Příběh

Dassault Aviation: the company and the aircraft that made its name

A propeller from a furniture workshop

In 1916 a young engineer named Marcel Bloch was posted to the flight-test reception service at Buc, outside Paris. He thought the propeller on the Caudron G.3 trainer was badly inefficient, so in his spare time he drew a better one and had it made in a furniture workshop in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, owned by Monsieur Minckès, the father of a friend and, as it turned out, his future father-in-law. The army ordered 50 at 150 francs each. In the end some 4,000 Éclair propellers were made in 155 different series, spinning on SPAD VII fighters including Georges Guynemer’s. The company that builds the Rafale began, in other words, in a cabinet-maker’s shop.

Bloch, then nationalised

Bloch and his partner Henry Potez moved on to whole aircraft. Their SEA IV two-seat fighter flew in 1918 and won an order for 1,000 machines; then the Armistice came, the order was cut, and only 115 were built. Bloch left aviation for property for a decade. The creation of a French Air Ministry in 1928 brought him back, and in 1929 he founded the Société des Avions Marcel Bloch, which produced airliners, bombers and the MB.150 family of fighters, roughly 663 of them. In 1936 the Popular Front nationalised the aircraft industry; Bloch’s plants went into SNCASO, and Bloch, compensated, agreed to run it for the Air Minister.

Buchenwald and a brother’s code name

The war nearly ended the story. Bloch was Jewish and in October 1940 refused to work for the occupiers at Bordeaux-Aéronautique; the Vichy government imprisoned him. In 1944 the Germans deported him to Buchenwald, where he was held until the camp was liberated on 11 April 1945. He came home barely able to walk. His brother, General Darius Paul Bloch, had fought in the Resistance as Chardasso, a play on char d’assaut, the French for assault tank. Marcel took the name too, first as Bloch-Dassault and from 1949 simply Dassault, and on 20 January 1947 the firm became Avions Marcel Dassault.

Mystère, Mirage and the Six-Day War

Dassault rebuilt fast. The straight-winged Ouragan flew in 1949, then the swept Mystère, a name Dassault said he took from a much-loved childhood book, Le Docteur Mystère. The delta Mirage III flew on 17 November 1956 and 1,422 were built. In June 1967 Israeli Mirages helped destroy three Arab air forces in six days and made the name famous. The twist: on 3 June 1967, two days before the war began, Charles de Gaulle had embargoed the 50 Mirage 5s Israel had ordered. They were finished and paid for anyway, then handed to the French Air Force. Meanwhile the Mirage IV carried France’s nuclear bombs from 1964.

The business jet that launched FedEx

The civil side has its own surprise. The Mystère 20 business jet first flew from Mérignac on 4 May 1963, Pan Am signed up to sell it in America, and by 1968 its business jets division had ordered 160. A few years later a young entrepreneur called Frederick W. Smith spotted unsold Falcon 20s with unusually strong fuselages. In April 1973 Federal Express began flying parcels out of Memphis with them, and at its peak ran 33 Falcon 20 freighters. Dassault’s one airliner, the Mercure, fared worse: 12 were built, all for Air Inter. The Falcon line, by contrast, has passed 2,700 deliveries in 60 years.

Breguet, CATIA and the state

The state was never far away. In 1967 the government pressed Dassault to buy 66 per cent of Breguet, and in December 1971 the two merged as Avions Marcel Dassault-Breguet Aviation, bringing the Atlantic patrol aircraft and a share of the Jaguar and Alpha Jet. In 1981 the in-house design software CATIA was spun off as Dassault Systèmes, now a giant in its own right. Paris took a stake in 1979, passed it to Aerospatiale in 1998, and it ended up with Airbus, which sold most of it back by 2016. The family’s Groupe Industriel Marcel Dassault still controls about two-thirds; the company took its present name in 1990.

Rafale: from lonely to sold out

The Rafale demonstrator flew on 4 July 1986, but for nearly three decades no foreign air force bought one. Egypt finally broke the drought on 16 February 2015; Qatar, India, Greece, Croatia, Indonesia, the UAE with 80, and Serbia followed. In 2025 Dassault delivered 26 Rafales and 37 Falcons, booked more than 10.9 billion euros of orders and ended the year with a backlog of 220 Rafales and 46.6 billion euros. Combat has not been all glory: after India’s Operation Sindoor in May 2025, Pakistan claimed to have shot down Rafales, India admitted unspecified losses, and Dassault’s chief executive called the Pakistani claim inaccurate.

It was in memory of a much-loved book of my childhood, Le Docteur Mystère, that I called my first supersonic airplane the Mystère.Marcel Dassault · founder, as quoted in Dassault Aviation’s official biography

Everything people ask about Dassault Aviation

Who founded Dassault Aviation?
Marcel Bloch, a French engineer, founded the Société des Avions Marcel Bloch in 1929. After surviving Buchenwald he took the name Dassault, from his brother’s Resistance alias, and the company was renamed in 1947.
Is Dassault Aviation the same company as Dassault Systèmes?
No. Dassault Systèmes was spun off from Dassault Aviation in 1981 to sell the CATIA design software. Both belong to the Dassault family’s Groupe Industriel Marcel Dassault but are separate listed companies.
Who owns Dassault Aviation?
The Dassault family holding company, Groupe Industriel Marcel Dassault, owns about two-thirds. Airbus holds about 10.65 per cent and the rest is publicly traded on Euronext Paris.
Where is the Rafale built?
Parts come from several French plants including Argonay, Martignas, Cergy and Seclin; final assembly, testing and first flights take place at Mérignac near Bordeaux.
How many Falcon business jets has Dassault built?
More than 2,700 Falcons were delivered in the first 60 years of the line, and more than 2,130 were in service in over 90 countries in 2023.
Why is it called the Mirage and the Mystère?
Marcel Dassault said he named the Mystère after a favourite childhood book, Le Docteur Mystère. The Mirage family followed from 1955 onwards.
