Bell: the company and the aircraft that made its name

The man who stayed in Buffalo

In 1935 Consolidated Aircraft packed up its Buffalo factory and headed for the sunshine of San Diego. Its vice president and general manager, Lawrence Bell, did not go with it. Instead, on 10 July 1935, he set up his own company in the empty plant on Elmwood Avenue with 56 employees. It was a stubborn decision from a stubborn man. Bell had learned aviation the hard way: in 1913 his older brother Grover, a stunt pilot, was killed in a crash, and the young mechanic swore he was finished with aeroplanes. Friends talked him back. He rose through the Glenn L. Martin Company to run Consolidated’s shop floor, and now he wanted his own name on the hangar door.

A cannon through the propeller

Bell Aircraft’s first products were fighters, and they were nothing if not original. The twin-engine Airacuda of 1937 was a bomber destroyer so unusual that only 13 were built. The P-39 Airacobra, first flown on 6 April 1938, went further: its engine sat behind the pilot, driving the propeller through a long shaft, so that a 37 mm cannon could fire through the hub. American pilots were lukewarm. The Soviets were not. About 4,773 Airacobras went east under Lend-Lease, and Aleksandr Pokryshkin scored 47 of his 59 victories in one — making him the highest-scoring Allied pilot in an American fighter. Bell built 9,588 in all.

Bullets, bombers and the sound barrier

War turned a 56-person start-up into an industrial giant of 28,000 people. A second plant at Marietta, Georgia, assembled 668 B-29 Superfortresses. In Buffalo, Bell quietly built America’s first jet, the P-59 Airacomet, which lifted off at Muroc on 1 October 1942 and was towed around on the ground with a dummy propeller to fool onlookers. Then came the X-1, shaped like a .50-calibre machine-gun bullet because bullets were known to stay stable beyond the speed of sound. On 14 October 1947, dropped from a B-29, Chuck Yeager took Glamorous Glennis to Mach 1.06. Bell shared the Collier Trophy for it.

The philosopher’s helicopter

The company’s real future, though, had walked in through the door in 1941 carrying model helicopters. Arthur Young, a Paris-born inventor, had spent twelve years tinkering alone; Bell gave him a workshop in Gardenville and a team. His Model 30 made its first free flight on 26 June 1943, and its stabiliser bar became a Bell signature. On 8 March 1946 the Bell 47 received Helicopter Type Certificate H-1 — the first civil helicopter certificate in the world. And then the twist: by October 1947 Young decided his work was done, left aviation, and spent the rest of his life as a philosopher of consciousness.

Huey

In 1951 the helicopter division moved to Texas, breaking ground near Fort Worth on what Bell describes as the world’s first factory built purely for helicopters. Larry Bell died in 1956, the year a turbine-powered prototype, the XH-40, flew there for the first time. The Army called it HU-1, soldiers called it Huey, and the name stuck so firmly that Bell cast it into the pedals. More than 16,000 were built. Some 7,000 served in Vietnam, where the clatter of their rotors became the soundtrack of a war. The AH-1 Cobra, first flown in 1965, turned the Huey’s mechanical heart into a slim, dedicated attack helicopter.

Flying sideways into the future

Textron bought Bell’s aerospace business on 5 July 1960, and the helicopter arm became the heart of it. The JetRanger, a loser in the Army’s observation-helicopter contest, was redesigned into one of the best-selling civil helicopters ever, with about 7,300 built, and won the Army over anyway as the OH-58 Kiowa. In 1982 H. Ross Perot Jr. flew a LongRanger round the world. Meanwhile Bell chased an older dream: the tiltrotor. The XV-15 first flew in 1977 and stole the 1981 Paris Air Show by bowing to the crowd. With Boeing it became the V-22 Osprey — a programme that survived Dick Cheney’s attempts to cancel it and fatal crashes in 2000.

Cheyenne II

The bet paid off on 5 December 2022, when the US Army chose Bell’s V-280 Valor over Sikorsky to replace the Black Hawk, a decision the GAO upheld after a protest. Designated MV-75, the aircraft was named Cheyenne II on 15 April 2026, and six test aircraft are being assembled in Amarillo and Wichita for first deliveries targeted in 2027. Bell, renamed simply Bell in 2018 and more than 35,000 aircraft into its history, finished 2025 with $4.282 billion in revenue and a $7.8 billion backlog. The company that once broke the sound barrier now sells speed of a different kind: twice as fast as the helicopters it made famous.
