Brigade flies modernised Tucanos in place of the Pucará; the V Air Brigade at Villa Reynolds has had no combat aircraft since the A-4AR was retired on 14 May 2026.
I, II and IX Air Brigades
The I Air Brigade flies the C-130H and KC-130H Hercules, airframes built between 1968 and 1979, with several out of service for structure or engines in 2026; the IX Air Brigade’s Escuadrón VI de Transporte flies the Saab 340 on Patagonian routes, and the II Air Brigade trains transport pilots on the TC-12B Huron and Twin Otter.
Marambio and the Escuadrilla Antártica de Vuelo
The Air Force’s wheeled runway to Antarctica since 29 October 1969, supplied by the Hercules since 11 April 1970 and by the Saab 340 since March 2024; Twin Otters returned on 17 April 2026 after accidents in 2019 and 2021. Bell 212, Bell 412 and Mi-171E helicopters are listed as operating from the joint station.
VII Air Brigade and Escuadrón III Búsqueda y Rescate
The VII Air Brigade flies the Bell 412EP and Bell 407GXi, by Zona Militar’s account in March 2026, on the former Mirage IIIEA base of the VIII Air Brigade; Escuadrón III of the IV Air Brigade flies search and rescue and teaches high-mountain helicopter flying.
Askeri Havacılık Okulu
Founded at El Palomar by decree on 10 August 1912, the date the Air Force counts as its beginning, and now at Córdoba, where it runs the one-year basic military pilot course for Air Force, Army and Navy students on the Tecnam P2002, Grob G 120TP and T-6C+ Texan II.

Where the Argentine Air Force flies from
Siyah pimler aktif tabanlardır. The brigades run from El Palomar, where military flying began in 1912, to Río Gallegos in Patagonia, and the Air Force also flies to Marambio, its wheeled runway in Antarctica since 1969, in the sector Argentina claims; under the Antarctic Treaty claims are held in abeyance. San Julián and Stanley, the airport Argentina held as Base Aérea Militar Malvinas from 2 April to 14 June 1982, are listed for that war only; the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) is disputed between Argentina and the United Kingdom. Entries with no published aerodrome data carry no pin.
